5080 & 5090 Coil Whine Thread

I am at 4K, I have a LG C4. My fps are uncapped. Do you think that many of ppl hear buzzing in silent room?
At uncapped framerates it's pretty normal for cards to make more noise. On a menu you might get 600+fps and I'd expect to hear buzzing.

Noise aside running above your refresh rate won't look great, you'll have tearing etc too. My TV is only 120hz and most games are capped to 116fps with Nvidia reflex, I get some minor coil whine but I need to put my ear right up to the rear of the case to hear anything.

I've had cards (and PS5 consoles) where I'd hear buzzing from 6ft away, that's excessive to me.

What framerates are you getting when you're hearing the buzzing? hundreds? If you cap it to 116 does the noise reduce?

Yep, try limiting it to 144hz (or 141 if g-sync is enabled). It should help. Although if you upgrade to a 4k 240hz monitor in the future it will return. It’s just life with most 5090s.
Yes, I had so many 5090s and all of them had buzzing noise. I have a weak monitor for the 5090 - 144hz isn’t much but it's an oled.
I’m tired of constantly returning and buying another one.

I know I’m repeating myself across threads but: noise cancelling headphones is the best solution. There’s no point gimping your 5090.

I was limiting mine to a pathetic 2100ish hz and my bat ears still found it annoying. With NCHs I’m now boosting it to 3100 no problemo.

And just to set out how silly I had got on this topic, I’ve recently been playing some games without the NCHs… my brain forgot to care. Granted, that’s not on a particularly offensive game.

I have for example 200-250fps in menu and I hear buzzing from PC - or SpeedWay benchmark - 150fps and there is buzzing too but not extreme on both cases. What gpu you got?

I have a 5090 Suprim SOC, it's extremely quiet. There is buzzing but I've never owned a card that doesn't buzz at all and I've owned many graphics cards. I buy a top end card every time the new generation releases. I have to go right up to the case and put my ear to the back to hear anything at all.

I went through lots of 4090's in the search for a quiet one, several Astral 4090's that had grinding fans, founders edition that had excessive coil whine etc.

I'm not saying there aren't bad cards out there, but what happens is some people go through several exchanges looking for the "silent" one that doesn't exist. I saw the same thing with PS5 consoles. "Mine's silent" when they all have some degree of buzzing from the psu.

From the video you posted the noise levels seem good. How does that card compare to other's you've had? If it's better than I'd keep it. What if your next one is massively worse?

So you also hear your buzzing 5090 when playing without a headset? For example, during quiet parts in a game or when you go into the game menu?

Yes, if my GPU is utilised I can hear it during gameplay. So I’m not hearing it on something where it’s not utilised, like Blue Prince.

You can mostly kill this off with an undervolt. However if your brain is currently seeking out this noise, then it’ll be like a sniffer dog on a drug dealer’s luggage. You WILL hear it, even with an extreme undervolt.

I personally only find this very annoying when the whine oscillates with mouse-movement.

Knowing that I can kill it off completely with headphones has allowed me to chill the **** out… but it’s taken me waterblocking a card with low fan noise to get there… and then there’s low noise pump whine that I can hear all the time at idle with my bat ears… so pick your poison :D

Yes, I use undervolting. Do you use undervolting as well? Otherwise, my card is also quiet in terms of temperature, cooling, everything is great. I just hear it in silence, and yes, I’m focused on it.

I had a Gainward 4090, and it also had coil whine to some extent. But it became noticeable when I went from 2K to 4K resolution. Otherwise, do you also hear buzzing during quiet game scenes or when you go into the menu, for example at 180–250 FPS? Do you use undervolting?

I've attached my current undervolt profile. As I said I cap my framerate to 116fps and any noise is inaudible for me during quiet scenes, or if I mute the sound.

I do sit 6ft away from my PC though, but even if I put my ear right up to my case any noise is very minor. I've had coil whine that I could hear from 6ft away and did exchange it.

No, I’m now overclocking the card to 3100hz (and adding some voltage to do so).

It is dead silent with noise cancelling headphones (Apple AirPod Max).

Hey, guys! It can’t be normal , right? At 30% fan speed, with the case open, I can hear a rustling/whirring noise coming from one fan. From 40% speed, the rustling becomes more pronounced, and from 55% it turns into a rattling noise, which is even more noticeable at 70%.

Not normal no. I assume you can't see anything obstructing it inside, ie any wires etc? Does the fan seem loose or anything? If the answer is no to both of those it could be the bearing going, as that generally causes that kind of rattle when it happens, in that scenario you'd be best on RMAing. Sometimes you can sort out fans by relubing or whatever but you'd void your warranty trying it, and it's not guaranteed.

You can add me to the ranks of those who have returned a 5090 FE. It arrived yesterday and the coil whine was comically bad. I could hear it over my loudest case fan profile even when capped to 144 fps along with an undervolt of 2600mhz @ 850mv. I also tried a power limit of 70%. I have a Gigabyte 5080 gaming OC that has a tiny bit of coil wine that I can only hear if I stick my head in the case. I'll try another brand if I can ever find another card at original MSRP. I'm guessing that will not happen :).

Hello, whats up?
Ive recently bought an aorus master 5090 air version. Low coil whine, but the fan noise in performance BIOS can be a little bit loud sometimes. I have to use that because its summer on my country and temps are high
Is it worth it to try the msi suprim? How about the CW and fan noise on that model, in comparison to aorus?
Ive heard that the fans of suprim have a quiet noise profile..but i dont know, i dont find any video showing suprim fans

Its worth it, if it's minimal hassle for you to do so, otherwise just run on quiet bios with a healthy undervolt 99% of games don't need the full juice.
