Just bought a K&N

I had one on my old Cinquecento, it was only the 899cc so not powerful, but the K&N made a difference, it pulled better in the gears, and didnt struggle as much on the hills. I kept the orignal cold air feed in place, and used the cold air feed pipe that came with the K&N too, i put it at the bottom of the bumper, so it had a lot of cold air going towards the cone.

So if I installed a K&N panel filter on my Saxo VTR would I see much difference using the standard airbox and intake?

IIRC, Mrk1@1 experimented with his Saxo VTR. He tried BMC, Viper, K&N open anda K&N panel. Out of all of these, the panel filter gave the best repsonse through all conditions.

Open filter saw his 0-60 slowed by over a second

Sure he'll mention something about it later on tbh!

meh!

In my GTI-6 I have - Green Panel Performance Filter + Drilled Lid

Sounds normal, with normal driving. Put your foot down and it sounds like a scooby :D Prolly added a few bhp due to the original paper filter being restrictive.

What does a everyone mean by a drilled lid?

RIGHT TO CLEAR THIS UP FOR YOU!

You may suffer heat soak in traffic etc but who tears it around town unless you are a loon.

Once on the move with the air flowing over the engine this will not impact it. Do you have a heat liner under the bonnet, if so remove.

I had a K&N Typhoon on my Focus ST170, and it turned heads, had it RR on a particularily muggy day and it was still up on stock 170BHP. The K&N are designed in such a way that the original snorkle on the ST was still used which sat underneath the element, so unless in traffic it had full on air getting to it.

Have fun mate i am thinking of getting another for the Cooper S as the sound is awesome and it increases the throttle response.

Yep, got the typhoon on mine, sounds good and has improved throttle responce, overall i'm happy with it, need a better cold air feed though!

You physically drill the existing airbox with small holes in a place where cold air can get in, preferably not the engine side.

i know this may sound obvious but past experience rules nothing out, you need to make sure you drill the airbox before/underneath the filter otherwise you engine sucks in unfiltered air.

That is correct, I tried it on my primarily on my saxo VTR, VTS, C2 GT due to the ability to use the same kits across the three engines, albeit with some different sized samco hosing.

Open K&N was attrocious. Sounded mint though but sucked big time.

Best results and overall drivability was with the panel filter although with all the hosing the Viper probably looked the best. I used samco from the intake to the filter and the filter to the TB.

This was the only mod I ever did to these cars. I know a viper or K&N Gen II kit on the VTS with a remap gave propper gains.

The problem is unless you tune the induction length correctly you can loose low end torque/power quite readily where the fueling isn't set up right.

Also its no good gaining power in parts of the rev range (top end) and loosing it in others on a small untuned engine as the performance will suffer.

To be fair, gone are the days where manufacturers intakes are highly restrictive. They spend a lot of money and time on the design.

You can enclose an open K&N kit with the right tools and some sheet metal which works quite well but no real better than the manufacturers spec.

Do you need to tell your insurance company if you put a different filter on?

Quite tempted to put one on the MX-5, but don't want to get raped by Admiral.

Suppose I could put a panel filter in, but then I wouldn't get the noise. :o ;)

Well is there any point in putting a filter on if you arn't going to tell the insurance as if you have a crash its a tad obvious in the engine bay. Admiral are ok with mods should be about 30 quid extra

If you want noise then fair enough, if you want power gains you will notice they are pretty pointless even on the good kits unless you do other mods.

Hmm but £30 for insurance then £30 - 40 for the filter, is a bit much just for a nice sound.

If I were to drill the airbox, apart from allowing hot air in would it give the same sound effect as an exposed filter?

Just as a temporary measure.

If you drill the airbox on the opposite side to the engine and underneath then you wont get heat soak.

Actually paper filters arn't that restrictive. Alternatively if your a real cheap skate then you can take the paper filter out and use a some of the fabric off some tights stretched over.

i installed one, and put the hose from around the back of an old tumble drier around it, and used platic cable clips to attach it to the bottom of the grill, under the headleight, the insulation from it was good, it was heatproof, and it did make a difference

:)

What car?, its the illsuion from the sound tbh unless you car has a turbo.
or was old school restrictive.

Ok, i got it through today and fitted it and tbh im not sure if i like the sound! Its a bit too loud!!! Dont notice any loss or gain in power though. Heres some pics. I may change my hose though.

I may put it to where you see the hose first as there is a huge gap there! ill need new pipe though. And it sits right on top of the cam which gets well hot.

Josh

thats gonna soak up nothing but hot air!

if you can move it somewhere nearer the front of the car it won't be so loud :p

don't forget to declare the mod to your friendly insurance company

All I can say is meh to that. Meh meh meh. Dude that is the worst place ever to put the filter. Heat soak city.

But at the end of the day you don't have any real performance to boot or to loose for that matter so meh.

Do your insurance know about your mod?

All that aside I bet it sounds sweet :P :D

I just followed the instructions which said to put it there so i followed them. :(

Its quite a bassey tone that comes from it in contrast to the original sound, sounds a bit annoying but you can make it do different tones though.

Ill move it when i get the right pipe.

P.S why dont k&n tell you about heatsoak or anything?

Josh
