Bioshock Demo and ROOTKIT!!!

I care about things being installed on my computer without my knowledge, Securom installs itself like spyware and acts like it and thus I will treat it like spyware and avoid known sources like the plague, no matter how good the game is I dont want something that takes more effort than simply hitting the uninstall / deleting folders to get rid of sitting around being a possible future vulnerability.

There is a giant discussion about this, it does nothing but annoy legitimate buyers and it doesnt affect pirates in the least. The stink is bigger this time because of the activation stuff that Securom are trying out now, the developers didnt put it in the description or in-fact tell anyone about it before too long ago which is why people are upset.

Kinda related, they dont seem to learn.

Sony USB thumb drives come with rootkit
by Cyril Kowaliski — 2:59 PM on August 27, 2007

As a result of its decision to include a rootkit-based copy protection system in some of its CDs, Sony had to pay $1.5 million in civil penalties and refund users whose PCs were damaged by the software last year. However, it seems that wasn't enough to make the company turn its back on rootkits.

The folks at F-Secure have discovered that software bundled with Sony's MicroVault USB thumb drives installs a driver intended to conceal files in the host system's Windows directory. Said directory reportedly becomes invisible to the Windows API and some anti-virus software, which could potentially allow malware to exploit it in order to avoid detection.

According to F-Secure, Sony relies on the cloaking functionality to conceal data used by the thumb drives' fingerprint authentication system. (Thanks to Slashdot for the tip

Anyone seen an illegal version of Bioshock out, with a working crack? Don't think so!

Looks like the way they have secured the game has worked for them, so far anyway!

What would you rather have, something that be copied and downloaded for free by thousands or make sure the games creatures get the money they deserve?
Its not harming you so get over it really, its a way of stopping them getting ripped off in the real world.

if you want to come up with a secure way of selling a game and making sure it can't be pirated, then go for it, but until then, get over it :/

Very close, it can be beaten if you have a serial, the mini image is avail, all you need is latest daemon tools.

Not that I advise you to not pay legitly for game ;)

BTW, Sales were poor with Splinter Cell CT as of Starforce, it took 1 year to crack.

Nobody in the know wanted Starforce near their PC, I had DVD writer issues with its driver installed.

Bioshock has not been cracked fully at all, I'd expand but I fear a suspension.

The demo exe is protected to prevent crackers using it for the full game, which has been done in the past by some release groups.

Im sure with the sheer popularity of this game that every crack author out there is trying there hardest to get the 1st working crack on the scene, copy protection does nothing in the long run, its the short term that matters most, im sure even the most hardened warez whore will loose patience and just go out and buy it eventualy, if they really wanted to play the game.
Ive no problem with companys using copy protection, but using copy protection that could potentionaly open your computer to exploits or interfer with other software is a different matter.

Whats the problem with the rootkit - does it do something to your computer? =\

yes its going to take over your computer and then the world

But the full version does it as well - so I dont really see the problem?

WTF. I really don't see what the big deal is here.. Is it going to swallow your Vista Install or somthing , Christ, so much fuss over nothing

No offence intended, but your all idiots if you cannot see the issues raised by root kit and stealth-ware technologies, technical, ethical and practical.

what the developers need to understand is that copy protection only stops piracy for a short while. And while most copy protect isnt realy a problem for legit buyers, copy protection with spyware/rootkits in it often makes people unwilling to buy a game, and just get a illegal download of it instead that has the rubish ripped out of it.

Exact same thing happened with UFO:Aftershock which came with starforce. Due to that, it got awfull sales, not by piracy, but by people unwilling to get a game with starforce. Shortly after release, it was cracked and possible to illegaly download without starforce, at which point the number of people who got the game shot up.

So copy protection that forces stuff like this onto a pc, is a double edged sword, the copy protection lasts longer then other forms of copy protection, thus making ppl want to by the game instead of wait for a crack, BUT, it also makes legit people not want to by the game, and either just 1) wait for a crack of the game without copy protection, or 2) not get the game at all.

No i'm just not paranoid, I really dont think anyone with any sense could care less about some copy protection

I care about it! I installed a demo of a game that after playing I didn't really like. Now because of that, I uninstalled the demo and it's left spyware/rootkit or whatever you want to call it embedded in my PC even though I have no intention of buying the full game.

It's not spyware or rootkit. It is simply software to prevent the illegal use of the game. It won't do anything bad to your PC. Either uninstall it (which you CAN do) or ignore it like everyone else :)

I think the much more pressing issue with BioShock was the utterly stupid activation system. Two installs ever for the lose :/

At least they're working on it, I guess.
