What film did you watch last night?

The Shout (1978) 4/10

Always on the lookout for a good ghost or spooky film, I stumbled upon this British film starring John Hurt. I'm not one to watch trailers and it looked promising!

Well, what a strange film. I'm still none the wiser, has some positives!

There is one scene, the British coastline appears forboding and unpleasant, reminding me of Get Carter (1971), which featured shots of the northeastern coast where coal **** was dumped into the North Sea.

The sounds along with an unnerving central scene are really good, but honestly, while it held my attention, I would not rush to watch again.

Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) - 7/10

Visually stunning throughout, the majestic and magnificent world is fully brought to life and full of colour, culture and visual effects, but the story could have been better.

The plot is long with multiple threads and repeats a lot from the previous films and whilst the new tribe were good, they were a little cliché and should have had a more prominent role in the film.

Scenes and characters jump around a fair bit, character motivations flip-flop on a whim and the ending felt a bit of a cop-out, but overall, I still really enjoyed it.

Primitive War (2025)

Jurassic Park meets Platoon in a Dog Soldiers type affair. Considering the budget it's very impressive.

But the dialogue, characters and even the music is so clichéd it comes across as almost parody.

The runtime is far too long for a B movie, this should've been done and dusted in 80-90 minutes. There are, what feels like, massive lulls throughout that feel more like time filler rather than character development.

There are certain scenes that are potentially epilepsy inducing with muzzle flash or lightning effects and I found them very annoying.

I also got some video game vibes with some of the camera work and a couple of Left 4 Dead type holding off the horde scenes.

Dinosaurs are impressive, putting the more recent Jurassic Parks to shame.

Overall, it's not great but considering the budget it has it's moments and the film makers deserve credit.

Avatar: Way of the Water 8.5/10

Rewatching before the sequel tomorrow. Third viewing and I still really really enjoyed it. I prefer it to the 1st, only just, but I think the inclusion of the kids (mostly non annoying) really adds to the family film element, whereas the 1st is more Action-ey.

Blue Thunder (1983)

Apart from the naked lady doing yoga and the helicopter stunt work, there's not a lot else to keep you entertained. It's very much a film of it's time and hasn't aged particularly well.

I've got a vague memory of maybe the TV show, certainly the title, but I might be confusing it with Air Wolf. I don't even know if we got Blue Thunder in the UK?

There certainly was: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Thunder_(TV_series)

In the same style:
* Blue Thunder
* Airwolf
* Street Hawk
* Knightrider

To a lesser extent:
* A team
* Manimal

This was one of the first HD films I watched and thought it was brilliant. I remember it having a proto Terminator 2 feel to it.

The Thursday Murder Club (2025) - 6/10

A cozy and undemanding murder mystery which never quite reaches greatness.

The star-studded cast, humorous characters and idyllic setting make it easy to watch, but it lacks the drama and magic of the source material as the mystery just kind of unravels at its own pace.

It was enjoyable enough, but could have done with being slightly shorter.
