5080 & 5090 Coil Whine Thread

5090 Suprim Liquid stock running CPPT 3D Adaptive coil whine test - Spinning cat

Was basically silent on Furmark 4K 240

So I'm happy with it,

now I'll undervolt it.

This is just the settings I've gone for, when I don't want to heat my room as much, and fine for almost every game, especially as I'm now depending on MFG in a lot more new titles to hit monitor refresh rate anyway.

Finally have the unicorn GPU I've been after for near 0 whine at 4K 240Hz and 1440p + 500Hz

I just found this thread and wanted to post my RTX 5080 FE coil whine. It's kinda unbearable, I can even hear it when I'm scrolling through a web browser. I'm in contact with Nvidia hoping I can RMA it, I will try undervolting.

Did they accept the RMA?

Mine aren't too bad TBH. FEs, just luck of the draw tho; I've had an horrifically loud 3090FE I had to return.
It does seem FEs have a higher tendency for more severe coil whine, at least based on the early reviews and what I have read. Thankfully mine is very minor. Swapping PSU helped as well (needed to do it anyway as was on an 850w PSU beforehand).

The RTX 6000 PRO is pretty good for that. Although at that price… the ******** had better bloody well make sure it’s perfect lol.

I've RMA'd my 5090FE due to the whine - I'll update on what happens. First, I swapped out the PSU to check it wasn't something other than the card and was going to just live with it, but ultimately it came down to using the card in Unreal Engine Editor which induces a sort of 'stop-start' whine every time the GPU disengaged when you go into a menu then reengaged in the 3D view, just awfully distracting and irritating. I honestly find the pitch and frequency of the whine different depending on the application and Unreal was the worst, but I could even hear it in Google Maps or scrolling a browser sometimes. Also, I had built a kind of showcase SFF PC that I want to keep on my desk, so tucking the thing out of the way for the whine to be more distant wasn't really something I wanted to do.

Unfortunately my 5080 which I thought had no coil whine, does in fact have it. But I only picked it up at 4am in a silent room when running a benchmark. The case pretty much masks it, even with case fans turned down. You can hear it clearly if you put you ear up to the back of the GPU but who does that. So for normal gaming it's inaudible really. I'd love a 5090 but don't want to risk the coil whine which seems very prevalent on these cards.

Hey, guys! This is my Vanguard 5090 - undervolted to 0.900 - 2700mhz and +3000mem.
In this video, the Speedway benchmark is running. It’s not any high-pitch noise, but rather a low-frequency buzzing. When I close the case and the room is completely silent, I can hear it. Is this low coil and acceptable ?

Sounds fine to me. But the only opinion that matters is yours. The fact you're asking a forum shows you're not 100% happy.

For me personally unless I can hear it above gameplay, or 6ft away where I sit then coil whine isn't a problem.

A card that makes no noise at all just doesn't exist and I think it's too easy to just get caught up looking for the holy grail.

Yes, I’ve already had so many RTX 5090 cards and every single one of them buzzes. I use undervolting, and when I’m playing and sound is coming from the speakers, I can’t hear anything at all. But as soon as I go into a menu or there’s a quiet scene in the game, I can hear a buzzing sound from the closed case. It’s not extreme, though. Is that still normal?

Yes it's normal not had 1 5090 that was actually coil whine free (at higher refresh rates at 4K 240Hz for example)

Lower fps targets 144Hz/120hz and it is.

I thought that if I hear a buzzing from the case in silence, I have a bad card. Of course, I don’t hear anything with headphones or speakers, but as I mentioned, in quiet scenes when I don’t have a headset, I can hear it.
But nothing extreme

same as me, it's not ideal, but it's normal imo depending what resolution/fps you're playing at.

I am at 4K, I have a LG C4. My fps are uncapped. Do you think that many of ppl hear buzzing in silent room?

So 4K 144Hz?

still hearing it is normal imo but it should be softer than running it at say 4K 240Hz, maybe try capping it at 150Hz or something just to see if it reduces it or not instead of uncapped.

I’m running above the monitor’s limit, which means I sometimes get 150, 180, or 230 FPS.
