    Cheap DSLR, £150 max.

Should be able to pick up a Nikon D80 for about £100 and then a Nikon 50mm f1.8 prime to go with it for £50. The D80 is a tidy camera and exposes all the manual controls you need as you start to play around more whilst the 50mm prime is tack sharp and ridiculously good value. The D80 has the...

    *** Tado Mini Review ***

I've had a Tado for about 18mths - have been really pleased with it. The presence detection on mine & mrs phones works really well (we don't have a 'set' working pattern so regular timers aren't ideal). Can't honestly tell if it's 'paid for itself in a year' as it claims but it's so...

Heads up - Hitachi 18v drill

Can highly recommend that Bosch drill / driver - that's a great price for it too. You can punt the L-BOXX on eBay for £15 or so too if not needed.

How to fit a new outside light

You'll find virtually all outside lights have a similar setup to that one; wall bracket with 'chocolate block' type wiring connector. Just flip off the right lighting circuit at the fuse box, disconnect the current bracket and 3 x wires and replace. Screwfix have a good range. If you buy a...

    Anyone use Airmail?

I tried AirMail for a while, it was pretty but I found it was a massive resource hog and slightly unstable. It may have improved since then. Outlook 2016 is decent - the only thing stopping me from switching to it is lack of iCal support (I use a shared calendar with the mrs)

    Treesize Pro OSX Equivilant

I used to use Treesize Pro on Windows boxes for figuring out where my storage was being taken up. Haven't managed to find anything that is as in depth and easy to use on the Mac - any suggestions?

    Apple TV 4

Had a play with one in store the other day, thought text entry was pretty clunky (for search etc) and there's currently no Siri integration with Plex (which is all I'd really use it for). Will wait for the rest of the big UK TV channels to release apps for it I think before taking the plunge.

    CCTV for Home recomendations

Highly recommend these Hikvision units. Day & night picture quality is excellent and if you pick them up straight from China like here they're really good value. I paid about £66 And have them recording to a Synology box. They're PoE too, so budget £15 for a cheap injector or get a switch...

    Post your custom router/firewall setups

Have been running pfSense on a HP Thin Client (1ghz VIA / upgraded 2GB RAM & 32GB DOM) for 3years or so - v.low power, silent and no moving parts - it's been rock solid. It has a single 1gb NIC so I use tagged VLANs on the inferface for WAN, LAN, & Guest network (I found out recently that the...

    HP Microserver+XPEnology

No, unfortunately Plex isn't able to use a video card to help it transcode so no benefit.

    HP Microserver+XPEnology

But when I first installed 10.4 there was no vender file present and so the serial number was blank which means not all the iOS apps work?

    HP Microserver+XPEnology

Have just stuck 10.5 on a usb stick and copied across the vender & edited menu_alpha.lst file to the new stick - rebooted and all has come up fine :-)

    HP Microserver+XPEnology

Hi all, I've recently flipped over from Trantor's dsm5 beta to Gnoboot's 10.4 alpha. I downloaded 10.5 last night as it adds HD HomeRun driver - but am unsure exact steps to upgrade - is it just a case of squirting the latest image onto thumbdrive and rebooting the MicroServer? Also...
