Decent game controller?

Hope mine arrives early next week, I'm away for a week after next weekend and want to get some game time in!

The one thing I don't like about GameSir is the home button ring LED, it cannot be turned off and when playing in the dark on an OLED, it's a distraction:

The LEDs can be turned off (or customised) on the G7 Pro 8K.

I got the Steam machine notication a few weeks ago, and it is for the 2TB one...not even with a controller. Hard pass.

Why did you join the list for that model then lol, mine was for the cheapest one with no controller as that was the only one I was likely to ever get.

Just come from the future and people are still discussing it.

Yeah not the 8K version here.
You tempted to grab one now they've released them in 'regular' colours?

On the topic of the 8k, if anyone has one and doesn't want to use the Gamesir software or wants more customisation when it comes to stick curves there's now a web based app (https://gs.evua.cc/#/connect) built by Eyth (https://x.com/Eythavon).

Eyth is one of the main guys behind the Hyperstrike (now Heliumstrike) 8k boards that fit in the PS4 shell. The current Hyperstrike has the lowest stick latency of any controller currently available - but the Hyperstrike software is such a joy to use if you want to go into the finer details of customising a controller or sharing layouts/configs between other users.

It was great to see him build something similar for the G7 Pro 8k (and I think it works with the Tarantula 8k too).

Actually am tempted now because I had a email from Steam this morning saying my controller order has been cancelled and refunded due to an address issue, which is funny because the Steam Frame arrived to the exact same address on my account.... I think they didn't have enough stock and sent out emails willy nilly and had to cancel some peoples orders. I have raised a support request asking wtf so will see what they say but now you gotta go back on the reservation so unless they sort it internally then I have zero desire to wait and order another piece of steam hardware.

Will likely just keep the dual sense edge replica and my current G7 Pro but mod the Pro so the LED is dimmer I think as it is a fantastic controller with amazing sticks otherwise.

It arrived today...

First impressions just setting it up, how it feels in the hand etc are that it very much feels like a first party controller. Like if PC hadn official controller, this would be it. The Dpad feels like something Nintendo would release (one of my fav qualities with Nintendo controllers even since NES).

ABXY buttons feels nice, even though they are membrane, there is tactile feel.

Sticks feels fine, there are no anti-friction rings attached to the top housing cover like on third party controllers, so I do wonder how they will fare as time goes on.

Haptics feel really nice, using the trackpads as scroll/cursor on Windows feels polished.

I'm using the rounded stick cap covers off the G7 Pro which fit fine and I prefer the convex shape vs the convex tops of the base stick caps.

once I have played more games with it I will decide if it is worth sacking off the G7 Pro and keeping in use just steam controller and that third party P5 dual sense edge which should be arriving next week.

Purple G7 pro for £75 seems quite decent spec for the cost. Gross D pad though.
Official dual shock edge was absolute tosh for the price, stick drift and what felt like a 20m battery life for £200 lol. Never returned a pad as quick as that thing.

Stick drift on the DS Edge out of the box? I had my original Edge from the 2023 Jan release for almost 18 months before needing to swap the stick modules out!

Agree that the price of the Edge is a lot. I think it has the best paddles available right now (left paddle + right dome for me!) and swapping the stick modules out is a really nice feature. The profile switching directly on the controller with the Fn buttons is also really well done (although I also like the Gamesir M+direction approach as well) and it's something I miss whenever I use another controller.

I picked up some TMR JS13 Pro modules for my Edge in the summer and that really should mean I never have to get another set of modules!

I was hoping we'd see a proper v2 version at some stage. I'm not bothered by battery life as I use it wired 90% of the time but I think there are plenty of improvements that could be made for a proper feeling 'Edge 2'.

Give us TMR sticks as standard, JS13 Pros aren't insanely expensive any more and they're perfectly linear.

The Scuf Omega has some of the nicest faceclick and dpad buttons available (probably the only good thing on that controller...) and it'd be nice to have that included with the Edge. Better rear grips that don't peel off after 6 months. Move from having a 3 phase trigger design and just have 'regular' full pull and then an instant microswitch / clicky trigger, just like on the G7.

I'd also love extra shoulder buttons, just like how the Void Genesis does it where they're built into the top shell and feel very naturally placed. The G7 shoulders are ok - just a little 'plonked' on there.

Lastly... I'd love it if they made the vibration modules removable in a much more accessible way. I get that they need to include them to ensure their top end PS controller can offer all of the haptics available - but I removed them from my Edge and the weight save is really noticeable. If they made it so we could just remove 1 screw on each side to pop them out (and maybe a quick release cable?) that'd be a nice option to have.

There's been some great improvements in controllers in the last 12/18 months. Custom 8k boards like the Firebird, Hyperstrike & Heliumstrike, SuiOvOi and the Marius Board - and in a variety of forms too (for a PS4 shell, PS5 and Xbox) so there's been such accelerated growth for 'additions' like shoulder buttons/supporting multiple rear buttons. Hopefully the next Edge can take advantage of what's available.

Advanced haptics seems to work in various games on the steam controller which is cool, silent hill townfall has it on raising the gun, then recoil when firing etc.

@t2na No I meant a £200 controller not having TMR etc is ludicrous. Not paying £££ to swap sticks in something that costs that much.

I suspect I’ll be done with controllers when the Steam one arrives, DS5, that weird metal one mrk made me buy covers all bases. Oh and Switch 2 pro controller.

Ah gotcha! In fairness, the Edge was released before TMR/HE sticks were at an acceptable level to match ALPS. I'd say it's only really been this year that we've seen good TMR sticks available with JS13/JT13 etc.

I don't know what that means but you sound like you know your stuff, so I agree with you :D

Hall effect has been around decades remember, Dreamcast had one!

TMR is new relatively speaking but its uptake has been very rapid in that basically every third party premium controller uses them and there's NO reason whatsoever Sony hasn't updated the dual sense line entirely to at least decent hall effect modules considering they're more than happy to make money by fleecing people on special edition dualsense controllers that simply have a skinned housing to match certain games etc.

That abx one I've got coming next week has hall effect and still has Edge spec features as well as a few extras on top yet costs £60, so Sony has no excuse here given dualsense is infamous for stick drift.
