Has anyone done some benchmark tests in Win 7 on a DM1-4xxx, then downloaded and installed Win 8 today, then re-run the benchmark tests for comparison? I'm currently with a very poor internet connection for the next 4 weeks so can't try it out myself yet. I've heard that Win 8 makes better use...

The HP support assistant doesn't seem to like F15 BIOS and tries to take you back to the F01 (or was it F02) BIOS! Not sure what's going on, but I've told my HP support assistant to ignore the retrograde BIOS update.

It really does sound like you've got a faulty unit that needs to go back for repair/replacement/refund. I use mine on my lap all the time and have none of the issues you descibe.

I similarly didn't think the 4 to 8 GB RAM upgrade was making that much difference, until I tried recovering some data from a HDD rescued from a failed desktop (3.5 inch HDD put in a USB caddy and linked to the DM1). The AMD system monitor showed the full 8GB in use for the 12 hours that the...

Mine gets warm when playing games (Assassins' Creed and HAWX are my current poison), but it never gets to what I'd call hot (my old Lenovo laptop used to get far hotter when playing games). If you're using the machine on your lap, you do have to be careful not to block the vent intake on the...

I know we generally don't like to pollute our vanilla Win 7 64 bit installs with the HP Bloatware, but I did find the HP Support Assistant to be worth while. It automatically downloads the correct drivers for the 64 bit OS, even if your machine retailed with the 32 bit version (as mine did)...

Just to report back my experience with the 4GB to 8GB RAM upgrade on my 4027sa variant (this was the only reason for going through the pain of switching to 64 bit Win 7 when I bought it). Well I got the 8GB from the well known online memory experts for £31.05 inc delivery (I found a 5% discount...

The webos is in a partition on the HDD. However, the last time I swapped HDDs using the Win 7 transfer stuff (my old Lenovo laptop), it copied the partition with the lenovo system restore stuff in. So hpefully Win 7 would do the same with the HP webos partition when transferring the system to a...

That's what I thought too (from reading the HP spec sheets) until I downloaded the service manual; http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03084091.pdf (see page 49). None of the UK models have WWAN (ie internal 3G card) and none have a 640 GB HDD; so that just leaves variants with 7200 rpm...

The standard HDD in the DM1 is not bad anyway (I believe they're all 7200 rpm rather than 5400 rpm - mine's certainly 7200). A friend who has a well spec'd Alienware M11x (same size screen as DM1 but otherwise far superior hardware) and has tried both the momentus hybrid and SSD drives (clearly...

I don't know about Tiberian Wars, but I've had relatively high demand first person shooters like Crysis and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 working quite well on mine (resolution reduced to 1024 x 768).

Added to my last post, I've also found that the memory that came with the machine is 1.5 volt. crucial.com are listing their 2 x 4 GB 1.35 volt boards as compatible, which may offer a slight power saving improvement if you upgrade the memory. [Please note: you can only use more than 4 GB...

4027sa has 320 GB HDD and 4020sa has 500 GB HDD; that's the only difference (confirmed when I looked in the official HP service manual). ***** then definitely go for the 4020sa model. Coincidentally, I've found that my 4027sa has a 7200 rpm HDD (as does the 4020 judging by the service...

I assume you mean the 4020 (500 GB HDD) and 4027 (320 GB HDD) ******** The batteries are the same as the machines are identical apart from the HDD. The ****** is clearly lying like a cheap watch when it describes one (4027) as having an 8.5 hour battery life and the other (4020) as 6 hours...

If you have a look at Electroshadow's post on 19 November (page 4) and an earlier post on page 2, there are some details of a 3D benchmark test after upgrading to 8GB RAM (something you can only do with Win 7 64 Bit - 32 Bit can only cope with 4GB).

I've had Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (released 2009) and Crysis (2007) running on my 4027sa. If you look back through this thread, other people have mentioned some other games that they've got running on it. For what it costs etc, it's a surprisingly capable machine; just don't expect miracles!

To add to monospot's post; I believe it's a combination of the Beats Audio drivers and the HP On Screen Display software. The later is what brings up the on screen graphics when you adjust volume, screen brightness etc (some people find these graphics annoying and uninstall HP On Screen Display...
