a new kind of terrorism

Wow haven't heard about this, been away since thursday ..

uk - hasn't sent anything, but russia has sent loads. Do we not have these hellicopters and planes. or is gordon brown to stupid.

Hmm, sounds like the lack of aid from the British government is because Greece didn't help with the floods.

A big  from me to the government if that is the case.

i guess the UK isnt equiped for large scale firefighting , thats why.

but the media is reporting utter BS , i came across a german newspaper stating there are 300.000 homeless....when its only 3000.

We are goinf to rebuild them , probably make these places better than they were before. War didnt broke us down , neither these fires.

Oh and a firestarter was caught by locals trying to set a fire , he was found with 24 propane cans , motorcycle batteries, mobile phones and some remote devices like car alarms etc. He was beaten hard , now is in hospital and he is foreign , police dont reveal his identity. in total more than 50 people are in custody

oh and as for the russian help , has been very generous , i expect some Sukhois now to be bought by the airforce (russia is trying really hard to win our hearts)

I agree with Iraklis, the UK firefighting force doesn't have the necessary experience or equipment necessary to cope with such fires. If you look at who has contributed help, and what kind of help, it is nations that have lots of fire problems and experience themselves and have the necessary equipment - does the UK even have firefighting helicopters or planes?

What bugs me is the speed at which the fires spread, covering up to 5 miles in an hour. Even modest preparation (2 months at over 40 degrees heat should have given ample warning) would have slowed that  Loathe to agree with the opposition though, they have an equally abysmal record for such disasters.

As for the rebuilding - houses can be rebuilt, economies can be rebuilt - but what about the people, the ancient forests, the natual beauty? These take decades if not centuries...the floods of the winter might wash all the topsoil off...we're dangerously close to becoming a desert :( I don't think any of the politicians have enough foresight to take measures to prevent this from happening...I hope they do...

Btw, do you know of any links for donating money for help? Short of hopping on a plane myself, I can't think of much else as to what I could do :(

Dont fear too much :)

Fire actually brings a lot of new growth, It pops open seed pods and you will end up with more trees and plants growing then before in a lot of cases.

Just give it awhile:)

The only way it will become a desert is if you continously burn the same land over and over again with giving the new trees to grow back and grow seeds and stuff:)

exactly nature is wonderful, many trees and plants actually need these forest fires to grow..

As others have noted, I too had only heard scant reports and didn't know just how widespread the problems were.

Who maintains the forests in Greece? Do you have an equivelant to our Forestry Commision?

Most(?) UK Forests have fire breaks; do you guys have similar?

*n

wow the germans came with these

and do a great job , actually they saved a village (live on telly). i LOL'ed when the mayor said they will built a luxurious resort home for every german pilot aboard these :D

Have you ever seen the burned forests in the Coronean Spit in Lithuania?
NOTHING has grown for the last years... just some faded patches of random grass... NOTHING else...

Some places are helped by fires... some others are more protected than we think (bark trees in southern France "laugh at fire")....
anyway... we'll just have to wait and see how this part of nature will react...

disgust mate , the forests where i live have been burned by

1908 turkish , so that guerillas cant hide , forest grew again
1944 german+bulgarians, >> >> >>, forest grew again
2000 possibly fire starters, trees are again on the rise

and i can show you pictures where pine trees are growing again at the same spot. Pine is a remarkable tree , it grows anywhere with little help too.

Thx re.

In name only, but theres no Forest Registry.

Nope  I saw a German video today where they started adding these, cutting trees down etc. to create a barrier. Today. Tuesday. 4 days AFTER it all started, 3 months AFTER the first 40 degree heatwave. I really do despair sometimes

What's the newsreader person saying?

They were describing what was being seen on the vid, i.e. two people, in the middle of nowhere, suspiciously not running away from the fire, but just "checking it out".
Sure that's not just a controlled fire to take fuel away from an approaching bigger one?

Yeah, its a forrested hill in Athens, there was no fire anywhere near it. This hill has been targeted at least twice or thrice.
Just wondering. Shocking - why hasn't that person been pwned by an apache gunship?
I would like to know also! Still only 1500 soldiers deployed to these places...out of an army of 300,000! WTF is all I can say....and as for those arsonists, sure they have to shoulder the blame, but so does the government (this one and all their predecessors) for not doing anything to prevent such incidents. It was only a case of time before our luck ran out. Now we got the bill.

Awesome - and so embarrassing that we have to rely on them to cover our mess. Saw a report on these, apparently they flew the choppers over, at the same time a military transport plane carried 2 crews to Greece, who arrived yesterday (choppers arrived this morning) - why can't we be so organised? The choppers arrived, and the fresh crew got onboard. THAT is organisation.

Nai re, but even pine needs soil to grow. The problem with the peloponisso is that the rain and the slopes will result in the soil getting washed away. No soil = no growth. Re-forestation has to start in September or else there won't be any soil left after this winter. Also, it takes decades to grow to the same size again.

if you ever drive in the Kavala ring road you will see pine tress growing on ROCKS. i ll take a picture next time i drive there

dude the country has the means to cope with plans that never predicted such events. 6000 fires and 77 dead altogether in 2 and a half months is more than we can take. surely the US are better and well organized than we are by a huge margin , yet New Orleans was wiped off and it took them several days to reach the city. As for the number of soldiers patrolling , the army is on high alert because the administration believes this is a terrorist attack. The turkish are proven they have started fires in the islans of Samos and Rhodes, what if they tell you the turkish paramilitary did this too?

Its not about the emergency plans so much, its more about planning and foreseeing. I know we have one of the largest firefighting air force in Europe, with some of the best trained and most experienced firefighters. That's a fact, some of the Germans helping out at the moment were in Greece on an annual training course. I'm not talking about that.

What I'm talking about is, measures in the forests - firefighting equipment distributed strategically, strategic fire breaks, measures such as the ones in Olympia, in other words, general preparedness that would have made it much easier. By "controlling" the forest you can reduce the threat of fire.

Then we had the heat waves. When there's a heatwave, why do the forests not get wetted? Wet wood = slow burn. These kind of preparations I am talking about, had these been done we could have coped with ourselves, I am sure.

Turkish attack or not, saving the lives and the forests is more important right now. We're not in the 20th century anymore, if it was the Turks then we won't go to war (even though they would deserve it), but they would get owned bigtime at EC/UN level. Sanctions, reparations, etc.

I wonder how our other greek forum member is doing..Pyro. Wonder if hes in Greece or somewhere else.

Its pretty sad to see whats happening over in Greece...i hope they catch these muppets that are starting the fires and punish them.
