What film did you watch last night?

The Running Man - 6/10

Decent action, but could have lost 20 mins as over did the "message". Some fun nods to the original film.

Closer to the book than the Arnie version.

That Christmas (2024) - 7/10

An overly idyllic and romanticized Christmas story with modern ideas, themes and morals.

The multiple plots are unconventional enough to be interesting yet still traditional at heart, although they can make the film feel a bit disjointed overall.

Cheery and enjoyable with colourful animation and plenty of silly humour, the dramatic finale felt unnecessary.

last night the 24th December i watch die hard in 4k and few nights ago i watch violent night in 4k

Tron Ares..

Oh boy. What a complete mess. I don't know how they could make such a terrible film. I was genuinely bored at some points.
The sound track that I have listened to 10x didn't save it at all, which many had billed as it's high point.
Leto was "****" at best. The rest of the cast was 1 dimensional and the VFX
And cool fighting was eye rolling after 15 seconds.

Style 5 substance 3 overall 3/10
Wish I hadn't bothered level of enjoyment.

Watched a few this week...

John Wick 4 - 7/10

I was pleasantly surprised by how engaging this was. The best in the series for me. I found the previous two frustrating as it seemed like they were following the trilogy formula of intermediate film setting up a finale that didn't feel like a finale.

The Order - 5/10

Started off well but fizzled out. Good tone and soundtrack. Nicholas Hoult is a great actor, would like to see him in more serious roles. Also Jude Law seems to find his groove as an old guy.

Mission Impossible - The Final Reckoning - 4/10

Total snoozefest. I have no problem with slow burner films but this was poor. Too many redundant side characters and exposition. The flashbacks of previous films was lazy. There was no real jeopardy. They should have learned the lesson of Die Hard 4 that "cyber" threats aren't very interesting in big budget movies.

The Running Man (2025) 3 / 10.

Complete garbage versus the original. Pointless characters and set-pieces and devoid of any comedic charm.

Angel's Egg (1985, Mamoru Oshii).

Absolutlely beautiful animation. I knew it was familiar in style, and then I spied Yoshitaka Amano's name in the credits, who illustrated some of the most beautiful Magic The Gathering cards out there, some 35 years later!

Bleak, poignant, desolate. Basically a story about
faith vs. doubt
. A little dry and glacially paced but somehow dreamy (or nightmarish?) and visually spectacular enough to keep me hooked.

I loved this for a lot of the same reasons I love the
Dark Souls/Elden Ring games
.
