Same dilemma. I'm reluctant to start a new contract at £40ish a month for an S5/M8.

I've been looking at the Note 3s, they're quite cheap now and still a massive upgrade to the S3.
 
Got my s3 back from repair and my root access is gone :(
Anyone have a guide on how to root to 4.4.2?
All I can see online is rooting to 4.1.2 or 4.3?
Currently on 4.3 atm.

If you just want root then install Philztouch recovery via Odin and use the built in cf root then install chainfires superSU.

If you want 4.4.2 then install philztouch ignore option to room and install Temasek's aosp ROM as its the daddy of s3 ROMs at the moment. Its already rooted to ignore all options to root from philztouch. Don't forget to install a gapps package or you won't have a play store!

So I just root with any ROM, then just flash a custom ROM to get it to 4.4.2?
 
My 2yr contract is up in June but still can't decide if and what to upgrade to, might wait till the Note 4 and iPhone 6 come out before I decide. I'm with three on the one plan so will probably switch to the £12.90 sim only deal for a while.

Tbh the S3 pretty much does everything I need except for 4G however I'm fed up with the Samsung bloat and was wondering if there's a good reliable rom I could use that would just give me the standard OS like the Nexus phones?

How to flash an s3 ROM from stock firmware!

**********************************

Download the following files:-

Recovery :- Philz Touch Recovery
ROM :- Temasek CM11 Nightly Build
Google Apps :- SlimKat Gapps Package
Kernel :- Boeffla Kernel

Save All files in a folder on your EXTERNAL SDCARD not the internal memory!

Flash Custom recovery as shown here

Just dont root using the recovery always say no!

  • **IMPORTANT**
  • ALWAYS make a Nandroid back up before flashing a ROM its your only way back to a fully working state!
  • If you want to back up and restore App data use Titanium Backup * Root (must have root access to use this app)
  • Best Text Message backup app I've found is MyBackup no root is needed :)

  • Boot into recovery (volume up+home+power)
  • Wipe Data/Factory Reset
  • Wipe Cache Partition
  • Mounts and Storage and format /System and /Preload
  • Advanced and Wipe Dalvik Cache
  • Select "Install zip" and browser to your downloaded zip file.
  • Now select the Temasek XXXXXXXX.zip file you copied to your external Sdcard /storage/sdcard1
  • You will have Temasek CM11 installed
  • Install Zip SlimKat_GappsXXXXX.zip in the same way
  • You now have Google Play store and some Base Google System Apps
  • Install Zip Boeffla_KernelXXXXXXX.zip in the same manor
  • Congratulations you are almost there
  • Reboot System now

The system will need to rebuild its self so will take some time for first boot to become ready and stable enough to use and finish setting up (full OOBE restart)

Dont forget to install Boeffla Config V2 App so you can control your lovely new phones power usage. :)

Hiya mate, I'm on my s3 with a tamesek tom, having sticky notifications and errors here and there. So I'm going to refresh it with your guide :)

What is the point of the kernal? More power control?
 
Yeah better battery life and improved sound quality.

Since Temasek has had to rebase his builds its become very similar to CM11 he is slowly adding more options and fixing more bugs but as he does not have an s3 to test the ROM on its rather buggy :(
