What have you done to your car today?

I worked on my s box today, recently had a shredded aux belt, looks like the AC Compressor pulley/clutch left the chat...

Been away for 8 days while we had a cold snap, came home to both soft tops misted up and generally dripping inside. Toweled them out and got them airing for a bit before sun down. Also picked all the dry leaves out of the nooks and crannies now the tree has finished its shed!

Booked it in to have some new rear discs and pads and sensor fitted next tuesday at a local indie, going for the brembo's

then i need to get it booked in to BMW for the oil, oil filter and air filter service.

Ill most certainly be plugging in carly to get her thoughts,

need to get the jetwash out too as i had hit some sections of muddy road and its caked the side of my car and archlinings with muddy crap

I think the rear brake service will set me back around £323 parts/labour and VAT

and the BMW oil service / air filter service last time i had this done with BMW was around £260

Ha, I knew that you would be ;) :P
I could never pay someone to do an oil change, let alone an air filter; especially not at that price - but I assume it's because you're wanting to keep the service history up for resale?

Yeh im only taking it to BMW at the moment because its still within the 1 year warrenty, usually, what i would do it buy the oil and filter, usually around a cost of £10 for the oil filter and around £38 - £49 for the 5 litres of oil, and take that to a garage pay them 1 hour labour to change (£45 or £50) so around £95 - 100 maybe? in total

then i would buy the air filter and do that myself

car is still on 51k at the moment, so ill go with another BMW service for now for that. I paid BMW to do the last oil change at around 46k and then the car was oil/filter changed on the sale at 41k

With the idrive system now i assme that most indies will be able to add the info in to the iDrive service history menu ?

I dont really do oil changes myself

Yeah that makes perfect sense then :)

Haha 5 litres? Is it a 4cylinder then? Mine takes just under 7L after the oil filter housing fills up, and costs £100ish for 10L when Opie Oils does an offer, otherwise it's more

Nice mileage!
I'm glad you're changing the oil at the real world mileage, none of this BS 10-20K oil change nonsense, that modern cars seem to spec so they go bang quicker :P

Yeah, you can add it if you've got the OEM service technicians software ;)

Yeh well i think its about 5.2litres these x20ds need.

Ah so you have the bigger engine?

Yeh totally, i always stick to changing around 6k - 8k miles, none of this 20k rubbish, thats when you start seeing issues.

I dont have any software for the idrive system so i would be needing them to sort it.

Do you have software?

That makes sense.

Yup, 6 cylinder petrol everytime I buy a 3/4 series, but I might get a V8 soon.
Yeah definitely! Fair enough.

Mhmm, worked for BMW ;) I have the technican suite :P I can do everything from a Mini to a 24 plate Rolls Royce
That would be your diagnostic idea of heaven @DJMK4 :P

I've been replacing the rear brakes on my wifes Mondeo. The old ones!

And also diagnosed a problem that is causing the left side DLR and rear lights not to work.

Scanned the codes and the BCM reported a short to earth on the left loom.

Unplugged a very corroded DRL, reset the code, and the rear lights work again.

It was a PITA as I had to get the bumper partially off to reach it. Now I need to order a DRL.

That's a Sunday I'm not getting back, but at least it saved probably north of £500 getting ford to do it all.

But can you reset the service light on my E30? :p

E30 is pre this software.
You know full well, that you have to mess around with a paperclip to do that. Depending on if you're pre/facelift ;)
E30's are mostly ODB1, and pre-date even INPA, let alone ISTA D/P
Nice try though ;)

Bit of wire with bared ends does the trick! :D

I think some later models had the ability to store codes and you can use a couple of adapters and talk to it with some software that apes the ancient BMW diagnostic software, but I can't remember what its called.

Supposedly UK market cars don't have that functionality though... My cluster has a space for a check engine light, but it isn't used.

Yep, speaker wire or a paperclip, same difference :D But you knew that already ;)

No idea TBH, and sounds more like the USDM stuff.

UKDM, definitely doesn't. INPA can't even read it. You'll just have to count the flashes, like everyone else on ODB1 ;)

Any light on the dash, can be solved the same as any E2X/3X era - take the bult out :P As we both know, many cars had X as an optional feature, but share the same cluster :P
