Avatar 3 - Fire and Ash (2025)

I saw this today, at a Vue ‘Epic’ screen. This was totally worth it, the 3D and sound was incredible. Really blown away… and I was wearing 3D glasses over my normal glasses. Recommended.

As for the film itself, pretty good! Almost excellent in respect of what it set out to achieve, with some snags holding it back. It surpassed my expectations.

In almost all ways, it’s better than its predecessors. Not only impressive spectacle but there is a surprising amount of *gasp* emotional drama and conflict, with *gasp* far more interesting arcs for the leads, plus *gasp* a really decent new supporting villain character. It’s extremely competent IMO and I didn’t find myself bored despite the long runtime. It’s much better paced than the 2nd film.

It’s easier to talk about the snags which I’ll put into spoilers:

The film fades out in the final scenes by doing a retread of the end of the second film. Why why why did they do this battle again… with the same ‘animals come to the rescue’ as per the first film. And there was a volcano!!! Right ****ing there!!! I was expecting the fight to move on to a mountain-side battle but it never came.

The ‘military general’ character is underdeveloped.

The excellent new witch character has an underwhelming exit despite all the build up. Ditto, the main villain just seems to give up at the end

The length is still ‘very long’ which will be a problem for some.

In the context of a series of films, there really is a lot of redundancy between the 2nd and 3rd films.

7/10 from me, which feels a little harsh considering how competent it is at what it sets out to achieve. So you can call that a caveated 7.5.

It’s such a ‘big’ film that it would pretty much need to sustain perfection for a higher score from me, considering it’s going for broad and familiar themes.

Apparently General Soprano is now considered dead, despite telling everyone to abandon ship minutes beforehand she seemingly stayed onboard to get pulled into that flux thing,

Have to agree with the finale battle. just seemed like an extended version of the second movies finale.

Obviously the Colonel will reappear in the next movie, they left that very open with how he fell and you don't see what happens.

Went for superscreen instead of Imax as 3d was included in the cost of my unlimited card, but really struggled with the HFR scenes as it felt like a flickery CGI mess than a smooth action sequence, not sure that projector was capable of 48fps 3d.

Made the mistake of going for a 11pm showing without looking at the run time, it was opening weekend and only 3 of us in the screen. Overall enjoyed it more than I thought I would have but too much overlap with the 2nd, but the 2nd still needed to happen for this one to make sense.

I should give 3D another go! I don't think I've watched a film in 3D since about 2017, so sounds like the experience over my normal glasses could be better for me now.

Do it. But I’d go with a screen that’s advertised as being something new, so it’s going to be free from the stuttering issues that some have mentioned. My showing was flawless.

It did take some time to get used to as your brain has to adjust, but after 30 mins I thought it looked pretty perfect.

Re the stutter people have mentioned, it's most likely that you're just noticing the switch from 48fps to 24fps. Most of the action, underwater and panning shots are at 48 and scenes where there's not as much going on are 24, which can be quite jarring it, I only really noticed it after the flight with Jake, Neytiri and Spider where they land in the jungle. It almost looked like video game stutter but it was just the switch to 24.

+ Less self-indulgent than the 2nd as far as not going off on looking at the ecology for 5-10mins randomly
+ I’m down for goth alien snu snu witch
+ Worth going to a good screen to see per the last two
+ I think I enjoyed it more than the 2nd
- I understood going in that 2 and 3 were essentially one film in two parts but still, too much recycling and it comes off feeling like there was too much for one film but not enough for two without filler
- a tennis ball on a stick would have been a better casting choice than the guy that plays Spider
- not much lore expansion and the only character to develop only did so a bit (looking at you, Colonel) if this was a series maybe I’d be more patient but when you have to wait years in between each episode, maybe treat it like a film series more than a soap-opera?
- the “get away from her you…” was bad enough in the last Alien film, these call-backs are cringe

It’s fine in that entertaining yet highly forgettable Avatar way, but I want to see the big-picture story progress a bit especially given all the world-building and lore that’s been created and is mostly in the background or in associated media (books, comics, games etc).

It wasn't the switch from framerates which was noticeable, the whole section near the start at 48fps was a jittery mess as if every other frame was missing, panning and wings flapping especially bad. Tried each eye and other sets of glasses (yes I'm sad enough I had a dedicated set of 3d glasses when 3d films were more mainstream for better comfort than the plastic cinema ones). Not sure if I could sit through it again in Imax to compare.

Watched it today in 3D in Odeon and the experience was really cool so recommend watching it in 3D if you can. The film was just more of the same but I enjoyed it way more than the 2nd film. Having read some comments I did notice a lot of scenes where the frames dropped a lot too, it was very noticeable.
I haven't seen a 3d film in many years but that was actually an enjoyable experience so will try to watch some more 3d films in the future.

I preferred it in 3D over Superscreen as it simply seemed brighter and clearer.

I think the original Avatar was the first film that blew me away with the 3D, but not much (other than the other two Avatars) has come close since.

The reason for that it is because it is shot in 3D with stereoscopic cameras and the VFX are done in 3D with a render for each eye. Pretty much every other film, especially in the last 15 years is made completely in 2D and then converted to 3D, with a method that essentially separates the foreground and background plus some select objects and that's about it (except big animated films).

This is also why the Avatar costs about twice as much to make.
