anyone upgraded 5800x3d to the 9800x3d?

I'm considering this upgrade and am struggling to justify it at the moment. I'd be looking at spending over £1000 for a minor upgrade.

I play WoW, Ffxiv and mainly AAA games all of which run great so it may be a GPU upgrade for me next.

wait till the 5000 GPU come out and buy a new GPU.

I don't know what GPUs people have, but if you have something similar to me I think we are good with the CPU and GPU untill the next gen consoles come out to be honest.

Assuming they are out in the next two years.

the 5800x3d is starting to show it age a little bit now in some game's but at 4k like yourself, your probably good for a long time unless you was to grab a 5090.
at 1080/1440 again depending on the game there could be a need to upgrade the CPU, but a 4080s is fine

It depends heavily on the games you play. Saying it doesn't matter at 4k just isn't true. It matters less in a broad sense, but in CPU limited scenarios you will see a big difference.

I've trotted this out before, but I went from 40-50fps in busy areas of Cyberpunk to 80-90fps in those same areas going from 5700x to a 9800X3D. In the sparser areas I only gained about 5fps. This is at 3440x1440 on a 3080.

Does GPU matter more? 100% yes, unless you're playing Stardew Valley :)

this just debunked your own statement...

also we are talking about a 5800x3d not a 5700x. if you had a 5800x3d and a 3080 you money would have been better spent on a 4080 / 7900xtx over a cpu upgrade
also Cyberpunk is like i said there will always be a any outline game, like Alan Wake. some games dont want 3D cache they just want core horsepower

I haven't though. I was arguing against the idea that CPU doesn't matter at 4k, which is false.

There is the odd game here and there that can benefit from a faster CPU (Starfield, Hogwarts Legacy) but imo for the vast majority of games they are GPU bound and a 5(8,7)00x3d will be fast enough to last the next year or two untill the new console launch.

If course if one is going to buy a 5000 series GPU then yea I would upgrade. But up to the 4000 series the 5000 x3d chips are fine.

I think I'll hang in for 5000 series benchmarks for the time being. I'm in no rush to upgrade as there isn't anything I play that really warrants it at the moment.

I'm hoping to pick up a 5080 and will monitor my GPU usage while paired with a 5800X3D. As long as I'm getting 100+FPS I'll stick with it.

I know certain games will be limited even at 1440p UW (Stalker 2 for example, although even the mighty 9800X3D only gets around 100fps in that) but as my refresh rate is only 175 I don't think I'll see too much applicable bottlenecking in what I currently play.

The choice beyond that is either a upgrade to AM5 or get a Quest 3 for some VR (played on my mates Index again last night and while my legs are burning today it was a blast).

So I've got my 9800x3d rig setup and for me i'm happy!

In VR there is a noticeable uplift in performance where I was getting slow down to 70 fps on a congested track beginning of a race in iRacing, ACC etc I'm now rarely dropping below the golden 90 fps so if I mess with some settings I can get a pegged 90 fps Happy days!

The system as a whole seems a lot snappier compared to the 5800x3d but that may be due to the better boot SSD too (WD SN850X)

Triple 1440p gaming there is a little uplift too i'll have to mess with it a bit more and report back

I am actually considering this myself but when I look at these benchmarks the difference is about 2% at 4k.
At 4K any top is end CPU will do, and most mid tear CPU's will also do.
what you need to take into consideration is your GPU and or the real world upgrade option, right now you have a 4080 a good middle of the table GPU for 4K. so let say you was going to upgrade would you ever drop 2K on a 5090 or would 5080/5070ti be more your price bracket(they would be mine)

in this case anything from AMD 7600 and up would give almost the same gaming experience
you could even go down to a 12600 / 5700x and again get a very good gaming experience that would be within 7% of the very top dog.

so your 5800x3d will see you good for some time to come. when you drop down to 1440 / 1080 then a CPU upgrade would be on the cards

Interested to know if anyone has gone from a 5800x (Non-3D) to a 9800x3D?

Looking at upgrading my main rig asap - in need a graphics card!

TBF depening on res you need to do GPU first, infact saying that you need to do GPU first

dont buy a 9800x3d if you have a 1080ti... do GPU first

Ok so some games you get a decent bump in frames in VR and Triple 1440p like iRacing but ACC there is literally no difference but that could be due to a newer build since i benched the 5800x3d
