Hi

Been tweaking my setup (Q6600/PK5/3870X2/VISTA64/4GB DDR2) and I noticed whilst playing COD4 frame rates can drop quite low .

COD4
Everything Up Full Detail
AA Off
1280x1024
Corposes : Medium

FPS vary from 80's and drop down to 30's depending on whats going on but to me this is just not good enough considering the hardware driving this ....

is this down to the ATI drivers and the 3870x2 min FPS issue or do you think something else is going on ? Anyone else seeing this ?

tks

I've noticed my fps does seem to dive for no real reason sometimes, like when I've started a new level my fps is sometimes really low around 25-30 and then it will suddenly jump back up to normal levels. I think its just a driver issue to be honest.

There is one area in cod4 where the fps will momentarily drop, in the ghillie suit level when the other sniper is opening the door to the church with all the anti air missilies inside it the fps does dip for a few seconds but recovers as soon as im inside.

Note that the core clock has dropped to 2d speeds on the upper left, its currently a bug ati are investigating with the gpu's going to idle mode for no real reason, same thing affects crysis on vista dx9 path.

Besides that one glitch though cod4 is fine for me at 1920x1200 4xfsaa insane corpse amounts etc.

q6600 @ 3.6
Asus maximus formula
vista 64

yeah but there seems to be a wierd bug with the drivers
it seems to kick in when the gpu's arent being hammered from what people are posting here

Not even that, sometimes they go to idle for no reason. I ran rivatuner with crysis on the dx9 path in vista 64, looked towards the high fps area and the low fps area everal times and this is what rivatuner shows

Just seems that theyre going to idle\2d mode in certain situations.

COD4 seems to randomly perform badly on some PCs :( and really well on others with no rhyme or reason that I can see... on my PC in the sig with the 7950GX2 I get really good framerates when standing still (100-250) but the moment I move it drops to 25-38 - stand still again and it immediatly goes back to 100+ not much fun for playing online... so I tried the game on my then 2nd PC (E6600, Gigabyte N650i, 8500GT SLI) and it ran flawlessly with 100fps minimum - so I threw in an 8800GT on the 2nd PC and it runs ~250+ fps.

Can't say I'm too impressed with the X2 - one of my friends bought one and it wasn't playing video correctly (after 1-5 minutes the video window just goes all one color and stays one color) and would crash in 3D Marks 06 randomly so he RMA'd it and the replacement does exactly the same thing - similar in COD4 it gets really good framerate for 1-5 minutes then drops to 20-30fps until you restart.

Card being underpowered or is it possible he got the same card sent back? Only fps issue i have with cod 4 is that one area pictured above and for less than 10 seconds. Had no problems with video playback or anything like that.

Couldn't comment on if he got the same card sent back or not - PSU is 800watt and was powering a 6800GT SLI fine before. Possible theres old stuff left over from nVidia drivers dunno - everything looked fine from a quick glance. Googling showed other people with the same kinda issues tho.

I've got the same issue in crysis, in game, look around quickly and the frames drop to nearly single figures and then rise again to normal in the space of a coupla seconds. I believe its a driver issue. Does it in XP as well but nowhere near as bad as vista for me anyway.

Whats the ? for?

On my 7950GX2 the framerate is really good when standing still but the moment I move the framerate plummets and when playing MP even if I'm standing still if another player moves it drops quite a bit but the moment everythings still again it jumps up high - not sure whats up as it doesn't happen on my other PC which I'm now setting up to play COD4 on :S

Yup I get that same issue in Crysis, infact there are certain spots where I can stand and be getting like 30fps, take one step forward and it'll jump upto 60+...

Take a step back and it is down to 30fps, even though the scene is exactly the same... (bar one step).

If you monitor it in RivaTuner you can see the card drops to like 58% load (at 30fps) and then goes upto 100% at 60+...

Tis very strange...

Well because in any 3D game, if you're standing still then there is a lot less to render.

I'm not talking about different performance on different parts of the map - I mean quite literally my framerate will be say 200 if I press the forward key however slight it'll drop to 60 then if I keep moving to ~38-40 then if I start sprinting it'll drop to 25... the very moment I stop still it'll jump back to say 200 again. (It also happens if I spectate someone else online so its not linked to me pressing the forward key directly)

It doesn't happen with my other PC - even when I had 2x 8500GT in SLI in there it would be at 100fps when sprinting with the same settings - but it would only hit 116 or so fps when standing still - so something is obviously broken.
