Russell Brand.

Wow.
I know if I was charged with a sex crime and that many victims/witnesses turned up and the CPS gave the go ahead I wouldn't expect anybody to stand by me.
if it was one vs one then maybe.

So your friends would believe you capable of such crimes? He can't find a single person from his 30+ years to stand by him other than his wife?

Edit: I get its a lot of victims but I still think its a stupid thing to say to a jury.

I thought he was absolute besties with David Walliams? That would be bit of a show stopper if he appeared in court to put in a good word for him. Maybe he was unavailable.

Jonathan Ross, Matt Morgan... actually maybe not a great idea.

He certainly wouldn't be asking Bob Geldof or Sean Lock (sadly no longer with us) that is for sure.

Loads of victims & witnesses vs me - I don't expect anybody but perhaps can hope some will sit on the fence until after a verdict.
One vs one maybe.

Mind you saying that I knew somebody who was 100% guilty of paedo pictures.
He was caught during the Operation Ore years and he made 20 payments to a website that featured only child sex.
Also things that had happened 'innocently' over the years I knew he was guilty:
eg He asked me how to completely erase data off a hard drive and I said take it out and smash it with a sledgehammer which he did.
When he was found guilty and put on the Register many of his workmates stood by him even though I tried to explain he'd made payments to a paedo site 20 times.
"But they didn't find pictures on his PC"
"Yes because before it all came to an arrest he obviously knew it was coming and I innocently told him how to wipe a hard drive with a sledgehammer.".

I'm inclined to agree. The inference is that even people who know you well believe that you might have done it.

Over the years two people I have known through work have been convicted.

One I had spent a fair bit of time with and swore throughout that he was innocent and his bitter ex wife had stitched him up by putting kiddie stuff on his computer. I had no idea either way and he had never given me any cause for concern, so I told him I would await the outcome of his trial. Which he claimed would prove his innocence. When it came down to it he pleaded guilty (according to him they offered him a deal for a suspended sentence Vs the risk of actual prison time). Once he was actually convicted I told him not to contact me again.

The other guy was more of an obvious odd ball type and I didn't really know him much beyond attending the same meetings. Then one day instead of being at the meeting he was in the papers charged with repeatedly abusing his underage niece. Which was pretty shocking regardless, but I got the impression his colleagues were not in any rush to defend his reputation. I believe he did go down for at least a few years and I don't think anyone at work ever heard from him again.

So guys what has been the most damming piece of evidence?

Has any third parties come out to corroborate any of the allegations or is it still he said she said?

Its mostly he said they said, but his previous flat mate and personal assistant gave some evidence about his general behaviour and things he said.

Tends to be the case with most rape trials really.

His defence will point out all of the lovely things he's done, the time he's been around pretty girls/women and hasn't raped them etc. The prosecution will do everything they can to paint him to be a complete sleezeball. Ever is the way.

Did taking a deal to avoid the possibility of prison convince you that he was guilty?

Wonder whether these trials should be televised, like Depp, if you could hear the witnesss / his testaments delivery could have a more informed view.
In contrast our recent change for televising judge sentencing seems rather flippant.

The wifes reported comments about non-coercion themselves sound rather game-layed/rehearsed, in that context not sure why the recent trial
where witness used AI was itself castigated.

Moderator’s score: 4/10. Credit where it's due, jpaul. You've discovered capital letters, and the paragraph structure is showing signs of improvement. The spelling, punctuation and sentence construction still need considerable work, but we mustn't discourage progress. Baby steps Keep it up!

Do you know what he did or didn't download and exactly what took place regarding his court appearance? Me neither.

However, there is no doubt about the fact that he pleaded guilty and is a convicted sex offender.

Not a fan of televised trials. You only have to see what happens in the US with the judge and lawyers worrying more about how they come across to the public than doing their jobs.

I went to a sentencing a couple of years ago and it was quite fascinating to listen to. Though it can go on and on.

The Times youtube reported on yesterday and his wife's testimony. The journalist said Brand kept silently saying words at his wife. I'm surprised the judge would allow that tbh

He said she said is evidence.

I’m not sure which third parties you’re hoping to corroborate things, unless you think someone was in the room at the time, which I’m going to hazard is pretty rare in rape cases.

You sound like you’re suggesting that no rape should ever be convicted, as though it’s just “She said he raped her” and “He says he didn’t” and then everyone just goes home because there’s just no way forward from there.

I think the other factor is physical evidence, completion of rape kits, photographs of injury and so on, which is unlikely in these historic cases where victims come forward much later.
