Official Home Gym Building Thread

Due to the height where my power rack is I can't over head press. I want to do this outside is there anything like a squat rack but smaller/more mobile that I can use outside to rest the olympic bar on?

Guys where would you trust to buy/sell second hand gym gear?

I am moving house for a new job and my new place doesnt have the room for my equipment. Got the red strength package from powerhouse fitness and some extra bits and bobs. I really dont trust ebay these days, is gumtree legit? never used it.

Also if i do manage to get a sale online, should I be asking for cash on collection or is bacs safe enough? dont want people grabbing the gear and then recalling payments lol. I am assuming that gym gear doesnt hold its value, was all bought end of nov last year for over 900, would i be barking if i tried to get 500 back?

Sold mine on gumtree, guy paid cash ofc. No problems.

Cheers will give it a shot. If i can do it before the move it will save me carting the bloody stuff there lol! :)

Still intend to buy it all again and more when i eventually buy a house and can make a proper job of it.

Hi Guys, have a question about which bar to get, i have just bought the ryno power cage and looking at getting an olympic weight set, seen a few around the bay but dont know which bar, do i go for 6 or 7 ft
my cage measures about 43"/110cm wide
im a bit space constricted so would prefer 6ft bar but would the inside be to small? if i have read correct the 6 ft and 7ft are the same inside width but the 7 have longer collars
can anyone confirm size along with use on ryno cages

thanks ali

What is the best cast iron 2" plate for the money at the moment?

York is out, as we in the UK get the shoddy "York Fitness" brand goods - opposed to our North American friends who get the real deal, Canada-made York Barbell plates which are made to a much higher spec.

I've heard mixed opinions about the Body Power plates.

Also heard good & bad about the Strength Shop ones.

I haven't really heard much about the ones from "worldofhealthandleisure" but the price is right.

I have basically just bought myself a nice Leoko barbell, but can't afford/don't need weights of such tight tolerances. I just want some well made, uniformly cast iron plates of the proper dimensions for every day strength training. I don't want wobbly, poorly cast, crap iron!

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have a space of 300cm x 380cm that I'd like to put some rubber flooring down. What do people recommend? I priced up 4 x 6ftx4ft horse stall mats (which doesn't fully fill the space but will do) but with delivery it's like £450 with the interlocking edges etc. What do you use?

They'll be laid on floor tiles. I've turned the double garage in to a home gym so everything will be done in there. The mats will sit under a power rack, treadmill and rowing machine but there will be some workout space too. These should hold the mats in place hopefully.

Are the edges straight then generally so they can be pushed together without it being massively noticeable? Could glue them together I guess for added security, not sure how effective that would be though.

I'm moving to a bigger place in the next few months which, along with work going well, means I can finally add all the stuff I wanted to my home gym.
I have a basic set up currently, 475 rack with pulley, cheap york bench, cheap york barbell and olympic db handles.
The first thing I want to get is a set of dumbbells as I can't stand messing around changing plates on the db handles between warm up sets and changing exercises.

I originally liked these

but was told by powerhouse that they discontinued them because of quality issues. I thought of buying the newer v4 version http://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/bom-b-max-prov4-rub-db-set1-5-50k.php but I'm worried these will have quality issues too.

These are the options I'm considering:

http://www.savagestrength.co.uk/jordan-urethane-dumbells.html

http://www.savagestrength.co.uk/raze-premium-rubber-db-set-2-5kg-50kg.html

http://www.savagestrength.co.uk/eleiko-vulcano-dumbbells.html

I don't have a limitless budget and I don't want to spend it all on dumbbells. I don't want to buy cheap ones that won't last either. The eleikos are probably overkill. I'm considering the bodymax ones but I know they don't have the best quality, so maybe somewhere in the middle with the jordan or raze dumbbells

Anybody have any experience with these dumbbells?

you are looking at some really nice dumbbells there with associated nice pricing.I personally have use the Raze, Elieko and Jordan ones you have listed in various commercial gyms and all are decent. Personally I would find it hard to justify to spend that much money on them.

I am sure that in a home gym setting, that the bodymax pro will be durable enough, to not have any issues. While also saving you a boat load of money.

I looked at dumbbells a while ago and ended up going for a set of powerblocks. If I did it again I would go with rubber hex dumbbells initially getting 4 or 5 pairs in the working range I wanted and a pair of "heavy" ones for single arms rows and then build from there as I needed.

Good luck and I am slightly envious you can get a whole commercial rack of dumbbells in one shot ;)

Hi all

About to start building my gym at the end of this month. Currently specifying the flooring.

So I eventually see myself getting into Olympic lifting / dropping weights from height and therefore need to protect the concrete floor with a suitable thickness of rubber. I will of course be buying rubber bumper plates as opposed to metal.

What are people's opinions on using thick lifting platforms vs getting the whole floor space fitted with really thick rubber (total 40mm thickness)?

I was originally going to go with 10mm all over and a specific lifting platform but now think it would be better to just go with 40mm thick throughout. This is basically to make the best use of the floorspace in not having a thick platform, tripping hazard etc.

I can't see anything wrong with the above, can you?

Thank you

Mike

Thank you, that helps put things in perspective. I ordered a pair of 2.5kg bodymaxes just to get a feel for them. The quality seems ok and they are much nicer to handle than adjustable olympic DBs but the knurling feels very soft and cheap. Other than that it seems like a decent product. The raze description specifically mentions aggressive knurling so I might consider those even though they are effectively twice the price the bodymaxes.

I couldn't have gotten them last year, but investing in HMOs has made it possible for me to get a house with enough space and to kit it up with some nice gym equipment.
I'm still going to get it on finance so I have the cash available for other things.
