sk3lph's brand new Media/Cinema room

Thanks again for the comments, really appreciate some encouragement and it's gratifying that it looks like I'm doing this right.

Bit more progress, the joiner wasn't here much on Friday and wasn't here yesterday but he attacked the job with gusto today.

The coffer is pretty much built although some side panels are still removable so the electrician has still got access to put the wiring in for the lighting. The bottom lip has got a groove cut in the top edge for the colour changing LED strip light to be installed and some dimmable LED downlights will be equally spaced out on the underside.

The joiner is almost finished and I'm having a meeting with the electrician on Thursday morning to discuss the work thats remaining which he will be starting next week.

Another step closer to the finish line with this.

Looks like this is going to turn out epic!

I am waiting for a projector to arrive today and will be turning a spare bedroom into a 'cinema' room, however as it is only a temporary solution (2 - 4 years depending on when we decide on baby no.2) unfortunately won't be able to do anywhere near what you are going to achieve.

Keep up the good work/project management, coming together very well!

Thanks I'm hoping so :)

Well there is the thing, you make your choices in life.

If my wife and I had decided to have kids then there is absolutely no way we would have been able to do this. Even if I could financially it's doubtful I'd have had the time to watch many films anyway. Both my brothers have families with kids and nearly all of their time is taken up with them.

Good luck with your cinema room, hope it goes well ;)

Some more progress to show you.

The downlights are in and looking good, although one needs to get exchanged as it's faulty.

This picture shows the power and cabling for the AV rack which will be hidden under the floor.

This shows the sockets which will be used to power the front seats although I'm going to have the side ones moved a bit futher apart.

The colour changing strip light will be put into the coffer and underneath the step once it's in stock at the supplier. Next in the queue after that is the ceiling slot diffusers to finish the air con install.

More pics soon.

Have you spent much time demoing other speakers at all? £2k per sub opens up a lot of options!

Good point, although the installer I'm using works a lot with the speaker manufacturer and has managed to get me a big discount on those subs.

I have spent a bit of time listening to the exact same speakers in a demo room that is slightly smaller than my room and am very happy with the sound that they make. The reviews on those speakers are also very favorable, the trouble is it's difficult to get a demo of lots of different 'in wall' speaker configurations and even then room acoustics give different results anyway.

The installer I'm using is very keen to make sure I'm fully happy with the final result and the speaker manufacturer is also personally involved with my project so I'm pretty confident I'm going to end up with a stunning system.

Looks great mate. If you were going with movies mainly I would highly recommend MK speakers, I believe they do an in-wall range and they tend to be the speakers movie editors use in their test rooms etc but they are very much suited to movies (although I am sure music is perfectly fine for most).

I ended up going for KEF's myself but have 7.1 and not in wall so not too subtle at all with 5 foot floorstanders lol :p

Not sure if subs have already been purchased (and not sure how much of a discount you got) but if not already paid for and ordered check out BK subs, UK built to order, their Monolith+ are HIGHLY recommended and compete with extremely high end for a 3rd of the cost. Although I do also understand if working with a particular person and the brands they support it can be difficult to venture elsewhere but in the purchase of all my epuipment I only regret not getting a BK sub (I got a REL, more expensive and later heard a model lower than the Monolith and was gutted :p :().

When investing its always worth researching yourself as their are so many options and value can vary greatly. Check out https://www.avforums.com/forums/ for more info.

Am sure whatever you choose you will enjoy it immensely :)

Thanks for your posts of encouragement, it's always much appreciated.

@Richeh, thanks for your comments, all the AV kit has been purchased and is ready to be installed so no changes of mind can happen now.

This coming week the colour changing LED strip lighting will go in which will probably be worth some more pics. Aircon install completion will be happening the week after.

Wishing my life away at the moment.

Another little step forward this week.

The electrics were finished off which required the joiner to come back and modify the lip of the step which didn't have sufficient space for the LED strip light. The LED lighting in the coffer lip has been installed but the wrong driver was supplied so the electrician will be back on Monday to finish that off and get it working.

So the remote for the downlights works so they are now dimable together with the LED strip in the step as the pictures show.

Next week there will be a bit more activity, as I said electrician on Monday, Air Con Install completion on Tuesday and the Home Cinema installer will be coming round towards the end of the week to cut the holes for the four ceiling speakers and measure the window up for the black out blind.

I'm also getting some loft boards this weekend so I can safely move around in the loft space for measuring up for the star ceiling lighting.

Another update soon,

That looks great!

Don't suppose you would mind sharing a kit list at some point particular things like LED strips. No idea where to start! Also interested how much the coving cost (or if not perhaps how many hours it took you joiner?).

Jealous also!!

Thanks for the kind words folks, I'm very pleased with how this is progressing, looking forward to seeing what the coffer looks like lit up.

Hi Ste,

If you are doing something like this yourself I'd have a look at the thread I originally posted some time ago now, which is linked to in the first post of this thread. There was lots of good advice imparted particularly a post from Lucid where he advised to hire good people which is advice I heeded in this project and it's made the process very smooth as they know what they are doing and crack on with the job. Yes it'll cost more but the finished article will have that professional look which may not be there if you do it yourself.

With regard to your questions, the coffer was built out of MDF screwed onto a wooden frame, so the material cost is not that much. It took the joiner about 3 to 4 days to build it and I was quoted £2k but that was also to build the rear platform and also the stud wall at the front, so you could be looking at less than half that for just the coffer.

The LED strip lights are from Deltech.

The LED downlights are from Brite source

Good luck with your project.
