*** Microsoft Windows 11 Thoughts & Discussion Thread ***

All of a sudden my file explorer windows don't remember size and position, I've tried the fixes on Google but none had done the trick, any ideas folks?

It isn't just explorer

My Discord is doing it! It's stuck in full screen and I have to alt tab and kill it from the taskbar. I've tried the resize but it forgets and sticks again

I saw a video today complaining about smart app control blocking stuff, and was enraged. Thought it was just me who’d had legit apps blocked by it.
I turned it off as it was blocking several Steam games, and PCSX2. Absolute clown show of an OS.

I hope one day that Moza/Simsonn both have Linux versions of their software, and I’d finally be able to get rid of Windows for good on the gaming rig.

Interesting

Though personally I don't mind the changes as long as it is possible to disable Copilot, doesn't slow it down and the addition of spell checking is useful.

At least I know that it was not just me and my install that was having repeated issues with the Start Menu crashing when trying to access it....

" StartMenuExperienceHost issues"

Speaking of observed problems, Microsoft notes that the following dependent Shell components and related services may fail and report an on-screen error or silently fail to execute, such as the following:

  • Explorer.exe crash
  • shelhost.exe crash
  • StartMenuExperienceHost issues
  • System Settings silently fails to launch
  • Application crashes when initializing the XAML views
  • Explorer running but no taskbar window.
  • other XAML island views fail to initialize.
  • ImmersiveShell problems

as well as some Explorer problems.

At first I thought that I might have a hardware memory error. I spent quite a lot of time trying to figurer out SmartMenuExperienceHost, where the Start Menu simply would not work, crashes all of the time. Eventually a fresh install of Windows seems to have sorted it, for now......

I had the same on a laptop, random crashes with that error, almost convinced myself it was a failing sodimm. Ran sfc /scannow and dism commands, and it seems to be behaving so far. Really blooming annoying.

Edit - seems random as to what machines are affected, work machine and personal desktop haven't been troubled which is why I went down the whole failing memory rabbit hole with the laptop...

At the same time I had an issue with Thunderbird locking up when being started, as it was checking for mail. That is being noted over at Bugzilla, due to the way notifications are working, or not, with Windows 11 25h2. However, at the time I was not aware that would be a noted bug, temp solution to stop system notifications.
Mine is a home based main PC, still having the horrendous SmartMenuExperienceHost crashes. I tried the whole repair thing, doing nothing. Now there are some temp fixes that MS have provided, listed in that article I linked.

Only system I think experiencing it is my Legion Go where sometimes the taskbar will fail to respond for 20 seconds or so occasionally with an error about some dependency not being present at which point it closes and reappears working - but you can still get the start menu to appear by swiping up from the bottom of the touchscreen.

I noted this. If there occurrence I will apply them, have you applied them for your own issue? If so any success?

After many hours of RAM testing, all good, and exploring other possibilities, this took a few days overall, I gave up and formatted the drive with a fresh copy of 25h2. This time all has remained well, so far.

I have only been aware of that article I linked from today so I would not know if those noted fixes are working or not.

I haven't gone as far as a reinstall on the machine which is affected. But if it does have problems again, I'll definitely be applying the fixes you linked to.

Edit - it's the only sole Windows personal machine I have, tempted to bin it (Windows) off completely on it tbh presently.

I have windows update disabled on my laptop as I use it for my Jellyfin server, but it seems I'm still getting some updates, as yesterday I got a message saying update in progress.

Only thing I've ever found which nukes updates entirely is Windows Update Blocker, though it doesn't block updates for other MS products which may still get updated. Pretty much everything else is less than comprehensive at blocking.

I will have a look at that, It seemed to be stopping the updates up until yesterday, I still update but I do it when I'm not using Jellyfin.

Pretty much covers what I have been thinking for some time now. As soon as SteamOS is out I think I will be switching over. Will still duelboot and use windows for a few things, but I honestly starting to have enough of the direction MS is heading. They just need to strip out all the rubbish, make a Windows 11 Gamers Edition or something, charge £99 for it and I would buy that.

Stop with all this AI nonsense rammed down our throats and all the telemetry crap.
