Hi all.

Just installed Windows Vista on my new Crucial M225. Installed the motherboard drivers and rebooted. Installed the gfx card drivers from a USB memory stick and rebooted.

Now it won't boot, says 'Invalid Partition Table'.

Boot of the Windows Vista CD and it doesn't detect the installation so I can't run a repair.

Any idea's?

It sees the drive in the BIOS. I've just tried booting from my Vista DVD to re-install the OS and it says Unallocated Space.

It's looks like it wiped the partition?

I tried to re-install Vista and got this...

Windows could not format a partition on disk 0. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code: 0x80070057.

Hmm, doesn't sound good...

then use Diskpart again,

select disk 0
clean all

should put it back to a raw state or its kaput. Try again. After that, check the cable and try another sata socket.

It's finished but I'm still having the same problem.

Fail to format the selected partition. [Error: 0x80070057].

I'll try another cable and SATA socket. All the kit is brand new, I ordered it off OCUK this week, it's just been delivered...

Can you try it as a slave drive in another computer?

Also what interface controller are you trying to install it on? IDE/AHCI/RAID?

To see if it's dead might be best to see if it will install on IDE; if that works it could be a BIOS setting or driver issue in the install routine.

Hi

Sorry, I'm not able to install it in another computer. I have tried installing the drive as IDE and AHCI. Both times I have been able to install Vista. Then, for some strange reason it deletes / loses the partition.

I'm not even able to format the drive on occasions - I only managed to install Vista the second time when it started 'working' for no apparent reason.

Just spent £1400 on a new system... not happy :(

I'm just trying to install Vista on my old 320GB WD SATA HDD.

Was the 320gb WD drive in when you installed Vista?

I've had a couple of installs fail like this when I had other drives attached, but it's not happened everytime...and it's never happened twice in a row, as though it was some glitch.

You're not going to be able to do much until next Tuesday now cos of the bank hols.

If it was me, I'd get Windows installed on the WD drive, and then attach it on a second SATA port/cable and see if you can see the drive in Disk Management and format it. If that works it suggests it's potentially ok and a setting in the BIOS or drivers. If it doesn't work as a "slave" drive in Windows to your WD drive then yes, definitely RMA.
