New Games

This has been a generation where most publishers have shied away from risk, attempting to reuse old franchises on existing (formerly successful) formulas. As a result, many "big" games have been little more than itterative rehashes of 360 titles. And to add to that, some huge franchises have pretty much skipped this generation altogether (GTA and TES being the most notable).

But I wouldn't say there aren't any good new games. The indie scene has provided some absolute corkers. SteamDB catalogues the top rated games on Steam. The list is pretty interesting for the low number of big franchises:

And even where ratings have been more mixed, indie developers have brought new ideas to the table. I'm just getting in to Squad, which is quite a departure from recent arcadey FPS games. And a new release caught my eye today; Freeman: Guerilla Warfare, which seems to be best described as Mount & Blade meets FPS.

I'm hopeful that change is coming to the big publishers though. Games like AC:O, GoW, SWJ:FO and CoD:MW suggest that attitudes to risk and innovation are changing. Maybe publishers are finally hearing the message that people aren't satisfied by simply being given a shinier version of a game they were playing a decade ago.

Right. I'm trying to distinguish if games are actually bad, or if I remember them being better.

I just don't want to fall into that trap thinking where you think things of the past are better than they are now.

For example.. old school music vs new music; you are probably aware of the comments made against new generations not appreciating older music etc.

Game development used to be a more specialised area, real fans would get into the industry, fewer games published, more original, more quality where the focus was on story and gameplay over graphics due to technical limitations of hardware.

Current times, anyone can do it/learn it, lots of people churning out similar content, saturated markets, all about great graphics and profitability.

However, doesn't stop there being good games now even if they are based on older ideas. Indie games can be great.

I kind of agree with @String in that taking a good break from gaming, or only having limited time to game really improves what you play and your enjoyability of the games.

Agree, there seems to be lack of innovation in the game market at least with the triple AAA houses churning out turn key releases that they believe will safely make profit.

Occasionally though there's a few gems but these seem to appear from the Indie developers.
