thinking of trying ryzen for a change

heres an update, finaly pulled the trigger and bought the 9850x3d with a x870 aorus elite x3d ice motherboard. It has ddr5 8000 running fine. now being new to amd I have to ask if I am doing something wrong here as this cpu does not beat my 270k with the same gpu in any gaming benchmark. Any ideas as to what is the issue. tia
Depends on the GPU? Why did you upgrade? what resolution?

The thing is the 270K is not a slow CPU, its all about the CPU bottleneck, if your existing CPU is not bottlenecking the GPU then a faster CPU will make zero difference, yes the 9850X3D is much faster in gaming but what it is not is magic silicon that can make your games run faster regardless of what your GPU has to say about that, if your CPU is not the limiting factor then your GPU is.

So the questions in the first line are genuine, as for what to do with an AMD CPU...... the same thing you do with an Intel CPU, you install it and use it, that's it.

at this stage its not an upgrade. GPU is a 5070ti at 1440p, rdr2 for example I easily got around 180 fps but with this amd cpu I am struggling to get 110/120 hence asking if there is some sort of bios settings I need to use to get this superior cpu performing as all the reviews I have seen say its the fastest cpu around, as of release earlier this year that is. As for why did I upgrade if you look at my sig you see I have 2 pc's, both were on Intel core ultras, just wanted to see what all the hype was about with these x3d processors.
 
Also make sure your Microsoft store apps are up to date especially ones around Xbox / game services.
 
What settings are you running the gaming benchmarks at? Chances are the CPU may not be the bottleneck, especially on higher resulolutions and settings.
 
after watching loads of videos on youtube I saw how to undervolt and overclock the cpu by enabeling pbo and tweaking curve optimizer etc etc and pc is running great at the min, Hell let loose is giving me 180 to 200 plus fps which is a bit better than the 270k so I think I am getting my head round these ryzen chips

If that helped then your thermals are likely the problem. Cooler might not be properly mounted, or not enough airflow through the case.
 
Wildlife is basically benchmarking which CPU can shovel lightweight frames at the GPU the fastest and is not leveraging the 3D v-cache at all. Games have a lot more going on.
I'd run an in-game benchmark at settings that a 5070Ti can easily handle to see what difference the AMD chip is making.
 
I'd nuke the windows and reinstall from scratch, including chipset drivers for x870 and latest BIOS for mobo.

The RAM might be an issue? 8000 must have fairly grim timings? I'd have went for the 6000 speed DDR5, set EXPO and saved it.

Also check the EXPO settings are on in BIOS and not default ram speed.

the point I was making is the 18000 difference in score

You already had good advice. Command rate. T1 Memory. Memory a 6200/6400 tightest timings with a 1-1 ratio.

Even with those non optimal settings a 9850X3D should easily beat an Intel 290 and curb stomp a 270, so I think your issue could be elsewhere.

The "North Bridge Clock" in Aida64 actually refers to your infinity fabric clock, whic in your case is running at 2000MHz, with your memory clock running at 4000MHz. This is largely responsible for your high latency (68.3ns).

Drop your memory to 6400MT/s (could be an EXPO preset if you're lucky) and you should see both your memory clock and "North Bridge" switch to 3200MHz, your latency should come down and you'll see some benchmark improvements, especially in high-throughput tests like Wildlife. Actual game benchmark results might not change very much, although I'd expect them to be ahead of the Intel rig to start with anyway.
 
I think @iamgigglz above is onto something, latency is very important for gaming, and you're running close to 70ns, which is not ideal at all; and on top of that you're running the buses all out of sync which is not great.
Common knowledge would have it that x3D doesn't care about RAM, but that's only partially true, as the CPU still has to access outside the cache. Low latency does still matter on 1% and 0.1% lows, and it also matters to keep the memory controller running 1:1 with memory speed (UCLK=MCLK) to ensure optimal latency.

8000 gives you considerably more bandwidth, but on AM5 that bandwidth increase is often partly or completely offset by the extra latency incurred by running the UCLK (IMC) in 1:2 mode. Basically Gear 2 mode in old vernacular.

Go down to 6000-6400MHz, get the UCLK/MEMCLK running 1:1, and push FCLK as high as remains stable and gives positive impact to latency (typically 2000-2133MHz depending on the silicon) and you should see an improvement in various titles; especially ones that don't care about memory bandwidth, but do about latency; and arguably latency is more important for more games as long as bandwidth is enough.

I'd start at 6000, with UCLK running 1:1 (3000MHz) and FCLK running 2000, especially if the RAM can do it at C26/28 (which it might well do if it hits 8000C36). If you want a bit more memory bandwidth then aim for 3100/3100/2067 or 3200/3200/2133 (Memclk/Uclk/Fclk), but for gaming latency is generally king.

The following ratios typically give the best results:
DDR5-6000 MCLK 3000, UCLK 3000, FCLK ~2000
DDR5-6200 MCLK 3100, UCLK 3100, FCLK ~2067
DDR5-6400 MCLK 3200, UCLK 3200, FCLK ~2067-2133

Mem:Uclk 1:1 is the most important, FCLK is the infinity fabric clock, keeping that in sync gives benefits and speeds up communication, but it can be a very quick way to give yourself stability headaches. Many chips won't do FLCK above ~2067 and it becomes much more luck of the draw and silicon lottery, which is why most aim for 6000 on the memory, lowest latency possible and don't bother with FCLK, as 99% of 9000 CPUs will do that, but moving the infinity fabric up rapidly becomes headache inducing, for a much smaller benefit.

On top of that, as undervolting helped, I'd be checking your cooler mounting, temps, and making sure that your CPU is actually sitting at full speed in games, and isn't throttling invisibly due to heat etc
Your RAM configuration is prioritising bandwidth over latency, which is usually not what Ryzen X3D chips benefit from most in games given they're already fighting latency penalties from the chiplet design, but there's maybe a few things going on here at once.
