FPS on COD4 3870X2

Other thing i've noticed with Crysis is even though the FPS counter is showing like 50-60fps+ the actual image i'm seeing doesn't look/feel like that kind of framerate, it feels far lower like frames are missing...

I've always had that problem with crysis - its mouse lag I think - feels like 20fps even when you have 70. Try moving quickly around ~90 degrees and stop moving the mouse and you will probably see the view carries on moving for 500ms or so after your last input playing catch up.

That is very wierd.

My 3870 has never seen less than 40fps (minimum with a E4300 @ 2.67Ghz in a 4x slot with settings on full.

Although that takes into account, since installing the Creative Fatal1ty fps, the fps has dropped by about 10 on average :( (Maybe you have sound issue?)

Not quite sure what your point is... but I mean its not caused by say another pieces of software on the machine that used my forward key as a hotkey and pressing it caused the software to do something that caused the framerate slowdown.

i get decent (very playable) fps with maxed settings at 1680x1050, but when i had the fps counter on i noticed it can dip down abit in some areas, but not extremely low. could possibly be the drivers if it used to work fine.

I'm really loving this game on the 8800 GTS 512MB. At the risk of getting all fanboi about this, if you like this game and crysis, and have a ATi card, then get an 8800 series.

The issues with the 7950GX2 are strange, maybe it's time to 'bay that card and snap up a 8800 GT.

I would point out that 1280*1024 is a very low res for the X2, you really need to up the resolution or you'll be CPU bottlenecked (due to crossfire overhead processing).

I would think that overclocking your CPU will really help your min frame rates because of this. Still sounds like there is a problem though TBH.

ALSO> Can you please put your spec of your system in your signature (including any overclocking) as it helps diagnose problems for you and you'll get a better answer.

Crysis is running flawlessly for me now, 1680x1050 Very high config and I rarely see below 40FPS. The only issues I've seen are the random FPS drops in CoD4, but as Gerard has just shown it is a driver bug so I'm not worried. I only get it in SP anyway and once you've finished cod4 its not the type of game you go back to and play again.

shouldn;t powerplay only kick in when doing non 3d acceleration?

It kicks in when the gpu power isnt needed. For example, as everyone probably know, gears of war has a serious stuttering problem. However, if using an ati card with powerplay, when the game stutters, gpu load goes down and powerplay kicks in. This makes matters worse.

Similarly in crysis, when the game stutters a bit powerplay kicks in making matters a lot worse.

However, as mentioned, using a modified bios or simply using a rivatuner profile with fixed clocks resolves the problem.

Tried older/newer drivers for your GX2?

BTW, sorry, but that comment just tickled me is all...

ah heh

tried 169.01, 169.04, 169.21, 169.28 and 2 lots of the 170 series beta drivers all with the same issue and somewhere along the lines I lost even more performance in COD4 :( but strangely gained 30% higher framerate in ETQW.

I have an 8800GT in my other PC which runs the game flawlessly - but atm its on my bench with the keyboard/mouse ontop of the monitor :S will have to shuffle things around to use it for gaming.

I just noticed on the 1.6 patch notes for COD4 that theres an issue with 7 series cards in SLI with the game - tho the symptoms they describe are different to mine (overall 40% slowdown rather than sudden drops).

Hi Guys

Wow lots of interesting answers. So is the consensus that this is still driver issues ? I would be very dissapointed if this was bad design with the 3870x2 as I dont want to fork out for a replacement card for a while .

I noticed that playing COD4 with AAx2 , makes a big performance impact and I thought the 3870x2 would be able to handle this no worries . I am playing 1280x1024 with everything at full and corpses set to medium. FPS can drop to 30fs.

Hi

Been tweaking my setup (Q6600/PK5/3870X2/VISTA64/4GB DDR2) and I noticed whilst playing COD4 frame rates can drop quite low .

COD4
Everything Up Full Detail
AA Off
1280x1024
Corposes : Medium

FPS vary from 80's and drop down to 30's depending on whats going on but to me this is just not good enough considering the hardware driving this ....

is this down to the ATI drivers and the 3870x2 min FPS issue or do you think something else is going on ? Anyone else seeing this ?

tks
M

Have you got the setting sync every frame switched on, i think its called something like that coz i had similar trouble and turned that off and everything else on max @ 1920 x 1200 and it runs great now

What speed is your CPU msaunders as at 1280x1024 that is CPU bound territory and I could only see 3.6Ghz - 4Ghz being able to release the power of the card and that might not even be enough.

Hi

No I havent got V-Sync on . Dual Cards is also off.

My CPU speed is 3.2GHZ (360x9)

Still trying to OC my chip to 3.6 but its not stable .

vCore set to 1.5 (in BIOS version 0704)

I am not convinced of this. The FPS drops are being caused by something else, not CPU. If it was CPU bound , then surely you would get a consistant FPS rate and not huge variances . The hardware driving this game should be well capabale, its only DX9 too after all ....

run a 3dmark on both clocks and you will see if it is the case or not
