Hi.
I'm looking for specific setup.
AMD Ryzen 9800x/9900x/9950x or similar but AM5 one. Minimum 32gb ddr5 cl30/32 fast nvme 1/2tb, min 850w psu gold. Good quiet (preferably water cooling depending on CPU) cooling. All in nice airy case. I need something I can expand in future. My budget is around £1k (can go higher for right set) and I don't mind used. No GPU really needed but I won't complain if it'll come with one. Does anyone selling?

You're gimping your budget with this stipulation, if you've no need for a graphics card you don't need an 850W PSU.

The efficiency rating doesn't really mean much in the grand scheme of things either, you could have an absolutely terrible power supply with a gold rating and a fantastic one with a bronze or silver.

Are you certain Intel might not be better for your usage? While Ryzen is ahead in many respects, Intel is extremely competitive with the 270K which is the same price as the 9700X while performing around on par with the AMD 9950 depending on task.

Regardless, unless you're willing to build yourself you wont be getting what you want for a grand.

Closest that I can get, and I'd still lean toward a 270K over it depending on the software you use:

I like the specs and pairing. Perhaps you're right about the PSU. I was rather thinking about future needs rather than what I'm building now. Also however I'd like to keep the budget as close to 1k, I can push it bit further. If you'd be to propose some changes and upgrades I'd be grateful for recommendations. Perhaps update on SSD or ram, etc.
Also I'm not against the Intel it's just I don't want to buy anything / platform that approaches the end of life, also I wanted something versatile that can handle music production but can be used for gaming too (if needed) If there's a better option in "newish" Intel I'm open to it. And thank you. So far the best option that you proposed

What is the exact software you use for music production? If we knew we'd be able to better gauge whether a switch to Intel would be worth considering.

I bought the Motherboard and Processor off an OCUK member then added this.
 
The ram prices changed quite a bit since then it's a powerful machine. But I'm thinking about the future upgrades. And if I can pull it for couple of hundreds difference it works out cheaper than replacing everything in the future. I've changed it twice already and even my current setup built on old i7 4790 is managing most of my tasks but the support for Windows 10 goes away and I'm tired thinking what caused the glitch , whether it's my pc, windows, old technology. If I'm about to spend money for new, different PC I want to make sure it'll be enough for years to come.
 
What is the exact software you use for music production? If we knew we'd be able to better gauge whether a switch to Intel would be worth considering.
I'm using Ableton, cakewalk Sonar, and pro tools as DAWs than I'm using all sorts of plugins and VSTs, guitar effects chains and whatnot. I do live monitoring so low latency is important (stable good single core performance)

When I load Cakewalk Sonar with about 200 plugins it takes seconds, my last system took a while and I had it from around 2007 (when the I7 was first released).
I also do a lot of AI Splitting and removing background noise and again compared to my last system with a normal I7 with 16gb this flies.
I use a lot of IK Multimedia plugins.

I time this at 10 seconds to load Cakewalk with around 200 plugins.


I was asked the other day to show off my new IK ToneX sounds and how they work in a DAW so did this quick video which is awful quality.

It looks good. It's stronger than the system I put together for my brother also on Intel 12600K and he never complained - he loves it. I just don't trust Intel updates. They tend to make great stuff and keep short support for it. AMD just looks slightly more reliable. And to build the system like yours it'd cost me nearly the same money especially with 64gb ddr5

I never do updates, for at least 3 decades I use the rule of "If it ain't broke don't fix it".
My last system from 2007 never got updated.
 
Then you will understand why longer, reliable support period is important for me... I need to dispose my old i7 despite it still working well. If I go new AM5 I have years of guaranteed support. Won't get it from Intel. Not for the same price
 
For music production you really need a GPU, it's do to with memory latency and shared memory. It does not have to be a powerful GPU, an entry level RTX will suffice.

I've been in one of the best mastering studies in the UK and had this exact conversation, the studio always uses a GPU in the machines.

It doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm going without GPU in music production for years. Ram and CPU is the key. Some plugins and effects (like cab mirroring) are using resources of GPU to build it quicker but it's not a majorly draw resource.

It's not the plug-in's as such, but yes the GPU can help with those.

The issue is shared memory being used for GPU as it effects clock timings and general smoothness of the computer. The studio I've had this conversation always had their machines custom build by a company who specialised in music production computers, and the recommendation was always use a GPU. This recommendation is going back 20 years long before GPU's could process the plug-ins.

Try first with the on-board graphics, however I'm relaying on here what I've had discussions about.

Fully agree with it. I'd just add that currently only the capturing the sound of an amp onto the tonex is the only scenario where I'd really utilise my GPU. I don't think that's critical for my setup and needs. I think integrated GPU of 9900x/9950x will do just fine.
