How do you deal with cows

But if you are scared of cows then it's the only way.

it isnt stopping me/us yet lets just say it takes the shine off the walk when you see a herd of cows afew fields away!
my favorite walks are coastal so its not a problem sometimes but the other week we did Penzance to St ives and back(across country) ,in one of the fields there was a massive herd but tbh they took no interest ,in another was a big white one with a calf and that did warn us off.
btw we have 2 dogs with us all the time ,maybe this dosnt help

It's still an issue, I ended up blocked in by cows again,.both the entrance to the field and the exit so had to scale a 12fr tree that took me over a very thorny high hedge, I don't honestly think they care I am vegan sometimes (wasn't when I started this thread)

as title i find cows very scarey, you walk miles and miles on these footpaths enjoying the walk then the next field is full of menacing cows ,its udderly terrifying imho . are you supposed to run towards them waving your arms or just keep as far away as possible ,honestly this is a serious question as its spoiling my walks
Try walking thru a field full of them with a large dog thats also black and white

Pretty certain they thought I was stealing a baby cos and the entire "flock(?)" headed towards us :/

You're likely over-reacting. If they're not animated when you're near them, they likely won't move much and you cannjist walk by. As with horses, just cont walk closely behind them and on general jist give space. If they're at a gate or style they'll move if you go near them.

Just be calm, slow movements and stand your ground. If you run about yoing cows might chase you. If you have a dofneith you they're very curious and the no running around is even more important. Your dog also needs to be calm and controlled on a lead. If it kicks off, let it go and sort itself out while you get safely away.

I've grown up around farms, farmers and run/walk through fields of turned out livestock weekly and never have any issues. Only when with someone who panics around them has it ever felt uneasy actually.

My childhood postman did get trampled though. He ran through a field of bullocks behind our house and they flattened him giving chase. They're about as lovely as cows get.

When I worked on a farm in the seventies I was told the answer. Push your thumb up its nostril followed by your index finger in the adjacent nostril. Then squeeze. This will have the effect of controlling the animal which will walk in whichever direction you choose.

I have never done this but the long term farm hand that I worked with did demonstrate it to me. After this length of time I cannot remember whether it works with all cattle or whether heifers and bulls are different.

It is a similar principle to why bulls have rings through their nose. And some young people.

EDIT Led by the nose.

Last time I encounter cows I was on my mountain bike.
They were long horns.

I kept my distance but kept my eye on them for a bit.

Its more if there's a herd it's an issue in a small space

My mate is a cattle farmer but he still ended up in ICU for 3 weeks.
You ought to watch these Air Ambulance TV series, plenty go to farmers crushed by cows or attacked.
