Moving to Vista... need advice

Vista?
Advice?

Sure, dont bother, stick with XP, be happy for the next few months instead of cursing bill gates' name and throwing your PC in the sea.

WTF.

Not really mate. Just becuase you dont like it dosent mean someone else wont like it aswell.

Thats compltely useless advice.

Try Vista. Dual boot along with XP. That way you get the best of both worlds.

Now what is it with some people and their hate towards Microsoft?

Go write something detailed enough for me to explain this hatred to microsoft?

Vista is crap, well i love it, but its crap. Allow me to explain, i work in IT repair. 1 on 1 stuff not corporate. Im basically there to save little old lady X from the evils of the internet and to try and make their life with computers as easy as possible. Vista, although generating me lots of work (thank you M$) has ruined the (computing) lives of countless people around here because its just too different.

I dont hate M$, not at all, if there was an alternative to windows that was good enough to losen their monopoly then it would, simple fact is that M$ develop the best OS and Office packages available. I think they have been very bold with Vista, it moves computing towards a brighter future and opens up plenty of new options for the user.

But that isnt the whole story, currently the most popular standard service my business provides is downgrading new PC's from Vista to XP. If no XP licence is owned this can cost in excess of £150, thats a lot for someone to spend on top of a brand new PC, and all because microsoft didnt have the foresight to have a switchable interface built into vista that afforded the familiarity of XP to those with neither the wish nor the ability to adapt to the newer system.

Progress is good, but anyone here who knows a non-tech savvy older relative will agree, changing the function of operation in such a way is crazy. Most people freak out if they lose an icon. The most common answer to "where do you keep most of your files?" is: "In Word". Real people have real problems with Vista, fact.

LOL yeah mate, Doom and Quake are.

It'll get better once the Supervidel is released. Although a 68060 is never going to have the all out power too do anything like a modern PC can do.

But the demo crews will no doubt amaze us:D

I dont expect my Ataris to do things that a modern PC can do like 3D Rendering etc etc, but apart from that, the PC is no quicker than the Ataris are for general use such as office work, EMailing, Browsing the internet and such, pretty much what over 90% of the computer world use their PCs for... My Ataris can do that stuff just as good as the PCs can.

Sure, things like WebCams are very much in their infancy, USB hardware is poorly supported, and so on, but then, lets face it, most stuff on the Ataris are done by some sweaty fat guy in his shed for the love of it rather than some multi billion dollar industry.

The whole feel of using the Atari when you have a proper OS ( MiNT / Magic and maybe even Geneva ) and desktop ( Jinnee / Ease / Thing ) is very much a better experience for me that using Windows.

I find the Atari is very much like Linux in a lot of ways. infinitely adjustable and not stuck with one GUI.

Sorry to hijack thread but Falcons are great, still have mine tucked away under my bed :)

Used to love playing about with Apex.

Whip it out then...

... And the Atari...

Apex!!! - Ah, thats a great Prog.

The more the merrier! Maybe we should ask for a retro discussion forum :D

Agreed. For many its only nostalgia, but for some, its a serious alternative to a PC and even a Mac.

Well as an update; i have it up and running and in all honesty I really like the new features.

As for the argument that its too different for "old lady " i would totally disagree; as too me it seems like a very obvious step. Its the same as XP with a few things we all thought XP needed (better network, folder structure...) and a few things that most people wont find annoying but we do (exclusive DX10 support, odd driver issues on the more exotic hardware...)

Other than that its a great OS and everything I'm using is working a treat; my biggest gripe is not with M$ but with Creative and its driver (mainly software; anyone want the remote working?!?) support.

But yes as i said the actual operating system is not at fault here; and yes UAS is annoying but hey turn it off if you really hate it...

Hey, you are butting in to our ATARI Thread LOL

Seriously though, I also like some of the features... I dislike others.
Each has their ups and downs with the thing.

No, I do think its too different... Some poor old soul ( not only the elderly as I find the elderly a lot more capable than many others actually ) takes years and years to get to grips with how Windows works, and then they move on up to Vista, and there is simply far to big a jump for them to hack.

95/NT/98/ME were all the same... Small changed from one to another.
XP and I suppose to a small degree 2K was a few differences and those tiny differences caught a lot of people out, but the differences were absolutely insignificant to you or I, but to the average joe, they found the small changes a little awkward.

Now, Vista comes along and its not just a new version of Windows, but its a completely new OS.

Its a big chnge that has scared many off.

Kind of explains why Dell stepped back from it and refused to move to it and they still fully support XP as well as Vista.

Just like many millions say about Linux, MacOS, hell, even Atari and Amiga.
If you like it and it works for you then its job done.

I myself am still finding gripes with mine.

Clean install and can I get half the stuff to run? can I buggery, but upgrade from XP to Vista and the stuff that wotn go at all, often plays just fine?
O&O Defrag 8.5 for example runs fine, Partition Magic 8, again, works fine, but only on the AMD and only if I have upgraded from XP with them installed... There is a huge number of apps and the only one that has failed to run for me, is Daemon tools.
But a clean install, they wont even dare to try to work... Go figure?

Pff!

Tell me about it.

I just downloaded a load of drivers etc for the AMD upstairs. I am going to do a fresh install in the next couple of days ( maybe tonight? ) and I am working on setting it up for once and for all and sticking to Vista regardless of what happens on it... So, the drives etc are all the latest for all my hardware, including the Creative Vista ones.

Do these drivers you speak of have anything more than the control panel?
I want a nice GUI like in XP; why has that been so hard for Creative to do?

The only conclusion I can come to is they are still trying to work out EAX with Vista and when they do some real drivers they will bundle the software as well.

Well, theres nice for you.

I just been upstairs and reinstalled Vista, to get a proper ide aon how the creative stuff was all about , and I posted a fairly large post on the Vista PC only find that its seems vista would not let me post????

EH?

Anyway, I lost it and booted the PC, woke the kids up etc etc

Ok, what else happened? ( This is going to have to be a massively cut down edition of the post I should have sent you 10 minutes ago )

I got a BSOD on it trying to install the video drivers ( But after a restart it seemed fine - both cards are visible although I have not found a way to enable SLI so the drivers seemed to have gone in, but the control panel does not )

The craetive card seems to be workign well enough, the only thing I have had *** chance to try out on the drive bay is the headphones... Yes, the main speakers do mute when I plug in the phones and they unmute when I take them out... Good news there.

I did have a number of crashes come up when I tried to swap between 2.1 and 5.1 Audio, but even though this did occur, i dotn see myself needing that particular function all that often, and the crash was a simple bad DirectSound driver dialog box that came up with an error number thats not to hand this minute ( Its saved as a screenshot on the vista PC ) and I got around it by simply exiting WinAmp and restarting WinAmp and it was able to play again, and it was able to swap over too, so I could go from 2 to 5.1 and 5.1 to 2 just fine, but it meant that I had to restart winamp and click on the recovery dialog box but other than that it was fine.

Anyway, I had tried to sent a load of stuff that I had done, but for some strange reason, the Vista PC was not letting me do it, so I gave up in the end and I have come downstairs to calm down.

Dude that sounds like PC hell; but hey one day we will be called pioners...

Another thing for me; do i need to install the AMD dual core optimizer?

Not sure?

I will be honest with you... I never bothered with the AMD DC Optimizer on XP until I came across a silly issue....

Playing back MidiFiles with WinAmp, the system was really really poor at it... I asked on OCUK where someone asked if I had the DC drivers in? - I did not, so I tried them and they cured it. Funny thing really.

I got to be honest here, but I write my music on my Atari computers, and while much of it is XG Based, a lot of it is not, so my more recent music wont play back on a PC as MidiFiles anymore, and so I have not needed Midi Capability and therefore, I have not actually bothered to install the AMD DC optimizer either?

For me, the only reason was MidiFile playbck in WinAmp... Everyhting else seemed just fine?

Im not saying its a waste of time, but if I was able to get by just fine without it and it was only MidiFiles that required it, then Im not really all that bothered at all...

Does Vista need it? I dont know although now you mention it, Ill have a look.

Im off to re-install the video drivers now, see if it will go through without crashing again, and I will try to post somethign in here and see what vista says about it again.

Got a number of gripes about Vista and some of the Apps... Such as Nero, and a few other that I like for my XP boxes that either dont work, or are too drastically different for the Vista versions.
