Have to say I’m tempted to pickup the 256gb at that price but couple of things are niggling at me.

One being is a steam deck worth picking up in 2025 as I know it’s not the best spec against some of the others, especially for big titles, but it’s also a hell of a lot cheaper. The other thing is the OLED version worth the extra £200 or so above the normal one?

I would still pick one up in 2025 especially at that price. There are literally 1000s of games on steam + emulation and others which play flawlessly on it. However if you want to play latest AAA games then it doesnt matter what games it does play if it doesnt play the game you want. So I would have think about what you want to play and see if the performance on it is acceptable to you.
You could also likely make most of your money back if you sold it in a few months at the sale price.

Yes, it's worth it I think. If you don't find you use it much you can always sell or upgrade if there's something that suits you better. You're not going to know what you like and don't without dipping your toes in and like you say the price is much lower than competitors or the other deck models.

It's precisely the right place to start!

Bear in mind that even modern AAA games tend to have some sort of potato mode. You can play pretty much everything if you temper your expectations.

Can you play Indiana Jones on High settings with raytracing on the Deck? Absolutely not.

Is Indiana Jones playable on the steam deck? Absolutely.
 
I know it’s not going to run AAA games full whack (what main rig is for ;)), more that they could be played to some extent. But tbf I’ve got plenty in my Steam back log to play through that would run on the deck and there’s a ton of indie that would like to play. Not looking for it for massive gaming sessions, more to keep me entertained on flights, when kid is asleep etc.

I know there’s always the thing of next steam deck might be right around the corner, but like has been said, at that price it’s a great jumping off point to start with handheld pc gaming.

Hmm think my bank balance is going to be to be a bit lighter tomorrow. :D

As a parent with little gaming time. The deck was a game changer for me. Settings up sunshine/moonlight is very easy and allows you to play all your AAA games from your main rig. Assuming you have a decent wifi.
I often play some couch Space Marine 2 on the deck.

I bought mine with the intention of playing indie games, but truthfully my PC very rarely gets used now except for productivity and GPU/AI stuff. The deck's ability to seamlessly suspend and resume is (pun intended) a gamechanger.

Definitely echo this.

Like many older gits, I mostly play older games :D Or simpler games, and these all run perfectly on the deck (currently playing Final Fantasy Tactics remake). However, when it needs extra ooomph for those AAA titles that it just can't handle, I stream via moonlight / sunshine.

But bear in mind it'll happily plod through games like RDR2 etc, it'll even run Cyberpunk OK with some sacrifices.

I'm definitely in the quality hardware & software > raw power camp since getting a deck, it just suits how I want, or can, game these days.

This is a very under estimated feature I think. Partly because people are so used to it from consoles now but to have PC games be able to do it, just hit power on gta5 and come back a week later to exact spot no loading is incredible as removes so many barriers to having a quick 10min game when you dont have to think about loading up/cut scenes etc.

Exactly. It's the convenience factor, whether you're at home or not, which makes it so great.
 
Yeah, it's so convenient being able to suspend a game and come back to it later. I bought a Steam Deck when they first came out but never really got on with it as it just felt like a worse alternative to my gaming PC. Fast forward a couple of years I'm now running a Legion Go S with SteamOS. I'm now using it exclusively for indie titles which suit the smaller screen and controls better. While it can get away as a desktop replacement at a pinch I think it shines at being a device you can pick up for short gaming sessions.
 
I'm not much of a gamer nowadays but have been tempted by the Steam deck a few times to get back into it a bit. Is the 256gb LCD version worth considering at its current price in 2025?

I doubt I will be using AAA titles on it. Most likely will be driving games or third person isometric style games.

i love my steamdeck, and you get a lot of bang for your buck on the lcd models. i must admit however i do really wish i had an OLED one as comparing to my lads OLED switch it is night and day different

if you are sure you are happy with an LCD screen however then am sure you will be fine. i bought mine for small short term games as well.... and yet now have helldivers 2, arc raiders and elite dangerous installed on it :D

(its not the best way to play them but for milk runs and a bit of farming it is perfect.... and still have a bunch of indie titles on it too)

Thanks. I would like an OLED but honestly I don't want to spend £480 on something I'm not sure I would use (the flip side is if I love it then I would have been happy to spend the money). £280 is affordable to take a chance. I guess I can always sell it on and upgrade later if I do love it.
 
I ended up buying the LCD. That £200 I saved by not going OLED will now go towards the Switch 2.

While OLED does look amazing compared to LCD, it's not worth an extra £200.
