The Pascal GTX 1080 Owners Thread

Finally got time to run a few passes in Firestrike last night, and toy with a preliminary on my new MSI 1080 Armor OC.

i5 4670 @ 4.1ghz
8GB DDR3 2133
Stock voltage and power limit
+200mhz core (1997mhz boost)
+160mhz mem (10160mhz)

Total score: 14988
Graphics: 23421

My temps are ok (highest at 83c), and could stand to increase the fan speed (not sure what it's set to now, but it's virtually silent), but why is my total score lower than others I've seen? Is it my CPU? In any case, I think I can definitely push higher clocks, I think on both core and definitely on memory.

very happy with my G1 gigabyte card. I have left the fans on default and have added 110 Mhz to the base clock so it boosts at 2050mhz. temps stay under 75 degrees.

Cant seem to get any extra FPS when clocking the memory though - In fact 3d mark showed a lower score when i bumped from 50 on memory to 100

shouldn't it boost higher than that - my stock G1 gigybyte boosts to 1950mhz without any OC.

I thought the G1's out-of-the-box boost was only 1860mhz? My Armor OC's out-of-the-box boost is 1787mhz so assume offsetting in Afterburner to +200 means I've running with a boost of 1987mhz?

The quoted boost speed by the manufacturer is only a lowest default one. If the card has the power, headroom, and temps it will always boost to more.

Its a nice bonus. eg by Gigabyte FE boost is 1733mhz but it does 1868mhz. So a +200 on the core would boost it to 2068mhz or thereabouts.

Cards will/should boost to whatever they think they're capable of - my palit boosts to 1960 out of the box whereas on the box it says 1847 or something.

Yes. The CPU physics test is part of the overall score, so an i5 (especially at a reasonably modest overclock like 4.1GHz) will drag it down somewhat. Ultimately, you won't be matching the overall scores of people using hex/octa core chips under any circumstances though, so it's not worth worrying about. A Haswell i5 is still plenty for actual gaming.

Ah, thanks - what I suspected. Another good reason not to rely purely on synthetics to gauge a card's gaming prowess.

I see. Remember when the speed a man set his card to run at was the actual speed it would run? Simpler times...

I'll have to track my card's actual speed then across the tests to see where it's running then, I suppose.

just use GPU-Z.

start the inbuilt stress test in GPU-Z then look at the sensor tab and it will give you an idea of the actual boost speed.

Got my MSI 1080 Gaming X on Wednesday and am very happy with it. Full load I can't get it over 70c on stock fan profiles.

Very quiet too - tiny bit of coil-whine in very specific situations but overall a well built product.

Good side grade from 2 EVGA SC 980's (Ref) for £70 on top after selling them.

So this Gaming X 1080 is dangerous - it's made me buy a X34A now!

Out of the box it boosts to 2000 - Slight clock gets it to 2100, but sits at 2075 after 45 mins of benchmark looping at 1440p.

Memory sits at +500 with ease, but crashes at +600. Will keep it at +500 as I think thats decent enough.

Quick question guys. That logo on the backplate of the GameRock does bother me. Does anyone know if the EKWB backplates will fit the PCB of the GameRock, or are they only for FE cards?

They have a nice looking blue one that would match the fan shroud.

Edit: Helps if I read. I see now that they're only compatible with their waterblocks. The backplates don't work on their own.
