Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

@Kefen

Yes it's worth it if you want silence :)

I use a 90W Pico cost me roughly £25, but the power brick cost another £30 I think can't exactly remember, I maybe should have gone a little higher wattage but the brick is 120W. Runs 4 2tb Adaptec Scsi 1 80GB SSD and 1 TB Drive.

All runs OK with this wattage although only niggle you need a lot of extra molex cables to connect the 1 connection you have to get all drives powered up.

You get these items from Ebay and mini itx if you Google.
It is also worth changing the back fan to a scythe controlled one or other if you want near silent operation, just adjust speed to around 600rpm or it won't boot.

@steinooo

I have 3 USB pico SD and 1 290e HD Adapaters I use DVBViewer works really well great software.

If you install Xpenology though there is a free version of TV software as a Package available.

hi. thanks for reply. in the end I'll be getting Streacom ST-NANO150 for 35 quid from guy who will test the unit for review and then sell it onto me.

I also have Noctua NF-S12A ready (need to mod the connector), but tbh once I replace the PSU, I think even the stock fan will do.

He's a good man. Got cheap Noctuas off him, or Silverstone Strider Evolution Gold 750W PSU for 60 quid and such.

Reminds me of the shuttle days. although I must say this is a great addition. now if only I didn't accidentally throw away my DVD blanking plate:(.

I could really do with a LCD instead of a DVD wasting space.

Does anyone know why the price has gone up again? I was thinking of getting one of these after my recent pay day and all 3 sites I know that stock them are now listing at around £250 before cash back... :(

HP's offers change each month. I'd guess that the prices will sort themselves out once the resellers know what the situation is.

Are HP still actually building the G7 Microserver, or are they still just running down existing stock? As good as the G7 has been, I'd still like to see the back of it. Once it disappears there might be some better deals on the much nicer G8.

I heard that they were just clearing the existing stock...

However the G8 didn't review so well in SPCR (I think someone posted a link earlier in this thread somewhere)... It's a much nicer machine, sure, but it's lost some of what made the G7 so attractive (moddable, quiet, very low power)

I still like the idea of the G8 so I could have the G7 pumped full of drives doing dedicated NAS+backup stuff and the more powerful G8 for all my virtualisation needs

For what I use the G8 is a better option than the G7 but what can you do, once I get a decent deal come through I'll swap from the old to the new, Plex has meant I need more CPU grunt lol...

there on the rainforest for £155 , no cashback or theres a couple of online stores that have them for ~180 with 50 cashback

I have plex installed on my TV and on my N54L with XPEnology Cpu usage is very low.

Mines an N40, two Apple TV's in the house makes the CPU cry...
Transcoding is not its favorite pastime..

I currently run WHS on my N54L, and use drive bender.

I really want to try the Synology DSM software though. Has anyone made this switch. My only concern is whether DSM will recognise that the drives have been pooled. Or should I un pool the drives first?
