Carmack is working on Virtual Reality Headset

hmmm how much is $330 again? Im seriously mulling over the developer kit but think id just be holding a really expenisve but immersive way of playing doom3. Will be getting this as soon as its launched properly anyhow for anything less than £300, VR finally done mainstream? awesome.

edit:@ gone up $5000 whilst i was reading that. Theyll end up with millions.

It's taking off on Kickstarter. $235k already. This is going to hit the millions... and it hasn't fully hit the media yet so it's going far :P. Ah, thank you gaming world.

Pighardia I think a good reason for doing it is it allows them to try something that they were unsure if there was an actual target audience for it.

I think it also gives them a good way of shipping out their devices to developers, to get it moving quick in terms of people producing things on them.

Indie devs, that is.

I like that it has already hit the goal.

Those are the developer sets though, the launch ones are meant to be higher res. and of course more expensive.

Closing in on 500k and Derek Smart is weighing in in the comments :D

Beyond my experience so ill leave it to Derek...

The thing is that 640x800 going to each eye, with a wide angle fov and this device so close to the eyes, you're going to get a lot more visual fidelity than if you were staring at a 640x800 mobile device from about 6-8" from your face. This is because of how the optic nerves work. It's too complex to explain without breaking out the equations and a lot of scientific jargon that will make mere mortals weep. But maybe John can explain it better than I can - especially since he's more of a graphics guru than most of us devs who develop graphics engines for video games. All in all, I don't think the resolution is going to make one lick of difference.

ok. Having said that cormack originally put the price of the product at around $500, with mass fabrication I would have thought itll either be cheaper than expected or have higher res. Certainly nobody who has used it to date is complaining about the res. Im really curious about the controllers though, it seems to be mostly played on joypads currently. Yeuch.
