Want to buy a Porsche. How do I do that?

Has
Lambo V10, not bad eh?

Absolutely not bad at all.

Wasn't there a V8 version? I'm confident that the one I linked for sale is the V10, (I linked a still brilliant V8) christ having that as a first performance vehicle.

Buy it mags, do yourself a favour. Find a tunnel and floor the thing when it's quiet! :p

Never had a really fast car like R8 or Mags GT3 ... E92 M3 though, got the pulse racing at 8000rpm ;-)

I'm not super well versed, I know a few on here are. But I'd still advise heavily against buying a rear wheel drive super car if you're not used to rear wheel drive. You do not buy a car like that without wanting to have some fun, and the temptation to floor it at times.

is this a serious thread? :D

Yeah, it is, unusually. I might have the wrong car choice (likely) and am looking for something a tier or two down perhaps. As I said, circumstance is giving options and I know what I think I want but that's maybe not the right outcome.

e: typo.

Can’t go wrong with the standard 992 Carrera but it depends what your budget is and what you want, it’s difficult to comment as you initially said “I want a GT3 RS” which is insane :D

I’m looking at a GT3 touring or maybe a Turbo-S for maybe late next year, but they’re totally different cars, and I’m totally in two minds.

My friend has the current GT3, honestly it’s just a nightmare to go anywhere in on normal roads.

I think this is more in Mags lane ;)

More seriously though, i'd look at a new MX-5 or another Jap coupe of some kind... Porshes are very expensive for what they are, handle like ***** and they handle like *****.

Did I mention they handle like *****?

S2000?

don't mind if I do.

Thanks for the feedback. Without getting into too much repetition, this is a probable once in a lifetime type thing where we can go big and fancy. I'd like a Porsche and I might be wrong on that idea but the idea is appealing. It's not about motoring pedigree or race days or any of the things which actually matter; it's a chance to buy, if we choose, a really nice car but we're one and done. Something bonkers when needed (rarely) but also really pleasant for normal day to day stuff (almost always).

I'm aware this isn't the clearest shopping list, hence the request for advice.

Oh christ, I didn't realise you were in NZ...

You'd be lucky to find a decent petrol powered lawn mower, never mind a car... have you considered importing one rather than buying localy?

Yep! I went looking to replace our 2009 Audi S4 6spd manual and there is nothing, everything is auto and way more expensive relatively. Covid did a number on our used car market, massively inflating prices to the point that little Aqua's go for huge amounts despite being old and crap. Mags should also consider the Auckland Road network as its shocking and bumpy and not well suited to hard sprung cars... my old BMW 550i was ok but the Audi is harsh and I can't image the Porsche being any better.

Find and call your local dealer. Arrange a time where you can try out a couple of options. If they have one in the network, they can arrange for it to be brought to the dealer in question if you’re lucky.
Though as said, I doubt there’s a GT3RS available for this.

Aren't Lotus generally well tuned for crap roads in the UK? Probably not as expensive as Mags could have, but still pretty special

Could you list your actual priorities? "nice" is somewhat relative, and although we seem to have ascertained that your initial pick might be a little out there, we still aren't really clear on what makes you think you want that. From your initial idea and the budget I think it's safe to presume that completely over the top, an outrageously expensive statement of wealth, and special/rare are up there?

Have you ever driven a flat 6 Cayman S at full chat? Handles like God intended

Find a local Porsche centre and take your online spec to them. In the UK they will laugh at you and try to sell you 15 Cayman’s instead so you have some ‘Porsche History’ then show you the door as they all burst out laughing as you walk away. No idea what the NZ marketplace is like.

You won’t kill yourself any easier in a GT3 than an R8 V10 and i’ve had both …. but want would I know.

Going by your (briefly described) motoring history, buying a high end sports car would probably be a bad idea.

Buy something more n00b friendly. 200-300 HP range is fine, and get some tuition to match. Get some RWD miles and experience under your belt. Then get one of the 400-500+ HP big boy cars. The Cayman S is a fantastic car, as others have mentioned.

There's no point having the capabilities of a GT3/etc. if you have no idea how to utilise it. You'll end up in a bush the moment you stomp the throttle. And stomp it you will.
