RAM upgrade options

I said earlier in the thread its 1000 so you aren't getting access any time soon:

"Access to the Members Market forum requires two things. Firstly, you will need to have over 1000 posts and have been signed up for at least 180 days."
Read the rest of the rules: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/help/boardusage/

The memory controller is on the cpu, AM4 doesn't like running 4 sticks of ram at higher speeds because it puts too much stress on the memory controller so when all four slots are populated people often had to run them at lower speeds so the system didn't crash.

The cpu is rated for 2666 but people used XMP/DOCP to run them at 3200 which gives better performance but it depends on the quality of the ram modules (B die were popular) and the memory controller on the CPU; ideally you would use ram thats on your motherboard QVL list so you know its been tested and works well but in the current market or when buying secondhand you won't have as much choice.

If you can find two 8GB 3200 at a good price then you should get that because it gives better performance but if you stick with the much slower 2133 then you should be able to use all 4 slots with the trade off being lower system performance.

so if i got some 3200MHz Ram i would also need the XMP/DOCP ?

Ideally but you should be able to set the speed manually to 3200 in the bios, theres no 100% guarantee that your CPU memory controller will be happy at 3200 only that it's a lot easier to run 2 sticks at higher speeds than trying to run 4 at higher speeds.

so would likely need a BIOS update
You have a very old cpu so double check they didn't drop support for the 1600 before you update the bios some of the motherboard bioses were too small so when they released updates sometimes they dropped support for older stuff...

Ahh, yeah, probably not worth buying cl22 ram for this build.

catch 22 if he buys better ram now he can run it faster if he gets a newer cpu but if he gets 2133 hes stuck with it if he ever upgrades the cpu...

would 3000 be the limit for his 1600?

edit there is some 3200 on QVL list for his pinnacle ridge class cpu but not a lot:

edit there was an earlier summit ridge 1600

Think Id still look for 3200 or 3000 and run it slower if it wasnt happy with the 1600 memory controller

is there such a thing as 2 x 8Gb 2133MHz DDR4 RAM ? i nthink i found some on Amazon, alsao saw this: ''

【DDR4 RAM】GIGASTONE 16GB Kit (2x8GB) DDR4 2666MHz (2400MHz or 2133MHz) PC4-21300 (PC4-19200/17000) CL19 1.2V UDIMM 288 Pin Unbuffered Non ECC High Performance PC Desktop Memory Upgrade

i can't read anymore now, thispage isn't too bad but Amazon is casing too much eye strain. :(

2133 is very old, so new memory is quite rare, but you don't need to buy 2133. You can just buy almost anything and it'll default to 2133 anyway when you add it with your existing sticks.

so i am now edging towardsthe GiGastone 2x8Gb x 2666MHz , seems like i could ditch the old 2133's and have a nice little improvement with no fiddling ?

I would not pay that kind of money for 16GB on this old PC. It isn't worth it.

A used kit should be much cheaper.

In terms of performance: 2666 may offer a mild increase in FPS if you're often CPU-bottlenecked, but if all you do is play one very old game, then it will matter less than the capacity.

You need to delete the link again.

If you are buying new ram you could just get the cheapest kit Overclockers sell and manually set the speed if you can't run it with xmp:

But I thought you were going to try and pick up some second hand stuff to save some money?

if ican find some then yes i might do tht. ia m trying to avoid having to do any settings changes as my eyesight is really bad. i am waiting to get eye surgery. maybe afterwards i could do something else. if the surgety goes well. burget will still be very tight.

I sent you a PM awhile ago with a suggestion and a couple of other people also made suggestions in the thread of where you might be able to source second hand ram on a budget so maybe have a look at those places.

Is there anyone that could help you if you need to change bios settings?

Did you try the laptop again with the battery disconnected?

Good luck with the eye surgery.

Pretty much all used DDR4 will just default to 2133 when you plug it in (alongside what you have), which you're already running, so I wouldn't worry about it. You can always change it later.

i cant se eyour PM. where is it?

t the moment i am a bit stuck for help with this.

ni i haven't tried that. the HDD is also not there. would that prevent it?, i guess not. just wont boot. i will try it when i get cjance.

I've only just started using direct messgaes but they should show if you click on the envelope icon unless your account privacy settings are blocking direct messages from other members. Unless you don't have enough posts to use direct messages but I can't see anything about that in the rules.

Other people have mentioned the same place in the thread, the other message I sent you was the repair place I saw that described your laptop problem; I didn't want to post it in the thread because I didn't want someone to mistake it as a personal recommendation when I've never used them.

Re laptop: the ssd / hdd not being installed won't stop it turning on it will just give an error about not finding the boot device; I'm only suggesting it because if it works without the battery then you could use that until you decide to either sort the 1600 out or get the laptop charging circuit fixed.

maybe i need to ask a more direct question: what RAM options doi have that i can just replace my existing RAM with, no speed adjustments, no BIOS this-that-the other. simply an out & in upgrade.
if i manage to return to work my budget will change and i can then consider other options , but its looking rather unlikel at the moment.

Board: Gigabyte AB350M-Gaming 3-CF
CPU : 3.20 gigahertz AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Six-Core
RAM: 2 x 4Gb cmk8gx4m2a2400c14

If you're comfortable with the speed it is running at, then buy any 2x8GB kit (one caveat: NOT laptop/SODIMM or registered/server RAM). It will almost certainly just default to 2133 like your existing RAM.

If everything works, try adding the 2x4GB back and see what happens.

Only JEDEC RAM would require no adjustments while increasing memory speed, but seeing as many used kits are gaming RAM (which requires XMP/DOCP) I would not restrict your choices for extra speed that you probably don't need.
