Official Home Gym Building Thread

After purchasing some equipment off a member here and grabbing some other bits. My gym is complete :)

Despite the vast array of cardio stuff in there, I was about to congratulate you until I saw the massive pussy-pad on the barbell... Which then explains all the cardio gear.

So much win undermined by so much fail. :( :( :(

Hi all

About to start building my gym at the end of this month. Currently specifying the flooring.

So I eventually see myself getting into Olympic lifting / dropping weights from height and therefore need to protect the concrete floor with a suitable thickness of rubber. I will of course be buying rubber bumper plates as opposed to metal.

What are people's opinions on using thick lifting platforms vs getting the whole floor space fitted with really thick rubber (total 40mm thickness)?

I was originally going to go with 10mm all over and a specific lifting platform but now think it would be better to just go with 40mm thick throughout. This is basically to make the best use of the floorspace in not having a thick platform, tripping hazard etc.

I can't see anything wrong with the above, can you?

Thank you

Mike

I think you are right Mike - a lifting platform in the end is expensive, a trip hazard and also eliminates a lot of "usable" area for doing other things in that space.

If you do look at getting into serious Oly lifting you could always have some layers of plywood cut into the rubber giving the best of both worlds (and no trip hazard)

Thanks Ronski

After talking to a guy I know who owns his own Crossfit gym, I've decided (as you also suggest above) to fit a 25mm plywood panel to the concrete floor for firm standage, surrounded by 25mm of rubber throughout the rest of the gym. This, combined with rubber bumper plates (that will drop onto the 25mm rubber floor) should be more than adequate.

Thanks

Mike

Sounds like an ideal solution mate - I would love to have a plywood lifting platform integrated into the floor of my gym....hmmmm that's got me thinking now :)

Has anyone used PowerBlock Sport 9.0 Dumbbells (1-22.5Kg), or any of there other setups?

The sport 9.0 i'm looking at is a little over £200, but is upgradable to 41kg and then 59kg in two extra stages.

http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/powerblock-sport-9-0-set-pair-1-22-5kg.html

Not sure if i'd want to go any higher than 22.5kg, as i mainly do barbell movements. But would like dumbbells to suppliment with.

Just a headsup, Hotukdeals says the CF475 power rack will be on an Amazon Lightning deal (sold by powerhouse fitness) tomorrow at about 3pm. Great bit of kit, will be interesting to see how much it's reduced by!

The CF375 was on there a couple of days ago with a £50 discount.

I doubt anyone has bought or used all 3 racks to be able to compare them tbh!

At the end of the day, as long as it gets used and it does the job, "better" doesn't really matter. I've not seen the RSR one before, but £249 inc LPD is damn cheap.

Decided to go the home gym route as well. It'll take a while as I'm building a carport first before converting the garage into a full fledged gym. Recently bought a commercial style incline bench and I find myself training chest at home and far more regularly than I did going to the gym.

All I'll need extra is a squat rack and a calf raise machine. The rest I train with free weights.

Powerhouse Fitness have extended their Black Friday sale to the rest of the weekend so the CF375 is still £199. The RSR one looks better though but that's only based on looks. I really don't know either.

Anyone here use Oly dumbbells? I've got 100kg in oly weights and a barbell, but want to start doing some upper body training, since I'm mostly just doing bench and overhead presses.

Best place to buy/price?

What is to stop you curling/extending/lat raising with weights and a barbell?
 ;)

Cheapest place is Fitness Superstore/that auction site... H less you want phat grip stuff or extra long Dumbbells...
