Carmack is working on Virtual Reality Headset

Was listening to giant bombcast today and they spoke briefly about this at the end. Geoff I think it is? Said he finds it hard to interview Carmack as he is so intelligent he wants to ask a good question and not appear stupid!
Will check these out thanks :)

interviewing someone about a product should be done on a level of the people that the interview is being done for.

He shouldn't ask questions that he thinks will make him look clever or stupid, but ask questions that he feels his viewers will want asked.

On a side note, I suppose as we've had 3D shoved down our throats for two years now it's about time that VR reared it's head :)

AHarvey I think the point he was trying to make was he was kind of in awe of Carmack due to what he has achieved and continues to do.
Also from what he was saying you only need to ask one thing and Carmack will talk forever on it. He didn't even have to ask him about that headset and he spoke about it at length for a long time.
Certainly one of the most interesting characters in the game dev world with what he does outside of it.

Could be better than you think, doing away with the 90's tropes.

I listen to a lot of science podcasts, one did an hour with a group from cal tech working on the tech behind this. From the gist of the vibe, the guys using this were blown away by the reality of it, actualy feeling peril and danger falls in situations.

No doubt the cost will put me off anyway, but im stoked to see what becomes available.. you can kinda see this being a posible future thing... and for more than just gaming, aka the're will be real money pushing it..

Ohh and i played on the Jaguar VR headset:)

I'd actually like to use a proper VR headset, i'm sure the game immersion would be mind blowing with games like Amnesia. Que videos on YouTube of people getting scared ****less and falling over/dodging invisible stuff lol.

I must say if the VR unit was really good I deffo would not play Amnesia with it. Far FAR to scary. Hate to say it but imagine the Health and safety issues behind this. If you are "Virtually" implanted into a game lke Amnesia that could proper **** with your brain. If your brain percieves it as reality people could end up having heart attacks

Of course I'm no where near smart enough to figure this sorta thing out in depth. But still I think I would avoid scary games I would prob end up flinging the VR unit lol.

I'm still really interested in this though. Will deffo keep an eye on it. Because lets be honest 3D was not the next step in gaming imo.

Really amazed VR tech hasn't much progressed in 20 years. Could be the kick in the teeth it sorely needs. Higher res displays, bigger FOV, and yeah lower input latency. He's got it nailed really, Just need to 'make it so'.

Doom3 is pretty ideal to demo the tech. Jumpy scares, claustrophobic settings, high contrast shadows, low res but still looks decent, old tech means loads of fps headroom.
