The England Cricket Thread

Just brilliant fielding from NZ. Two great runouts and a great catch to end it.

As they seem to always do, they have played Test cricket as it should be played. Tight bowling, intelligent batting, and top end fielding. They clearly set fantastic dressing room standards, and are a tight group with no disharmony. As is often the case, we could learn a lot from them.

Yes, they seem like a tight bunch. Contributed to in no small part by Williamson I would imagine.

Disappointing end to the series.

If ever there was an innings to highlight how awful the attitude of this so called test team is that was it. An absolute disgrace of a batting performance. Rotten to the core and that includes the majority of the players.

Talk of Brook being a captain is also crazy, the guy can bat but has no intention of playing to any sort of plan, just wants to boundary every ball and constantly wastes his wicket, he's no test player like that.

Stokes making it all about him as well for that last innings, again no respect for the supporters, that was all preplanned, they had no intention to play for a result other than slog, out and home.

Rebuild the management, rebuild the team, get rid of those players who have that attitude problem even if it means going backwards for awhile. Make a test team again, not a bunch of individuals all doing their own thing with no respect for the type of game test cricket is.

Completely agree with all of this, sadly. I'd be keeping Gay, Smith, Duckett, Root, Archer and probably Tongue.

I'd want to lay down the law to Atkinson, Bethell and Brook, letting them know that they're missing the Pakistan series and that they have a place in the team when they've shown in county cricket that they can play long form matches properly.

Bashir I'm indifferent towards. He's obviously got potential, but is a long way short of what we need. Equally, he's a kid and if he's the best we've got, we should stick with him - certainly never had an attitude problem.

Edit: As for Brook, he's infuriating. He's got all the talent in the world, and should be one of the next round of greats, in the mould of Root, Kohli et al. But he just doesn't seem to care. I hope he follows the path of Steve Smith - about 10 years ago, I was on a postgrad course with a former very senior Worcestershire and England player. He said that when Smith was at Worcestershire, he basically went out and slogged, and just wanted to have a good time, despite all his talent. Clearly Smith properly knuckled down and became the best in the world for a period of time. I'd hope that Brook does something similar.

Amen to that.

So England have had lots of time to ponder next mission which starts to today against India - great scheduling ECB. It is a pity that India do not seem to want to unleash Sooryavanshi even though he is insanely talented. Top scorer in IPL 2026 with 776 at average of 48.50 and strike rate for 237!

After the start of the England innings I thought there was no chance.... but I'll enjoy watching the highlights later.

Yeah but he tried a bit too hard today imo. He's still young, I'm sure he'll bounce back.

He had a few ducks in the IPL and next match dispatched Rabada, Archer or Bumrah 1st ball. He only worries about how to hit next ball for 6.

He beat Chris Gayle's IPL record of 59 sixes in an IPL season with 72. I think he hits a six every 2 and half balls. Luckily he is too young to realise he is doing the impossible. In fact so young he cannot change with rest of team.

International cricket is a different prospect also, different crowds, pitches, weather etc. I'm not sure it will translate fully but let's see! We definitely need more "great"/superstar cricketers, it feels like the sport is lacking them a bit currently.

McCullum sacked as England Men's Test coach. Stays as coach of Men's white ball teams.

Deserved result for him I think. Not sure why Key stays when Stokes and McCullum have gone. Perhaps the ECB decided it was on field crew that deserved to take the flak. Wonder if this means Brook doesn't become Test captain if new coach doesn't agree?
