Split Air con

Having been absolutely stuffed by the Givenergy app debacle, I'm now completely averse to anything needing Apps. So any of the higher end units just use remotes or do they HAVE to use Apps and Clouds and Smart rubbish?

I think they all come with remotes? I know the Mitsubishi HI ones do.
 
An installer is unlikely to install anything they have not supplied themselves. There are also warranty implications of this, if the hardware stops working, it’s your problem not theirs as they didn’t supply it.

Most installers only offer 1-2 brands of 10+ on the market so it comes down to what they offer, not what we can recommend. Likewise, they are mostly a much of a muchness anyway.

If you want aircon the first step is to get some quotes and go from there. You are best off asking for recommendations for installers but London is pretty big so you might need to be more specific in east/west/north/south.
Still waiting for local installers to get back to me in East London (Considering should I just get a quote for upstairs first, I assume they will recommend two external units for load and reliability) . Avg current temp is around 30 in bedrooms and ground floor is around 32, Kitchen is exception around 34 without any cooking :eek:)

Reviews are shocking for the 'MELCloud Home' app if that is what you mean. I use the MELCloud app which is also shocking but it does work well enough for me, just very clunky. I wish it would let you know how much power you are using for each unit.
They've released an updated MELCloud with a more friendly user interface.
 
I'm not criticising you for getting the discount.

I just don't understand the policy. Even if heat pumps are more efficient than other heating methods, they still increase electricity demand on the grid. If millions more homes install them basically purely for cooling in summer, that's a lot more electricity that has to be generated.

Good for you getting the VAT saving, but I don't see how subsidising more electricity demand helps achieve net zero.


I guess they work in reverse also though so they can heat too? which is the effcient part? but if thats not the primary reason people are installing them it just seems dumb..

no doubt some companies and mps made an absolute fortune from this push though. GG lobbying.
During the summer we have a massive glut of wasted energy during daylight hours, this is due to Solar PV production being much higher than originally planned for. Nuclear generation is constant you cannot turn it off or winding down of production so when PV is high and regular generation is normal we waste large volumes of energy because we cannot store it. (not enough battery systems). (Source My Employer is an energy generator and supplier I have worked in the generation industry for the last 10 years, on both nuclear and renewables)

the average heatpump based cooling system at peak is 1kwh at temp average is around 2-400w same goes for heating, increasing the usage of a property is not detrimental to the 'Grid' it actually reduces brownouts (cause by over voltage at transformer level) and high voltage incidents especially in summer.
 
Just built an extension, ripped down the old conservatory and rebuilt as a home office come gym, does not currently have any heating or cooling, but this heatwave is slowly convincing the wife to listen to me about a mini split system :D finally!
 
Hopefully getting ours installed this week, should find out today as the 10kW outdoor unit is supposed to be delivered to the installers supplier today.

I don't know if I'm more excited by sleeping in perfect temperature with the windows closed or working out in a cooled garage gym.
 
My Aircon wasn't working too well upstairs last week in the searing heat, (ducted loft unit) bedrooms were comfortable enough at 22c or so, but my office was constantly at 25c when working with 2 monitors and a TV on, wondered why and did the usual google and first answer reminded me I hadn't cleaned the filter in a good 18 months or so, so been up this morning and gave it a good clean up and gave the fans a dust off too, know it's cooler today, but temps are back to their normal 21-22. Also took the time to remove the temp offset on the mitsubishi electric controller so it'll carry on ploughing cold in until it gets down to the right temp.
 
Haven’t been particularly uncomfortable in my house, it’s a Victorian terrace so seems pretty good at keeping cool but I’m definitely considering air con if we are going to just have heatwaves like this. My cats haven’t been enjoying it too much!

It's looking unlikely, I don't think the supplier has had the delivery of the 10kW outdoor unit :(

That’s the problem this time of year. When we did the second half of our install many summers ago, it kept getting pushed back and back. It was much easier in the winter.

For me it’s sleep > gaming > gym > everywhere else

I'm going with single splits for 2 bedrooms at 2.5kw each and one 3.5kw for the living room. Much cheaper and no need to go to the fuse box. Only issue are the multiple condensers but they will be going along the side of the house and out of the way, but like everyone else I am waiting for stock!

Had a engineer from wassergroup who did a site visit today and said same 3 separate condensers for each bedroom will be cheaper. He did mention they have Daikin, Fujitsu and Midea avaliable to install with mid tier being Fujitsu
 
I was initially going to have individual split units installed but was persuaded not to. I looked into planning and on a terraced/end terrace house you can only have a single external condenser to fall within permitted development. So I am going with a single unit. I noted that locally a house had an enforcement notice stating that the two fan coil units are removed.
