All of a sudden my file explorer windows don't remember size and position, I've tried the fixes on Google but none had done the trick, any ideas folks?
Speaking of observed problems, Microsoft notes that the following dependent Shell components and related services may fail and report an on-screen error or silently fail to execute, such as the following:
- Explorer.exe crash
- shelhost.exe crash
- StartMenuExperienceHost issues
- System Settings silently fails to launch
- Application crashes when initializing the XAML views
- Explorer running but no taskbar window.
- other XAML island views fail to initialize.
- ImmersiveShell problems
I had the same on a laptop, random crashes with that error, almost convinced myself it was a failing sodimm. Ran sfc /scannow and dism commands, and it seems to be behaving so far. Really blooming annoying. At first I thought that I might have a hardware memory error. I spent quite a lot of time trying to figurer out SmartMenuExperienceHost, where the Start Menu simply would not work, crashes all of the time. Eventually a fresh install of Windows seems to have sorted it, for now......

Edit - seems random as to what machines are affected, work machine and personal desktop haven't been troubled which is why I went do the whole failing memory rabbit hole with the laptop...
I noted this. If there is a reoccurrence I will apply them, have you applied them for your own issue? If so any success? Now there are some temp fixes that MS have provided, listed in that article I linked.

I have windows update disabled on my laptop as I use it for my Jellyfin server, but it seems I'm still getting some updates, as yesterday I got a message saying update in progress.
I will have a look at that, It seemed to be stopping the updates up until yesterday, I still update but I do it when I'm not using Jellyfin.Only thing I've ever found which nukes updates entirely is Windows Update Blocker, though it doesn't block updates for other MS products which may still get updated. Pretty much everything else is less than comprehensive at blocking.
