Netgears new VDSL / ADSL Modem Router with AC wireless (D6400)

There are some VDSL modems that only support G.INP on the down stream, for trouble free G.INP you need support for upstream also. Some VDSL modems also have support for Vectoring that BT is apparently releasing this year, so it's wise to check these things before any modem purchase.

Ah yes! I recall that being mentioned before about other modems.

This uses the new BCM63168 chipset which in theory should support G.INP with those connected to huawei cabs.

This chipset is used in most newer routers witch work with G.INP fine so it's down to netgear..

Edit. Looks like G.INP is working on the router as adslmax on kitz has it working and working on DSLstats too.

I should be upgrading to FTTC with PlusNet on Tuesday, so hopefully I can report after then as to its vDSL performance.

Well, that didn't happen. I got an email on Monday night that my appointment was confirmed, not for the Tuesday as requested but, for the following Monday!
I've just got into work and seen that I have essentially been assigned off-site for the next 2 weeks, which means that my upgrade is going to be delayed for about 3 weeks now. :(

The only plus side is that I can have a good shout at the customer services today about why they didn't meet their own statement about when the appointment would be and hopefully get some compensation.

Well I managed to get the day off work in order to get my fibre upgrade done this morning.

I was tearing my hair out for a while as the D6400 would not connect to the fibre using either the automatic wizard or manually configuring the connection settings.
In the end I did a factory reset and it all magically starting working after that.

I'm also interested in how folks are getting on with the D6400 as I need to buy a new router as my 7800N's wifi is getting a bit flakey. I prefer the "non aerials" look of this router as it will need to sit on display in the living room. Shame the logo is apparently rather bright. Can this be fixed neatly with some black tape?

I got one over the weekend. Setup was simple. I connect at around 4mb faster than the Asus dsl-ac68u. Ping tines are around the same. The WiFi strength is also about the same covering a decent sized 4 bed house and still having signal in the garden. Dslstats is working fine on it also.
Only issue I seem to be seeing so far is that the VPN section of it doesn't support android or iOS just now. When streaming videos it seems to be a little juddery now and again. Playing call if duty on ps3 also saw it pausing and quickly catching up. Not sure if this is servers or an issue with the WiFi as its doing it streaming.
The VPN side of things are important to me as I travel around a lot and find it useful to just go in through my home connection. Not sure if I'll keep it yet or not.

Many tx for the feedback. Slightly concerning about video playback as for me, this is one of the main requirements as I watch 1080 tv shows/movies on my laptop via wifi.

I have no issues using Netgear WAC120 which uses the same internal Wireless AC as the Netgear D6400, will try with my laptop with a really huge video file on the D6400, I have a 28Gb file which is perfect for such.

As for VPN have you tested with Android? I know it says on the router, but I was sure it was just the information related to what OpenVPN had on their site when they designed the router, pretty sure there are stable OpenVPN clients on Google Play now https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.openvpn.openvpn&hl=en etc.

Sorry, I should have said, Watching videos on the likes of youtube and other sites like that. The videos never seem to buffer completely. It will buffer a bit then play until its catches up then buffer again. Normally this is a slow ISP issue but it has only started doing it since installing the Netgear. Same with gaming such as Call Of Duty. The game seems to freexe briefly then has a second of everything going fast then returning to normal for a minute or so then repeating.

I'm probably just jumping to conclusions or it could just be coincidence it all happened at the same time after installing the Netgear. I'll keep an eye on it anyway. I'll try the VPN shortly to see if I can get it to work. I read Netgear doesn't support a type of VPN (Either tap or tun) I can't remember which makes it incompatible with Android. Saying that, The VPN settings in the Netgear say to use OpenVPN and that is readily available for Android.

Also speed tests seem to be funny. I only seem to be giving me half my download or half my upload speed. One will test at half when the other goes full speed. Very odd.

I did some speed tests on my laptop and all was fine, some of the speedtest servers only gave me 40mbs and some gave me 75bmps, so could be the server you chose, what wireless AC card are you using and are you using the 5ghz band and have you checked which channel the router is using etc?

No issues for me with giant 28Gbs file and no issue with netflix for me over wireless.

I've just tried 8 different servers. The same issue on all tested. Either my download is halved or the upload is halved on every test.

I've just tested some videos and it seems better. I initially saw issues of what appears to be lower frame rates really is what I would describe it as.

I'm currently using the Asus PCE-AC68 card. The router is on channel 44. My connection stats state initially said 1300Mbps but it now shows 877.5Mbps

I tried to setup the VPN function but it just comes back with an error every time.

Has anyone any idea on when the next firmware release is due?

Netgear are slow with firmwares, you are lucky if you see 1 or 2 a year for their devices.

As for VPN issues are you using a static IP address? It may be best for you to set up DDNS and VPN via that. VPN on Netgear devices is normally pretty reliable so unless they changed some serious code in this device it should perform fine.

I think he was worried about not being able to do VPN on android clients I believe as OpenVPN was not supposed to work with android clients and Netgears TAP tunnel etc.

However I have found and tested a solution to this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.colucciweb.openvpn&hl=en however it costs about £5 not a lot, but it does work.

True but Billion can be even slower than Netgear, not a single new firmware since release for there BiPAC 8800AXL which is pretty much the same as the Netgear D6400, I guess just look on both forums for both products and see who complains about what.

Both are listed as G.INP and Vector compatible on kitz.co.uk.

So far am happier with D6400 than the ASUS DSL products, had no fluctuations in SNR etc like I did with the ASUS, also everything is pretty much auto setup with the Netgear, no having to tweak things like you do with the ASUS.

I'll have a sit down and play about with the VPN settings again.
The netgear unit is far more stable than the Asus on the modem side of things.
Anyone got any suggestion as to why I would only get 40/20 or 72/10 throughputs? One is always halved on the netgear trying various servers.

It might simply be something to do with the CPU inside the Netgear D6400 and it's prioritization.

Certainly beefier one in the ASUS which is maybe why never had such issues on that with speedtests, but seem to have odd such ones with the Netgear even though never any issues in apps or downloading, never have any issues on torrents either, gets up to about 8Mb/s.

Speedtests can be useless.

Also if you are doing speed tests on wireless clients you might want to turn off WMM temporarily in the QoS settings and retest. Remember to re-enable it afterwards.

Hmm possibly. Like I said, once I get back to my house in a few days time, I'll play about with the settings maybe try reset a few things.

Forgot to say to bitsnbobs, yes I believe my IP address is static.

The WiFi is actually stronger on this than the Asus believe it or not. I'm impressed.
