Sorry if it's been discussed before but I did a quick search and surprised that little has been discussed about this chip. I know C2D can be had for very little now but these single core variants are expected to be priced between $30-$60, so £30-£45 hopefully? Plus with only 35W TDP and exceptional oc potential these are looking very attractive indeed, the new budget king perhaps?

There should be 3 models at launch - 420 (1.6Ghz), 430 (1.8Ghz) & 440 (2Ghz). According to the Intel roadmap they should be here this quater to replace current P4 & Celeron.

Details of these chips can be found here:

Some initial OC results that I can find:

3Ghz @ stock vcore / 3.3Ghz @ 1.4V
stock results are better than X2 4400+ in some everest benchies  He has a 460 with 2.4Ghz stock speed though:

And another one - 3.6Ghz @ 1.6V!! - 19secs SuperPI 1Mb:

Looks like it's gonna be a great clocker indeed :)

Half of me says 'urgh single core'

other half wants one, I must refrain from buying stuff I don't need however :(

Is there any definite retail date, i might get one as a step in till penryn. :)

They won't be £30-50. They are replacing Celerons at £19-35, so I reckon the same price as Semprons £22 + VAT.

Would still have dual core for 20 quid more

For the office sector they should be ok but for home use I see no point

Dunno if OCUK are planning on stocking these but they are popping up all round the web for around £23+ VAT for the 420, and about £33+ VAT for the 440.

OCUK should really get these in for those people on a very tight budget that would like a cheapo rig.

Not enough for home use?

The avg. home user bums around on myspace/facebook for a bit, listens to a few pirated tracks and checks their mail, occasionally writing a document or playing a flash game.
These are designed for that type of use.

Actually I have been thinking, would one of these be faster than an Opty 144/46 at 3GHz if the Celeron-L was at 3GHz?

I know the Opty has 1MB Cache but essentially the Celeron is just a castrated Conroe CPU so in theory should be on a close level. I think some one here who already has the board chip and RAM do some testing :)

And those types dont overclock or anything and certainly dont build their own pc's

who in their right mind is not going to get a dual core for 20 quid more when building thier own PC?

with a dualcore 2140 for 50 I dont see the point in them tbh

why spend 35-45 when a dual can be has for lttle more

Got to agree with this... it's madness to buy a single core now with the release of the E2140/2160.

Surprised no one has tried one of these yet.

Just got one, some quick first impressions, will post some screenies later. 420 (1.6) maxes out at 390 fsb (3.12 Ghz) super Pi 22 sec. Strange thing though whatever I set the voltage to on My P5B D it shows 1.26 in AI suite, not sure if the P5B fully supports these yet, according to Asus CPU support bios 1201 does but when you go to download it its not there. At 3.12 the temp in bios and AI suite is 39 and thats with stock fan. So I think there is quite a lot more potential in the chip. At 27 quid for 22 sec it has to be the best bang for the buck ever, it actually cost me 17 with google checkout, 21.50 inc postage. Will try it on a p5ne sli, see if i can get more out of it.

£21!! May get one just for fun!! Ultimate budget rig chip, the perfect stop gap until the price cut in July.

Looking forward to some games results :)

On a p5b deluxe

Beats my e2140 @ 3 gig on a p5n-e sli, never goes above 39c in asus probe, TAT doesn't work. Strange thing though the e2140 is about 4 seconds faster on the p5b than the p5ne, with same memory at same speed.

At the moment I cant adjust the voltage on the P5B with this chip, or rather when I do its still at 1.26 in bios and Asus probe, even if I set it to 1.6, hoping the next bios upgrade will fix this. Its perfectly stable at 391FSB but won't even boot at 392. It would be nice to try a 440 but hard to justify the cost since they are only 5-10 quid less than a 2140.

The thing is, some one like that would not be building a computer, becase for people on those kind of budgets, it would be cheaper to go PC world, and buy one.

Almost a month late :p

And no, as Journey has posted, you can get quite a good machine for a very low budget.

For overclocking and value nothing comes close, look here.

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=148382

Considering nearly all games are single threaded or get a small boost from multi threading its a great buy.

I have quite a number of friends who are looking for a new machine but don't have a huge budget, one of these overclocked would be a great boost for games such as css, bf, wow and eve, i could go on.
