EV general discussion

Hey all,

I received my Hyundai Ioniq 9 on Friday, Caligraphy 6 seater, It's on Sal Sac through work with Zenith,

Happy to answer any questions on it.

Handed back the Tesla Model Y LR I had since March 2023 with 60k miles on it. Glad to be back in a car which has more than just a screen to control everything, and that is coming from a self confessed geek.

Love the Ioniq 9, its a lot more comfortable than the Model Y, handling isn't quite as good, but then its a car you whaft down the road in, not chuck about. You don't get the feeling of speed, like you did in the Tesla, but then the Ioniq 9 is soo quiet inside in comparison. The Model Y had quite a few creaks and rattles thanks to the harsh suspension, but I also had the upgraded 20" alloys on it.

The Ioniq 9 has the 21" alloys, but the tires have a decent amount of sidewall to them. The seats are far more comfortable, and I love the heads up display.

Yes the Tesla was leap years ahead in terms of the software and infotainment, but its great having Android Auto and Apple Car Play again, missed those.

The controls in the Ioniq 9 fall easier to hand, if you get what I mean.

I don't watch my mileage, I don't track my usage, and I am one of those that's happy to cruise at 70-80 on the motorway depending on how the traffic is flowing.

Cruise at 80?

Going with the flow of traffic, maybe 80 is a bit of an exaggeration, but going with the flow of the traffic, not sitting behind a truck at 56 :)

In my experience it saves you a minute or so over a long journey. These days I whack it on 70 and adaptive cruise does the rest.

If i want to change a lane I indicate which lane i want to go and car does that for me too.

Rarely do I need to take control on motorways.

I wonder how far away are we from cars without steering wheels being sold in the UK. 5, 10?

Yeah, that’s very true.

Tesla Autopilot was very good, and the Ioniq 9 is pretty good too. It does wander a bit within the lane, and I tested the lane changing yesterday, which was great.

As for cars without steering wheels, given the nature of UK roads, I feel we’re a long way from that yet. Both the Tesla and the Ioniq 9 struggle on a few bends near me; I simply wouldn’t trust them that far for now. The same goes for roundabouts, can you imagine a Mexican standoff between driverless cars at a mini roundabout?

I personally feel we need a single standard where cars can communicate with each other before we see true driverless vehicles. If all cars communicated, they’d know that car X was turning right here, or turning off soon, so they could go around it or give way to it, if that makes sense. The same applies to driverless trucks: they could tuck in behind one another if they’re going the same way, reducing drag and improving efficiency.

We’re a long way off from that, and can you imagine how long it’ll take for the motor industry to agree on the right standards to adopt?

Well a 3hour Trip you save 18mins 77 vs 70

If all on motorway and constant with no slowdowns which is rare in my experience.

Been a couple of years since I did a trip that long. A long trip for me is an hour on motorway :)

Almost every car I've driven has overread on the speedo by ~10% at 70mph (when compared to sat nav speeds), so it's probably more like 20 mins, since in reality the speed difference is 70 vs 63

18 minutes saved over 3 hours is not worth points and a fine.

The chances of getting points and a fine for doing 77mph in a 70mph limit are negligible, especially if that's an indicated 77mph which in reality is probably closer to 70mph.

Adaptive cruise at 70 all the way on motorways.

75 for me, which is dead on 70 according to the sat nav.

So many judgemental old women on here

Who cares if someone puts their cruise on 80 you ain't the energy efficiency police. Their car, their licence, their electrons, their money. It's a victimless 'crime' don't get up on your high horse about it
That's just poking the bear :D

Who mentioned energy efficiency? 56 behind a lorry is the solution to that…

Unfortunately I ended up buying the car literally the next day after they stopped bundling Enhanced Autopilot as well as the discount on FSD monthly. There was no flex on that, I thought it'd still been included and that went into the premium for buying from tesla direct. Bit of a bummer that, and I'm not willing to pay £99/m for FSD until it's actually ready so I'll probably not see what that's like with this car.
you’ll have hardware 3 (like mine), there is currently quite a large gap between what hardware 3 and 4 can achieve in the states. It’s not clear there will ever be feature equity as hardware 3 just doesn’t have the compute.

There is debate as to whether they will achieve full autonomy on hardware 4 for the same reason.

From my perspective if they can get it to a point where it does its thing but remains hands on, that’s good enough for me.

The standard auto pilot feature we get is about 6 years old so it’s ‘fine’ but it’s not class leading by any stretch and it will occasionally try to do something mad you do need to pay attention.

- not one that bothers me personally but Mrs shroomz likes to leave her phone at home and regularly uses the card key but annoyingly there is only the one touch point at the drivers door, none on the passenger side. We have the car seat on the passenger side at the back so it adds another step to getting in having to go round the drivers side to unlock the car before you can go back to the passenger side to load the baby in.
I don’t think anyone can help with this other than to say the car is intended to be used with the phone key. The physical card is very much a back up. There is a physical key which acts like a normal car wireless key you can buy, it’s about £150.

- issues with IOG, zappi, intelligent charging slots and my HA-predbat controlled home battery (Giv). Through the tesla IOG integration I had the bug that the Zappi wouldn't restart charging after discontinuous slots. Through the Zappi IOG integration predbat doesn't seem to always pick up the ev has continued to charge after a slot and dispatches the battery into the car for a bit. It's not that bad because predbat generally does freeze or charge the battery it's just bits when the Zappi is flicked onto Eco+ and the battery has an export slot half of it gets dumped into the car until predbat picks it up. I'm still investigating exactly which step needs improved, maybe I'll just ban evening exports if the car is plugged in. My charger is wired into my main CU not upstream so can't distinguish the two.
You don’t need to use the charger integration to get Predbat working.

The octopus home assistant integration by bottlecap Dave pulls all the relevant information for charging sessions and Predbat can control the charging of the battery solely from this.

Predbat had no visibility of my charger and my car and it’s been pretty flawless.

Jump over to the home assistant thread if you are having issues.

Edit: I’m also using GivEnergy (now bust if you haven’t seen).

The psychological effect is worth more than the actual time in my experience and no one is getting points for an indicated 77 on the motorway.

Problem with adaptive cruise is that you often end up latching on to a speed yo-yo so your steady 70 mph becomes 70, 69, 68, 67, 70, 65, 63, 68.........

I did Norton Canes Services to Norwich a couple of weeks back and my colleague left his location sharing switched on. I had a look to see how far up the road he was when we hit Thetford and he had pulled a pretty decent gap on me by cruising at an indicated 80 versus 75.

Well I just did it today. 186miles 2h 52mins non stop. No traffic. Car speedo 2mph over GPS.

Knocked 28 mins off Google estimate. Range isn’t an issue with 80 miles left

Well done. Next time do 90mph and save another 18 minutes :D
