Official Home Gym Building Thread

so cancelling my gym membership this month, arriving this week will be a cf470, bench, the 145kg 7ft oly bar kit from power house fitness, and 2 Olympic sized dumbbell bars (seemed a good idea to keep all the plates the same size rather than buying separate dumbell weights)

2 bigg as 15mm thick rubber mats from ebay (apparently the stuff that used to be under an astro turf pitch, will be epoxying them down onto some old thick chipboard.

all in all its still cost less than 18 months gym membership lol

I doubt anyone has bought or used all 3 racks to be able to compare them tbh!

At the end of the day, as long as it gets used and it does the job, "better" doesn't really matter. I've not seen the RSR one before, but £249 inc LPD is damn cheap.

Good point!:p

It's been delivered...97kgs! Will give my impressions of it once its put together after I've finished sorting the garage out.

I've done the same, cancelled my membership as of 1st of January. I'm completing on my new house on the 16th and have been given the green light by the missus to turn the garage into a home gym! :D

I've been looking at the Bodymax CF475 and PM121 bench, oly bar and weights to get me going. I'll have to have a hunt on Ebay for some mats. Likewise, it should work out about the price of 18 months gym membership!

Check our 'RSR' on ebay (link on previous page), see what you think of their power racks. I've not assembled mine yet but it is damn hefty and a lot cheaper than bodymax ones.

i would not recomend the CF328 bench, its ok but the aduster knob is ****, to get it far enough out to move the bench its completly lose and comes out( not captice just a bolt with a handle basicaly)

i can see it being replaced with a thick allen key acting as a pin.

cf470 is decent spotter arms could do with being maybe a few inches longer but otherwise no issues.

Sold my house a couple weeks ago and ended up leaving my gym matting behind, because it was wet and smelt quite bad. Couldn't be bothered to sort it out at the time, having moved my entire house over two days pretty much single handed (minus moving the larger items, where i had a bit og help)

Anyway i could do with sorting out some replacements for the new house that i move into in January.

The originals were from powerhouse fitness i think and cost me about £60 each plus whatever postage cost.

I'm not sure of the exact area of garage, but i'll likely require about 4-5 matts. Where is the best/cheapest place to look?

EBay there's a place selling 15mm thick rubbed from under an old AstroTurf pitch.

Iirc was 30 quid for 6'x4' they do bugger/custom sizes too

Hi there

Just been reading this thread and getting brain gainz from the wealth of knowledge on here.

I recently bought a new house with a decent sized garage and feel that I would benefit from a home gym as the main reason I miss any gym days is due to the 7 mile cycle and also the fact I work shifts and want to work out at night when the gym is closed.

My current work out is basically mixed body twice or 3 times a week at the moment as I was not going regularly enough or routinely to carry on doing splits. I am working in "push pull" alternatives.

I am wondering if anyone can glance over my planned purchases and provide with any input also.

I am considering the below power rack

http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk...-power-rack-lat-attachment-utility-bench.html

And then I will buy a used olympic bar and plates from eBay. Around 180kg will do me (bench is 100kg, deadlift 160 and squat is only 120 due to missing many leg days.

I have dumbells already.

My main exercises are:

Bench - flat, incline and decline
Ohp standing
Single arm row
Seated row
Shrugs
Side raises
Front raises
Triceps push down with bar and rope
Dips
Cable flys but will substitute for dumbell fly
Deadlift
Squat
Curls
Ab stuff on bench etc
Lat pull downs wide and close

I think I can do all these exercises with this kit? Am I missing anything. Any help is appreciated. I know my exercises are a bit random but I can't do a lot of arm exercises due to a bad elbow after dislocating it and fracturing in 3 places.

Thanks

Dude

The first set will be correctly sized for Olympic plates (450mm), they will stand up to Olympic lifts much better, and as a novice what is the likelihood that you will need more then 160kg for now?

Personally having got the bodypower cast iron set from fitness superstore myself last year, I now wish I had stretched just that extra for the first set you had linked.

Hi All, looking for some advice as I'm slowly setting up a home gym and as a novice gym user need help choosing a weight set. What would you choose and potential benefits or disadvantages from the two sets below. Cheers all!

Second set is cheaper and more weight, smaller plates can be used easier on a pulley system/dumbells if you intend to include them in your gym.

Depending on what exercises and how much you lift the first set might be more suitable. All plates are the same size which means setting up for a deadlift will be easier at lighter weights and they will allow you to attempt olympic lifting, not sure how well they'd stand up to being dropped at that price though and it would depend on what flooring you intend to use.

You also need to bear in mind that if you get/have oly dunmbell bars, you're not sticking the oly weights from the first set on them! I'd personally get (and did get) the second set - tri-grip weights are easy to move around, they fit on my pulley and my oly DB bars, and they're cheaper. That, and I'm not going to be dropping weights from overhead any time soon on my flooring!

However, given the chance (proper flooring, some actual muscle), I'd love some proper oly rubber plates!

I've already got some dumbbells and longer term I'll look at getting a used power block so I'm not too worried about needing to use them for that.
I'm kind of edging towards the Olympic plates to not limit options down the line. If I start to drop them then I will definitely look at getting additional matting.
Cheers for advice - will post progress pics soon

Just ordered some Powerblock Sport 9.0's stage 1 and 2 (up to 40kg per DB) for my home gym. I have Olympic DB handles and plenty of plates they just feel so awkward due to length being fixed no matter what weight is being used.

Hopefully the Powerblock's will be just what I am looking for.

Has anyone else had any dealings with Powerhouse Fitness recently? I had some stuff delivered over Christmas but it was missing the bench. Since then I've not been able to get in contact with them via phone or email!

I was considering buying some of these a couple of months ago too, so will be interested in how you find them.

I placed an order just before Christmas and they emailed me to let me know one of the items is one back order and could I phone them back, which I did and got through straight away.

Hopefully my delivery should be next week

Weird, I've tried every phone number I can find for them and they've all just been saying line busy for the last few days. I've sent two emails and one webnote and they've not got back to me on anything. They were pretty prompt at replying before Christmas when I wanted to put my order in.
