More storage needed.. SSD time?

All I know is that ssd with the rest of my specs respectfully gives me an enthusiast rig. I plan on buying 2 more 60gb vertex's and one more gtx 285 and then I'll consider myself done. Wait I also want this:

....and water cooling. So wait, is anyone ever really DONE building their rigs or are all just a work in progress:D

Actually, page files are recommended by Microsoft to be placed on the SSD - read this, plenty of useful info on SSDs and win7!

Yeah I've read that article and it's a good link with lots of good points, but it is standard MS 'Best Practice' stuff which is fine on an 'ideal' system but those are rarely used in real life. I should have been clearer with my original post where I was trying to suggest to the OP that if a single 30Gb drive was to be considered for OS & Apps then moving the pagefile would be worth considering as in that case the saving of several Gb would most likely be of more importance to him than following MS's recommendations.

Nicely put Ninja Please! I know mine is always a work in progress, as I'm always looking to improve the performance either by hardware upgrades or OS/Firmware tweaks - normally the time when I sit back and say that I'm truly happy is when I've run out of either money or time to read about the latest and greatest developments!

It's so cheap I'm sceptical! Slow read and write speeds compared to other SSDs, but it's the random writes and therefore the controller/cache info that's important, if you can't find reviews. If the IOPs can keep up with other, faster SSDs the bandwidth isn't so important, you'll still get the snappiness.. in fact if it's a good one I'd be tempted by it!

Yeah, I'm really tempted to try this one now, obviously over normal 7200rpm SATA hard drives I would notice a massive difference, even up to 90MB/sec I would imagine! But obviously I don't wanna be spending dead money, was all set to order a Samsung today then saw them out of stock here, then ran out of space on c:\ at home, so it NEEDS to be done! :D

Ever since I started earning half decent money, i'm finding it harder to spend it! Make me do it! :)

Get a 1tb drive for storage, and 2 SSDs; One for xp one for 7.

Just let me go rip an arm off, being made of money! ;)

I am tempted by that in the long run, if I got a SSD right now just for 7 testing and XP if 7 doesn't work out, what would you recommend? Idealy not wanting to spend an ungodly amount (Sorry Spie! :p) Would 32 be enough? Or best to go fo a 64 for now? I don't play many PC games anymore, but have a lot of apps I want to install and don't wanna overfill the drive!

Thanks!:)

From what you say above I would suggest a 64Gb drive, as there'd be nothing worse than getting it, realising just how damn fast they are (cause despite all the reading in the world, until you've tried one you just can't really believe it) - and then finding you can't get all your Apps on - go for the largest single drive you can reasonably afford. And then, enjoy!:)

Ah fair enough, in that case the ones I would really be looking at would be the Corsair 128GB or the OCZ Solid 60GB, any call on which you would go for out of those 2? I know capacity wise the Corsair is just over double, but if its much lower performance then I dont wanna make "that" mistake! :)

I'd say the Corsair out of those two - the OCZ Solid I'm fairly sure uses the JMicron controller which was... not very good - caused bad stuttering. Miniyazz linked to an article in post#27 of this thread which shows the Corsair to use the Samsung controller which doesn't have those issues, so that's why my pick would be the Corsair.

I've been telling people that SSDs are the next big thing for a while now well in advance, but even though they are better value than ever now and becoming better, I still can't personally justify buying into the tech at current prices and functionality. Drive speed degradation and overly hyped - but not that fast - read/write speeds have put me off buying one until they get more reliable/faster/proven and mainly CHEAPER per gb. I know it's more about random access times being lightning fast, but having to arse about with formatting etc to keep it optimum...no thanks.

Hmm, as you may know I have several of these and altho the initial setup a couple of months ago required some thorough searching through forums etc to get the best overall package and info, once setup and running I have completely left them alone, and they do just fine thankyou. And with the OCZ Vertex series the newest firmware seems to be the stable final edition that was being sought after in those early days after release.

Speed decreases are not noticeable in day to day operation, only in the synthetic benchmarks that manufacturers throw around and which are not a reflection of everyday real world usage, and although the Vertex has the TRIM tool for use if needed I havent used it yet and my rig still feels as fast as it was when first installed.

'Over-hyped speeds' you say... They are damn fast, much much faster than a mechanical HDD. FACT not hype.

So, other than your argument about waiting for them to become better value for money, your saying that you cant justify them at their current level of functionality just doesn't hold water I'm afraid - they are pricey, but they are also the single best upgrade you can make to a system's overall performance.

Faceplantsi- would you go for 2 vertex 30gb's in raid or a Samsung pb22-j 128gb (or 2, but of course quite prohibitive cost!)?

As far as I can tell the Samsung is better value for money (and I think £4gb for the vertex is still too much) in the long run and slightly faster but not sure which is the better/more reliable drive?

Do the samsung's have any problems or are they much the same as the vertex?

afaik the Samsung's are fine - they don't suffer from stuttering or any other of the issues that dogged early SSD's. They are far better value for money than a lot of the other makes atm and even if not quite as fast as some others they will still be a great improvement over mechanical HDD's.

I would say get the Samsung purely because of it's greater capacity over the Vertex, as only having 60Gb for OS & Apps would be a bit too restrictive imo.

Went straight in with 2 x 30Gb in RAID0, and then added a third after about a week and did notice a speed increase in general usage, apart from the additional space of course!
