What film did you watch last night?

Being There (1979)

Peter Sellers delivers one of his most restrained roles, playing a simple gardener (Chance) who has spent all of his life so far in a house he's never left and his only education is television.

The story itself is thoughtful and well-constructed, using Chance’s simplicity to expose the absurdities of politics, media, and public perception.

However, despite being billed as a satirical comedy, it isn’t particularly funny. It's got more of a Forrest Gump vibe.

Overall, its a well-acted, well-told film that succeeds more as a gentle societal critique than a comedy, solid but not outstanding.

6/10
Enjoyed this when I watched more than a few years back. Due a re-watch I think. Sellers definitely very different in this role compared to his others.

The Breakfast Club (on Now TV)

Five teenagers spend their Saturday in detention, tasked with writing an essay about themselves.

Strange. In the front half it’s quite mundane and repetitive, then later it becomes more relatable and at times intense… which I guess is why it’s so ‘acclaimed’.

One aspect that I didn’t really like:

… the spontaneous romances at the end felt forced and pulled the film’s ’punch’. The film really didn’t need it.

7.5/10 - strikingly odd, perhaps more so than outright ‘good’, but worth a worth.

I've seen this a few times now. A great film.

I love this film. It takes me right back to the 1980's.

Three Days of the Condor (on Now TV)

A man with a ‘secret intelligence’ desk job hides from pursuers after his office is violently raided.

Being from the mid-70s, this was aesthetically and culturally very dated but otherwise a decent ‘spy thriller’. The lead pursuer has a chilling ‘air of death’ about him and a few scenes give a real sense of being trapped / on the run. I can see this being a big inspiration for some modern takes like the Bourne films. The infrequent violence was surprisingly harsh too, giving it a bit of pep.

The main negative is that the romance element was absurd and has aged poorly. Very much ‘a men’s film for men of the era’ and a bit jarring and embarrassing now. But if you can get over that then you can have a good time.

7/10

Zootropolis 2 (2025) - 8/10

A fast paced and fun adventure filled with plenty of action and jokes.

The story works well with its varied cast of characters and settings, but it does get a bit slow at times as it gets bogged down with the emotions of the lead characters.

Vibrantly colorful and with a catchy pop song, it’s easy to enjoy but it does lose some of the magic a second time around.

Days of Thunder (on Paramount+)

A hotshot but inexperienced NASCAR driver and his veteran mechanic navigate their bumpy personal relationship on their journey through competitive racing.

Derivative but fun. When a cocksure Tom Cruise shows up on his motorcycle, he looks effortlessly cool and handsome yet also a little ‘stock’. The film reeks of 80s style and sounds but I was surprised to find out afterward that it actually came out in 1990.

The racing is a good time and there’s the usual ‘injury / recovery’ story we have seen a million times… it’s all fine.

6/10 - nothing groundbreaking but a compelling watch in the typical ‘sports drama’ way.

I Swear - Its a film that you will find yourself laughing out loud one moment then teary eyed the next, i cant imagine how hard it must have been back in the 80s to develop tourette's in your teenage years, it was bad enough just being your average student. The world needs more people like Dottie. A must watch imo

Office Space (1999)

I clip came up on my YouTube Shorts feed and it amused me enough to want to see the film. It's ok, probably doesn't help that I'm 25 years late to the party and it was probably more impactful back then or for someone who's actually worked in that environment, unlike me.

It's sort of a Falling Down for white collar workers without the violence and as mentioned in the actual film, part of the Superman 3 plot.

5/10

Totally disagree, this is a great movie :D

One of my favourite comedies of all time.

The scene where they do a brutal gangland killing of the office printer is just classic :p

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse - 6.5/10.

I really enjoyed the first one and while the visuals in this sequel are very good, it’s like a living migraine. It needs to calm the **** down. It’s so damn frenetic. I must be getting old and tired of the ‘Marvelisms’ too. There doesn’t need to be a quip every other sentence.

Atomic Blonde, cracking spy film based around the fall of the Berlin wall. James McAvoy and Charlize Theron (sigh...) and some brilliant '80's music!
Got the dvd and a regular watch (I watched the wall come down on tv at the time :D )

I can't believe this never got a sequel, very underrated in my opinion.
