I use the DGX for my pc with the ATH M50 headphones. The yamaha AVR is temporary hooked up with HDMI to my PC with B&W stereo speakers, I just plugged my headphones into the AVR until I move the yamaha to my living room then i'm back to the DGX.

Same issue here, never done an RMA before. How is an RMA tested? If I send my R9 290 in and they can't get it to "black screen" which is so random do I end up getting my faulty card back?

If you don't use a microphone I would recommend the Audio Technica ATH M50 for closed Headphones, They sound the most true for a sealed headphone. I'm not sure about open. You could try demo pairs in a sound store.

If you can push the extra £24 you could get the Audio Technica ATH M50. The difference that £24 could make is just worth it. Try to Demo them in a store I promise you.
