BMW and M Power Owners

No need for oil.

Deciding if this is the last one im going to do at Sytner or not, i may take it to the indies after this one.

I also need to get rid of a 5ltre tub of castrol edge 5w30 thats been sitting around in my cupboard since beginning of this year, i may use this to give to the indie if i take it to them next time.

But what if your oil level sensor develops a fault - which they love to BTW, be it lying telling you it's too low or too full, or simply refusing to give you a reading at all
Don't worry though, they're only £282 from BMW, and you'll have to drain the oil to fit one, costing you 2 oil changes

I have a good ol' fashioned dipstick in mine for backup :)

Some models or variants don’t have them anymore but mine has one.

If you don't scan it, how will you make sure they coded in the correct grade of oil when they replace it?

I know BMW 1 series, 3 series and now 4 series engines, they typically like 5w30 M - *M is kind of a castrol edge thing) - but its LL04 graded)

I think Sytner BMW used shell stuff on the last change.

I know that you do :P
It's weird that they do that for the diesels. It should be one or the other, or just, you know, not give us a sensor that can fail, and just give us a dipstick on all engines

Dont they do the dipsticks on the petrol models ?

to be honest i have not done a check on the oil level through idrive, you have to either drive for 30 minutes then stop and have it on a flat surface to check it. Ill have a check of it one day using that

My 328i didnt have one.

How did you find the accuracy of using the idrive for the levels only ? was it accurate ? no under filling or overfilling ?

Honestly cannot remember. Sorry! Dont think I ever had to do it - was under warranty and service package.

Nope!
Driving around does give a bit of a bias though when checking it, due to it not being stationary.
Your best bet is to wait the 3-5 minutes in the morning on a flat driveway, as when you engage the check oil on the iDrive, it'll bring the revs up or down and hold them, to warm it up quicker and give you the reading :)

IIRC, each 'bar' is 250ML, and you have 4 bars, so that's why it'll tell you to put a litre in when the proper warning comes on ;)

Yeh driving around means that it is just warming up the oil so it gets a better reading. and obviously being on a flat surface also gives for a better reading

I was taxi driver for my daughter and went out last night to pick her up and noticed on the way that there was a weird stripe pattern from my nearside headlight. Didn't think too much of it as I was driving, and thought it had maybe always been there and I hadn't noticed it before. Checked it when I parked up and the entire headlight was full of condensation, and the stripes were caused where the water had run down the inside of the headlight. Booked it in to be replaced this morning. It'll be the 3rd time that headlight has been replaced in 20 months of ownership. A pain in the ass, but at least it's covered under warranty.

Yep, that's a BMW trademark, they've done it from new for many generations, even the glass headlights had the gasket seal fail quickly, and were around £40 a pop each back in the 90's

I'm pretty sure the dipstick was last used on N series engines, anything newer e.g. B series didn't have them anymore.

Only on the diesels.
The six cylinder petrol N52/53/54/55 don't have them.

Questioned sytner why my oil / oil filter and air filter service back in June this year cost £242 inc vat, and the quote they just gave me for next thursday was £272 inc vat

managed to get £10 knocked off, so now £262 inc vat

Still quite high

Wondering if i can get them to top up the adblue at that price included as that needs doing

So, very much first world problems... my cheap sunglasses make my HUD disappear unless I tilt my head 45º :D I assume this is some kind of polarisation issue or something along those lines?
