Does anyone, or has anyone owned a 848, 1098 or 1198 on here? I had a crush on this bike for over a decade, but don't want a guaranteed financial mistake. :p

Just had a proper read through your post, that's quite the list of adventures, definitely jelly. What's the next adventure?
I keep seeing other riders conquering the TET or whatever and feel like I need to save up time and money to do something similar, but the smaller trips are way more attainable and still have me smiling in my helmet.
As a newbie in the country I have a list as long as my arm of rides I'd like to do; the West coast and North of Scotland and visiting an old mate in Rotterdam are high ups. Nürburgring is a bucket list item, as is San Boldo Pass, Stelvio Pass, all the KTM stuff in Austria...

I need to make a decision on the KTM though. It either needs to be sold on in it's current state for cheap or I need to put a grand into it to get it touring ready again. It needs all the major service stuff, new steering head bearing, new front wheel and I think a new starter motor. It seems to be holding its value or even appreciating at this point so I'm loathed to sell it.

With the state of the roads and very nearly having an off on a pothole at the weekend I'm very seriously considering getting an adventure style bike, something I've never even considered before.

I've been fortunate enough to ride all manner of bikes over the last couple of years and the wide bars, massive wheels and commanding road manners of adventure stuff is excellent.

Plus with stuff like the S1000 XR you can get some proper grunt too.

*off to eBay to look at XRs*

Chopped in my sportsbike for an ADV. Never had one before and couldn't be happier.

Commuting is dream and have a couple of trips planned this year to test it out properly.

I do think that with modern tyre, suspension and rider aids, the gap between superbikes and ADVs means that unless you go for the more extreme on either end of the scale, you need to be pretty committed to really benefit the most from either.

For me, the comfort and practicality of ADV or tourer bikes far outweighs the discomfort, sore wrists, broken arse and numb hands that you get from 100% riding a supersport, whilst you're only really pushing a supersport for a tiny fraction of your rides.

Obviously the answer is both bikes, but I'm not in the position to have that atm :p

Track days, my friend. Track days. They make riding a supersport 100% better than any other choice available.

I think that's big part of it actually. I've never been interested in track days or like a couple of my riding buddies who just want to ride 100 mph everywhere.

A dodgy Welsh mountain pass however, let's go!

Not an ADV but a Honda CBF1000 would also be good for the terrible road conditions currently in UK. They appear to be cheap in the used market. Or a Tiger 800, always liked those.

Right, without starting to sound like that other guy here...
Has anyone considered one of the Chinese ADV's? Things like Voges look pretty decent vfm and seem to get pretty good reviews but is it a risk too far?

They're genuinely becoming good products, but I'd say only in the last 2-3 years. Their performance is genuinely on par with the more mainstream stuff nowadays as they've upped their game in the materials they use. 10 years ago they'd have a 500cc bike that made 20hp because that's all their chocolate cranks and valves could take, but in recent years they've started winning tons of contracts from other, more well known manufacturers and are seriously benefitting from their R&D. CF Moto in particular is stonking value for money and is becoming a very serious threat in the motorcycling world, even competing in Moto2 (albeit with the predetermined hardware).

The thing I love most about the Chinese stuff is that they literally throw everything at their bikes and don't charge more. Heated grips? Sure. Heated seat? Why not. Quickshifter? Go on then. All stuff that the other OEMs would charge you more for, the Chinese just chuck it on for the lols.

My issue with Chinese stuff is their dealer network and parts availability. If I knew for certain that I could get a new cylinder and piston kit for a Chinese bike in 10 years time, it'd rule out a lot of other stuff, but they're yet to prove themselves on that front.

That being said, the Ibex 450 from CFMoto is basically nicking Honda's lunch atm, you get so much more bike for half the price that any of the aforementioned concerns are a lot easier to overlook.

And every journo is absolutely gushing over the Ibex (but not one has mentioned that an Ibex is a breed of mountain goat, for some reason).

Defo worth a look.

For £5700 and a 4 year warranty, that Ibex looks decent value.
Hella slow though, but if that’s not an issue then it’s gotta be worth a punt, and I reckon the residual value will be ok.

I saw that :D

The answer is simple. Age, usage profile. Pocket rockets are tremendous fun, but less so when filtering through traffic in London at 8am five days a week. For that you can't beat the comfort of an adventure bike (or scooter in my case).

That reminds me, I need to phone the repair shop to see if they're making any progress.
