You might be right, same for my Palit one. Quite a big OC, in a case designed to be quiet and a room that's 28c+ it's only hit 68c @ 40% fan speed.

The LEDs can be controlled via the MSI Gaming app but I don't know whether you can turn off the MSI logo independently of the rest. I'd bet you can but I've yet to try the app, didn't have too much time today to give the card a proper spin.

EDIT: I don't know whether it's too visible in the picture but those red accents on the cooler light up as well;p It looks a bit gaudy to be honest;p

@TNA, in regards to the fan ramping, does yours do it all the time, even from boot without running any games?

Mines doesn't do it until gaming, then when finished it keeps doing it for a few mins until temps drop then it's back down and stays idle.

Yes mine does the same. At idle/desktop the fans are stopped. When approaching 60 they rev on and off a bit then stay on. Then when cooling down they rev a bit then stop. It is a bit of a stupid design but can be remedied quite easily by the looks of it.

As TNA pointed out though, you can get round it by just setting a custom fan curve so that 0-30% ( the "revving" bit) is cut out so it just goes straight to where they are on constantly (around 30-35%) at a given temperature.

Thanks, the ramp up doesn't really bother me, as long as it's off in general it's not a biggie, I only run a NH-D15 on silent with no case fans in a Primo and not too intrusive for a few mins.

No, it only does it when the temperature is hit about 58c until mid 60's I think. Then it does it again when trying to cool down.

I thought the same, give it time, you only just got the card

It will start to get annoying in a few days time. You will realise once you play certain games, it will be stuck in revving mode the whole time as that particular game may only push the card to say 60c.

It is a stupid and bizarre problem. Why would they design it like this? The custom fan curve fix works fine but it would be better if the fans just slowly increased from zero.

It doesn't really bother me as I got it for a great price and 2ghz+out of the box and 60 degrees running temps on air can't be sniffed at.

Not bothered. Though would be nice if they released a bios that fixes it. Even if fans cannot run slower than sub 30%, they should just release a BIOS that has a fan curve that kicks in at 33% when it reaches 50c/60c or something. That way no need for afterburner to run in the background.

For the curious, since there is no pascal bios editor yet I took a punt and asked palit if they would make a increased TDP bios, they said they will get back to me in 7 working days with it, so this will be interesting. I asked for 30 extra watts.

Kicking in is probably part of the problem. If you have a simple:

if (temp > x <= y) { fanspeed = Z }

then you'll always have an issue when the boundaries are crossed.

The fix is really easy, you just add a dampening function, especially to the fan drop stage. At the simplest you can say 'never drop fan speed until at least 10 seconds since the last change', or you can get more complex and average out temperatures or use hard and soft boundaries during your dampening period.

Curves on a graph don't address any of that - they just allow more boundary points. Anyone know of any cards that let you script fan control?

Well after buying 2 second hand 980Ti's and experiencing coil whine with both, I've sent them back and cut my losses...and I've ordered an MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X - should arrive in the next 2 days! (not from ocuk sadly, their gouging stretches loyalty beyond breaking point).

Upgrading from SLI 970s (both MSI Gaming Xs as well), so hoping for zero coil whine, low temps and quiet fans just like my 970s. Hoping I won't be disappointed!

out of interest, what values are people getting out of their 1070s in Afterburner, in terms of core and memory clocks? My 970s both ran solidly at +150 core, and +300 on memory.
