Tempted by some cheap GTX460 SLI action? Might want to check this out first before laying down your

I'm using 4 points either side for reference, currently its more of a playback so that the effect can be explored afterwards, some of the timing stuff is a bit off your points are very useful.

I could just pull the data off the green line on the graph to smooth out the big stutters as this is a smoothed average.

Apparently all multi GPU micro stutter
I cant see it, very few people can.

Saying it is better to buy a 5850 rather then 460 SLI because of micro stutter was rather childish though and was blatantly done for a reaction...

Ironically I think the same about your post.

Enough people notice micro-stutter for it to be quite a large issue.
You will often hear people now say they won't touch multi GPU setups because of this phenomenon...
So if your one of these people who are perceptive enough to notice micro-stutter then yes you would be better off with a faster single GPU.

I have gtx 480 SLI here and all my games run silky smooth, no stuttering here.

I did notice micro stutter with my 280 tri sli, don't really notice it now.

Check this vid out, how come the 5970 has microstutter at low FPS but the the 480 SLI setup has not, guess it's not necessarily true that both camps suffer microstutter at the same level.

I've got to say that sadly I notice it at almost all framerates, it really nags me but I tried 2 460 GTX and whilst not as bad as my 7950GX2 of old it was still there.

I agree with others though, I was telling my wife about it and she thought I was some kind of lunatic!!! :)

People who buy a pair of midrange cards over a single highend faster card have fell for marketing as dual card setups are still all over the place. The fastest single GPU is always the best route for gaming.

Most times when people buy 2x mid-range cards over a faster one its scenarios where the 2x mid-range cards are combined still significantly cheaper than one high end GPU while giving comparable or better performance.

Multi GPU performance is based on to many factors. Looking at just the numbers, performance ranges from slower than a single card to pritty good.

Unfortunately you never know what performance your going to get, or what problems your going to find.

Updated the proggie with some slight changes/corrections based on duff-man's info.

http://aten-hosted.com/files/msviz-v1rc5.zip

I must stress tho this isn't a scientific look at microstutter like duff-man's program but an attempt to visualise the benchmark frametimes so comparisions can be made from different systems. The number on the bottom right is an arbitary index that attempts to give an idea of how smooth the playback was, numbers of around 5 and lower should be normal for single GPU systems - it should be comparable within a small margin of error over similiar length benchmarks of the same application from different systems the higher the number the worse it is, the total "score" for the last complete run will show on the furthest right.

EDIT: Updated again to fix some minor backbuffer issues and add the ability to capture current screen and a graph of the framerates.

"as you can clearly see now that the ATI cards are smooth compared to nvidia, despite running at a lower framerate. the nvidia cards stutter like crazy and negates the high frame rate readings these cards are able to display."

Obvious troll is obvious.

Infraction time.

Also the video evidence is void as I am running Multi GPU setup so the micro stutter is unbearable.

New sli user here - a pair of gtx 460s running sweet. It's shocking fast. Haven't noticed any issues yet, and I'm usually prone to stuff like that.

Hmmm dont recall all these issue about micro stutter when everyone on this forum was saying to buy crossfired 5770's when the 5 series came out?

It's all down to Nvidia bashing. They may as well call this forum ATI overclockers...
