GD may close for a while

I can just see Spie now, sitting back in his chair, pipe in one hand and a glass of his finest in the other scrolling through these pages and lol'ing :D

I've not seen the sense of community in any of the other sub-forums (save Motors) to warrant meets. Case Central meet 2007 anyone?

Well hes not alone but i only have a roll up and a coffee :)

It seems clear to me theres a divide from those users that want a tight serious GD and those that want a light funny every day situation GD.

Why not just split up GD into two for those members that don't like Relationship /cooking /advice threads!? that way it keeps everyone happy.

The fact that he replied sarcasticly only proves my point. It's not friendship, it's a clique. Otherwise why the insulting sarcasm?
He obviously feels that your comment was directed at him or his friends. It reads as if it was to me.

There is no clique. The only exclusive group on these forums is the mod team, and thats with good reason.

You guys meet up on Xbox live, that counts I suppose ;)

Argh, talk about deja-vu. Every time a thread regarding GD comes up we all go over the same points, cover the same ideas and spawn the same arguments..over and over. It's crazy.

Either close it (temporarily preferably), don't close it, do something about the posters that everyone in the forums and admin team seems to be referring to who are bringing the forum down, have a huge crackdown on crap for a few weeks, i don't know; i'm not admin! :) .....just do something, anything to make these threads/problems disappear. :)

This has been going on for months now and it's tiring having to read about it and post suggestions on how to fix - it all seems to fall on deaf ears. Threads have been created for the members to provide feedback and suggestions about how to improve GD but nothing ever happens.

Just to clarify; i love the place...i've never stayed a member of any forum for so long. There's a LOT of good stuff about this place...a LOT of love. It's beautiful....but SOME are spoiling it.

Also, some new additions to the banned word list would be great, including:
ovaries
nuke
spam
WTF
:/ (not a word, but please get rid!)

*breathe!*

So it's ok to insult the 'clique' referring to our friendship as **** sucking, but a sarcastic reply back isn't?

The way this thread is going, put GD out of its misery.

Why is this clique being discussed? How does it relate back the original post?

:/

Perchance it is believed that this clique is to the detriment of the forums.

Mighty, Minsta, sorry for the misattribution!

And mighty was advocating the shutdown of GD. How will that give the techies a general place to hang out?
It wouldn't, and, as I said, I wouldn't like to see this forum closed permanently, nor all the non-techies to leave (nor even most of them!).

unless the argument is to get rid of all members that aren't techies altogether? Is it?

If so, I vehemently disagree. The strength of this place is diversity. It would destroy that.
I don't know if that was what Mightynimrod was advocating, but as I pointed out it's not what I would like. It would be nice, however, if the hardware regulars were to post in GD more often, because they're the core of the community, and, as Sleepy mentioned, a lot of people who now only post in the lifestyle forums originally came for the hardware advice! Obviously there's a lot of people who only post in GD but are good members who make constructive posts, but the fact is that the majority of spam, trolling and bickering comes from GD-only posters. I hope that a temporary closure would cause precicely these kind of posters to lose interest and find some other forum to spam, but that the members who genuinely enjoy being here will come back when it's reopened.

I think if people just used the RTM function properly, GD will improve.
Very true, GD is just too big for our mod team, and a bit of judicious RTM'ing would make it easier for them. However, see below:

What it needs, in my view, is a clear understanding by all members of what is and is not allowed, and moderators to ensure that's what happens.
That's the issue: a lot of things aren't specifically prohibited by the rules. I wouldn't know whether I should RTM a spam post or not, for instance. Trolling is specifically forbidden in the sticky, but so much trolling can be thinly disguised as debate that it's hard to draw a line. In general, I take the view that if I'm not personally injured by the post I shouldn't RTM it (ie. if it's not my thread being spammed, or if it's not me personally who's getting trolled, I ignore it). A lot of people, however, choose to respond to offensive or spammy posts, telling people to edit out swearwords or accusing them of trolling and starting arguments that go on for pages. I consider that pointless and it only contributes to the spamming. In the hardware sections it's common for people to post a reply giving people a friendly hint to edit out a competitor's URL from their posts, but that's simply because they genuinely don't want you to get banned simply for being new and not knowing about the competitor rules. Posting a reply to tell someone to edit out a swearword, when you could've just RTM'ed the post, is rather pointless and smells faintly of noob-bashing.
So, could we have some firmer and more specific guidelines as to the use of the RTM button please? To start with, should spam be RTM'ed or not?

Who said you were part of the clique? That just confirms that you class yourselves as in a group, because no one mentioned your name.

And lets not turn this into an argument, if you disagree then just ignore this post.

Glad we reached this point - I was just thinking I might have to remove you from my ignore list

Meets mean that online friendships are cemented in reality and are therefore maybe a bit stronger. I've not seen the sense of community in any of the other sub-forums (save Motors) to warrant meets. Case Central meet 2007 anyone?
I'd be all about a TOSAH meet. The community there is very strong. :)
