What film did you watch last night?

2000 meters to Andriivka

A film that has been highly acclaimed.
Filmed in 2023 it follows a small group of Ukrainian soldiers trying to, as per title, retake a Ukrainian village 2000 metres away, through a small corridor of non mined land. Counting down the metres at various points.

It's filmed like a story, mainly using the soldiers helmet Go pro footage & the cameraman following them, but interspersed with footage from drones & their command post as it happens.
Think of Warfare, but a live version, with a lot more happening. The lads involved are young, bright Europeans.
It's not entertaining, as that would be sick. It is riveting, heart wrenching, compelling viewing.
When the squad leader films himself in the morning saying virtually the same quote as in Fury, best job in the world & then gets killed, really hits home
I had to watch it in 2 parts, as it got to me at the 1st viewing & I had to take a break.
I can remember watching Saving Private Ryan at the cinema and the feeling I had on watching it & the landing scene. This was that same feeling.

Saying it's the best thing I've watched in 2025, seems wrong, but it is.

Just watch it / 10, but get yourself prepared.

It's a Wonderful Life 7/10

The Running Man (2025) 6/10 - haven't seen the original but this falls off at the end

Very Bad Things 5/10 - expected better based on the reviews

The Woman in Black (1989) 9/10

Mark Gatiss’ Ghost Story for Christmas aired on the Beeb, Christmas Eve, and while it was good, it wasn’t as spooky as the original Ghost Stories aired in the seventies.

So, for Christmas Eve, we went with the original film (not the Daniel Radcliffe version) on Blu-ray. I’d only ever seen the grainy YouTube copy before, so watching it in HD for a first time - still holds up well and an excellent story.

Re-Animator - 8/10

I’d never watched this before, but heard great things. It looked glorious in 4K and the practical effects are just so cool / kitsch too! Cast were clearly having fun with it amidst all the blood and gore! Not quite at Evil Dead levels of enjoyment for me, but still a good watch for any horror fans.

Watched the new Running Man too, I'd give it a 6/10, started out well but it definitely dropped off towards the end, plus way too much exposition throughout especially as most people would have seen the original.

Tonight I watched the original, which I've seen many many times and it is so much better, it holds up well even though it's almost 40 years old! A lot can be said about doing stunts and photography for real. Easily a 9/10.

Hellraiser (2022).

Not my first viewing of this, but appreciated it much more the second time. Have always been a big Hellraiser fan and this is a great reboot imo - really hope they do more. Fleshed out some of the lore without diluting it.

That takes me back to my misspent youth and watching the dodgy VHS copies that were passed around of movies such as Re-Animator, The Evil Dead, Braindead, The Thing, American Werewolf in London etc.

I also really wanted to be that decapitated head.

If you’ve not seen it watch From Beyond.

We had a film day.

Tron (1982)

This hasn't aged well at all. It's mostly rubbish from the dialogue, acting and the very flimsy story. This is the Avatar of 1982, getting so hyped about making a film with a fancy new technology then forgetting to make an enjoyable film in the process. Even as a kid in 80's watching clips of this on Disney Time on TV didn't hold my interest.

3/10

Catch Me if You Can (2002)

My wife picked this one, again. We've seen this quite a few times and while it's still very watchable for the umpteenth time, it's never going to be as good as that first watch. I don't think it's one of those films you can up the enjoyment the more time you watch it.

7/10

BlackBerry (2023)

Never owned one or even had one in my hand. Nor did I have any knowledge of the company's story going in. Turned out to be a decent film, whether or not it's particularly accurate doesn't really make any difference to you're enjoyment.

6/10

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015)

Now here's a film I've seen many times and don't mind rewatching. The opening sequence is still one of my favourite movie scenes of all time and although the film ends a bit quietly in comparison to the rest of the film. It does set you nicely to watch Fallout.

8/10

Bernard and the Genie. Absolute classic, forgot to watch it before xmas. Guess most won't have heard of it, but it's a solid 10.

Alien Romulus. 8/10

I had almost given up on the Alien franchise after how bad the 90's films were and the very poor prequals.

Whilst it doesn't tread any new ground and is basically a remake of Alien it does everything well and the best outside the first two.

Yea it was I significant improvement on the previous few abominations.

Reign of Fire (2002)

Never seen it. I thought the first half was decent, it got a bit silly once the American's turned up. Particularly towards the end as well, 3 of them seemingly managed to achieve more than the entire worlds effort before.

5/10

Sin city (2005)

This one I have seen once, around when it was released. I'd forgotten just quite how fit Jessica Alba was in it. Otherwise I thought it was pretty mediocre at the time and that hasn't changed.

I appreciate some may like the artistic abstract character of the movie but it wasn't for me.

Avatar - Fire and Ash - 7/10

If you've liked the previous films you'll like this as it's just more of the same and I enjoy just being in that "world" as the story itself is totally run of the mill.

Saw it in 3D HFR at an X-Plus and it was spectacular, it just gets better with every instalment and is what creates the whole atmosphere of that world, I wouldn't (initially) watch them any other way but in 3D.
